Great tutorial on pastels. I have been looking for a "how to" on chalks for weathering and you hit the nail square on the head my man. You are absolutely correct, the modeling community is the best crowd to be hooked up with, fantastic people to learn new tips from. God bless you too pal.

Awesome tutorial mate. Im in the process of weathering an iron man statue with maybe a hint of rust and will give the chalks a go. Always great to see it done raw and live on camera :)

Sorry fo the delay on my answers for using chalk on your models. Yes you can do it after,but after the question was asked,I realized that you can do it prior to paint just like Dr. Cranky's salting method. You can use just water to hold on your finish,but any clear will work. Also you can use mat medium

Thank you I’m weathing my gunpla and I like calk better then just paint
@markjolyn948 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ken. I have found that the water usually holds it just fine. So I don't seal it. You have to be very careful using spray sealant as it can take off the chalk. So light coats at first then heavy

Hello, I’m trying to understand what you said... purple power or something like that. What is it n what does it do?? Does making it wet make it stay on better??
@markjolyn945 жыл бұрын
So Purple Power is to remove paint. I use a spray bottle with water in it to seal the chalk to the model
@markjolyn948 жыл бұрын
I have never hsd a problem Benny. Although a thought. I use it in model railroading
@markschaffer1675 жыл бұрын
You said buy cheap chalk. Where do I buy the chalk? Is it the same as the chalk that kids write on sidewalks with ?? Thanks for the help!!
@markjolyn945 жыл бұрын
I use the cheapest hard pastel chalk I can find like at yardsales or where ever. Hobby Lobby has good deals with their 40% off coupon. I don't think kids chalk will stick the same but it's worth a shot as you can wash it off which you can't do after the pastels set up for a couple of days. Always grateful to help and ask as many questions as you want

Great video!!!! I started doing this kind of think with my Pz II and Pz IV WW2 tanks, except I used graphite. The question I have is how did you seal the chalk in?
@markjolyn947 жыл бұрын
Ken O'Brien Ken I just used the water.But you can use a light coat of clear

THANKS FOR THE VIDEO, does the water spray on top of chalk keep it on? or does it come off and is not permanent? I feel I missed something
@markjolyn9410 жыл бұрын
No click you didn't miss anything lol. The water has always done a great job for me,however a lot of people use a flat or dull clear over the top. If you decide to do this use very light coats as the clear can actually destroy the chalk. Thank you for watching
@lerse6669 жыл бұрын
markjolyn94 I use hairspray. i spray a coat of it on the model, then the chalk powder. hairspray doesn't leave any sign of it on the model, but it seals the powder perfectly. and thanx for the video, it's been SO useful to me!

thanks , what do you use after your done weathering the model to keep the rust from falling off?
@BennyCFD8 жыл бұрын
+kairus1 I was thinking the weathering with water you could put some white elmers glue in with the water.
@kairus18 жыл бұрын
BennyCFD the water mixed with glue doesn't smudge the pastels?
@markjolyn947 жыл бұрын
kairus1 It can but it just depends on how you blend it

"They all know we're nuts anyway, so it doesn't make any difference." LOL, well that is certainly true!. Thanks for the video Mark, I have been using chalk my daughter's used in the driveway when they were kids. Here is my question. How do you seal your model once you have finished weathering it. Please describe how you seal for both a wet look, and a dry look. Once chalk dries, the color can be very different. Sometimes I like that difference. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Whats the difference, as far as the powder sticking to the model, between hard and soft?
@markjolyn949 жыл бұрын
Judy the difference between hard and soft pastel's is that the soft one's won't allow you to grind them of like the hard one's will. The soft one's will plug up your cheese grater or goop up your knife. They also smear when you try to wipe them on your model. I hope that helps
@DarkDioStudio9 жыл бұрын
Thank you yes it does :)

@markjolyn948 жыл бұрын
Yes Parth,you just use the chalks without the water and make sure you seal it with a flat clear

@BennyCFD8 жыл бұрын
Why don't you put some Elmers glue in your spray bottle with the water. It'll dry clear and keep most of the chalk on the model...?
@railcar1234 жыл бұрын
Do you use a sealer to seal the chalk to the model afterwards?
@markjolyn944 жыл бұрын
I never have,but you could use a flat clear like Testors dullcoat. But weather a plastic spoon or other plastic and try the flat clear on it first. I have always just done what I show on the video.

My mom got me a 69 Hurst olds model that was broke around the window so I want to make it look rolled how would I do that
@markjolyn947 жыл бұрын
Gunner Wilson It depends on how bad it rolled. You can use hot water,a blow dryer or soldering iron for dents,dings and wrinkled or bent metal. I have even seen models that actually have pieces cut out of fenders or the body to create effects. As far as using pastels on it,you would want to paint it first and add the damaged areas after. Yjou also want the gloss of the paint to be gone as the pastels will stick easier

However don't wet your project. Simply use small makeup or cheap small soft paint brushes and streak the weathering like a rail car
