Had index finger surgery can't wait to get back to working with leather again. I don't leave many thoughts but I do watch your videos.

Wow! That’s really beautiful. I have to say that using a “swivel knife” is not the easiest thing to do. I just tried that on a leather portfolio that I made for my wife. I have to tell you that it was not easy to use that devil swivel knife. I usually have good coordination between my eyes and my hands, but that swivel knife is a hole other thing! I’m in awe of your skill there. Best regards, Richard

Great lesson. I always strop my x-acto blades on a piece of leather to prevent the blade from feeling sticky. It also gives my fingertips a better sense of feel.
@jestillwell19646 жыл бұрын
PhotofriendlyJR You gave the exact tip I thought about. Before I use an xacto blade with a factory grind, I will sharpen it to remove all grind marks. Then I strop the blade before each use.

Hi Chuck - could you do a vid, or better, two or three vids on the suit of armour please? It is gorgeous!! I love your presentations as you are so infectiously enthusiastic. Thank you. :)
@WeaverLeatherSupply6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your compliments on the suits! I want to do a video on a suit so badly!!! I can’t say it’s actually in the works, but...I am working on some thoughts on how to do it. It would be a long one, but, we can break it into parts like Cuirass, Chause, Pauldrons, Arm Guards, Couters, Besegews and War Belts…and then Cloak, Frogs, Scabbards, Helm…I can’t stop!!! Give us a bit and I’ll see if I can talk the boss into one!
@filstewart23806 жыл бұрын
i bet I'm not the only one with interest, and you love the project too. It's gorgeous. Just tell the boss a British Veteran requested this as a Black Dog Project - I am doing my best with deep depression, and having projects to focus on, even though I I don't have the gear to actually make things, gives me a real sense of a potential future...

I think, like a lot of folk, the first interest is body armour. Chest, back and throat. How to make a ripped looking abdomen piece in particular...

Love your vids very informitive. I do have a question i want to make some small projects like coin purses but what i have is leather rements from hoby loby and it seems a lil to flopy and all i have for making stitching holes is and old stitching chisel from my father inlaw. Dosent make holes very well kinda narrow slits. Any way what type of leather whould you sugest for coin purses and what weight, maybe 3oz? I was also thinking of a small hole punch the smalest i kind find to make sewing holes kinda like the kits have done to them what do you think. Well ty for listening looking forward to your reply.
@WeaverLeatherSupply6 жыл бұрын
I would recommend using 3 to 5 oz leather. We have a 4-5 oz leather available that would work very well www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/56111/001/48. A hole punch will work for your stitching holes if you can find one that is small enough, the only problem with that is you can only punch one hole at a time and it may be difficult to keep them in a straight line. We have some chisels coming very soon that would work perfect for what you are trying to accomplish. We'll keep you posted once they are available on our website!

Hi Chuck, Thank you for the great videos! Do you dip die your belts and armor also? How do you prevent bleed? My concern is dip dying a pair of bracers or a belt and having them ruin someones costume? Is that even a concern with the pro dye?
@WeaverLeatherSupply6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I dip dye most everything for a nice consistent outcome in dye color. With the Pro Dye, yes, you still have to be cautious about color transfer, but it's not as risky as other alcohol- or water-based dyes. I generally hit it with a very light coat of oil after its dyed and then finish with about two coats of a topcoat like Fiebing's Leather Balm with Atom Wax (www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/27339/001/113) or Saddle Lac (www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/54567/001/113). When applying the top coat, be sure to hit everything: top, sides and back.

What oz leather do you use for your top layer here?
@WeaverLeatherSupply6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, This is cut from our 4/5 oz. Veg Tan leather Single Shoulders www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/51584/001/46
@rich64896 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Would it be possible to make a belt like this? That piece seems too small for it. Also, there is no sealant needed for the suede, correct?
@WeaverLeatherSupply6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, You could definitely make a belt like this! Suede is very difficult to seal as the sealer tends to take away the suppleness of the suede. We would recommend using three layers for the belt, a 4 to 6 oz. leather for the inside of the belt (the part that will lay against your clothes), then your suede on top of that and then a 3 to 4 oz. leather for your filigree top layer. Hope this helps!
