You would say, “give me my stein and fill it up.” WoW! That was weird.

She actually did not have a whole lot of information on it. I noticed a crack on the base too. Condition is everything. Values have really gone down. The millennial are not collectors. They are into disposables...These steins are works of art. If you ever have questions feel free to contact me. I have collected them for over 30 years and have many books. Would be happy to help you.

I would like to know what the point of that slogan is around the base “a good man is praised three times and scolded nine times“it sounds like it means if you want to have a good character you need to be lectured three times as often as you are complemented. But that seems like a rather inexplicable conclusion

@@kitrichardson5573 There you go, pretty exact translation: You may have to praise the well-behaved man, who pushed "all nine" three times. (It's a reference to the drawing. Unlike Bowling, Kegeln only uses 9 Bowling Pins. And the bowling ball is smaller and has no holes btw.)

@@kitrichardson5573 Der brave Mann ist wohl zu loben, der dreimal eine Neun geschoben. It refers to the game of Kegeln. Der brave Mann is the good man. The game is played in teams. So the team is praising him for his winning. 3 times alle Neune is a high score. The word geschoben means pushed the ball. The good man who pushed all nine for three times has to be well praised. It is the cheering for a master player.

Millennials aren't collectors cause they can't afford collections or places to house collections LOL. Gotta have a place to live and good doorbells income to collect.

The printing on the jug says "Der brave Mann ist wohl zu loben, der dreimal 'alle neun' geschoben." which translates to "The good man shall indeed be praised, who pushed 'all nine (pins)' three times." in reference to bowling. There's no connection to scolding, probably the translator mistook "geschoben" for "gescholten" which would translate to scolded.

It basically says to praises someone who scored three consecutive strikes, which is much, much harder to do in German "Kegeln" than in American "Bowling". A lot of clubs have the tradition or rule that if someone does this, they instantly win the game.

@@1845Raven German beer steins are probably more of a niche, or specialized, category of collecting. This appraiser, Suzanne Perrault, is a recognized expert in the decorative arts/ceramics, but I think she specializes in tile. I always enjoy her segments on the Roadshow.

No one in Germany calls thar a "Beer Stein". It is a "Bierkrug". Speak "Beerkroog". A jar. And the text is - as far as I can see - about German bowling, what is called "Kegeln".

Yes, and the correct translation of the rhyme written on the "stein" reads as: "To be appraised is the one, who showed to be able to knock over all nine pins at once three times in a row". (Don't unterstand, why the appraiser team could not get the meaning at all and came up with such bad translation 🤔)
@kokoshneta
@kokoshneta Жыл бұрын
@@andreamaskan9415Probably because it’s not exactly obvious. For one thing, a verb is elided, which makes it harder to parse grammatically. Without the verb at the end, it looks like a parallel structure: ‘the brave man should be praised; the [dreimal alle neun] pushed away’. Even knowing that there’s an eluded verb at the end, a literal translation would be, “The good man should be praised who three times pushed all nine” - it’s not exactly obvious that that’s about bowling. It’s hardly surprising that people who presumably don’t speak more than school German wouldn’t get that it refers to a hat-trick striker. (Also, the good bowler is to be _praised_, not appraised. Appraisal is what the experts do when they put values on antiques here; praising is what you do when you extol the virtues of someone.)

Oh no! If you do not know about the text on a pice, ask a German. Not somebody who speaks a little and knows nothing about german culture. The text referes to the german sport "Kegeln" not bowling. The highest score is "alle Neune" = all nines. The game has nine pins. If you get it 3 times in a row, you are a master. That for he is "wohl zu loben" = praise him for that. Mugs like that are a beloved prices to win at a competition or a gift for a lover of Kegeln. All this "beersteins" are made for decoration, never to drink out of it. A Bierkrug for drinking is made very simple and has nothing more than the logo of the brewery and a simple lid. What one can find with the decorative images and pretty lids are all collectibles, souveniers. If they are dedicated to a millitary corps, the owner had left, they are worth some money, bc they are really old.

Well, if you want to get pedantic about it: Boch is a Duchy of Lorraine company. They started in Audun-le-Tiche in the Duchy of Lorraine. Then they got manufacturing space in the Province of Luxembourg (at that time part of the Holy Roman Empire). Then Villeroy got started in Wallerfangen (also in the Duchy of Lorraine). Then, 61 years after their start, Boch bought a building in Mettlach (at some point moving their headquarters there). At that time it was under the control of France (Napoleon). If you ignore the French control as a temporary thing (20/20 hindsight and all that) then it would be Prussian. The two companies merged in 1836. By that point Wallerfangen and Mettlach were in Prussia. And Audun-le-Tiche (if they still had manufacturing there) was in France. So in all that you could choose them to be Lorraine company, a Holy Roman Empire company, a French company, or even a Prussian company. No where in there was it a "German" company *when starting out*, which is what they tend to talk about on this antique show. 118 years after V&B started out Germany was founded. That whole section of Europe was so back-and-forth-y I'm not sure where she was getting the Belgian but I probably just missed it.
