The legendary singer talks about his controversial 1982 magazine interview in which he stated that homosexuality was "a way of life that I've grown accustomed to." He tells Nancy Giles why he wasn't concerned about the potential impact on his career, despite receiving death threats. "It bothered me that it bothered people!" he laughed.

At age 82, Johnny Mathis still exudes all the graciousness and class that has been his signature for decades. I grew up listening to Johnny sing, and just like Baseball, Apple Pie, Hamburgers and Coca-Cola, I can't imagine American life without him.

That is one of the most beautiful ❤️ quotes about America I ever heard. Thank you for showing your gratitude about the U.S. So many think we think we're better than another human being from another country, but that's incorrect. It's national pride and showing support for freedoms and democracy that every human being should have and not be afraid.

@@kristinesmart9932 Thank you Kristine, for the kind words. I'm not sure if you read my other comment about my encounter with Johnny, so I will repeat it to you since it is relevant. Several years back we went to see Johnny in live performance at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the town from which Johnny originally came. In his youth, he was a gifted singer and athlete. At a young age, he was picked to represent the U.S.A. in the Olympics and had the chance to participate in the Olympics games. His singing career was also gaining momentum, and he was forced to make a decision between becoming a well-known athlete or a singer...with an unknown future. Fortunately for us, he chose to become a singer. Davies Symphony Hall was packed, and Johnny was backed-up by a full orchestra as well as his personal musical family of musicians. He sang many of his old legendary love songs, as well as many standards and tunes from the Great American Songbook. The audience loved it, and he sang two encore performances before the applause finally faded down. Since I worked in the music business and knew his pianist Scott Lavender, I went back stage to say hello to Johnny and tell him how much I loved his performance...and him. I walked into the large "Green Room" where about three dozen people were waiting to get autographs and photos with Johnny. Many of the waiting fans were V.I.P. big shots in show business, politics, and business. As we were all waiting for Johnny to join us, a wheelchair-bound elderly man in his late eighties or nineties, was rolled into a corner of the room. He had a veteran's hat on and was wearing several medals. As the V.I.P. big shots and their dates all positioned themselves to be first in line to have their moment in the spotlight with Johnny, the room was abuzz with energy. Finally, the dressing room door opened and Johnny walked in to applause. He smiled and looked around the room, filled with his waiting fans. Without a moment's hesitation, he immediately walked over to the lone elderly veteran sitting in his wheelchair in the corner. Johnny knelt beside the elderly man, took his hand and quietly began speaking to him. Suddenly, all the big shots were reduced to very unimportant people, as Johnny concentrated his entire focus and energy on this one very special fan. After a couple of minutes, he signed an autograph and took a picture with the elderly man, who was wheeled out by his caretaker. I was speechless, as I realized how Johnny gave his attention to perhaps the only real V.I.P. in the room. This gesture made everyone else look small and petty by comparison. He graciously greeted all his fans, and signed autographs and took photos with everyone. I told him how much I loved the concert, and I said "please do the world a favor, and just keep singing forever...we need you that much." He laughed and said "there are some promises I just can't make." Later, I chatted with his guitar player and some of the members of his musical family, which consisted of musicians and production assistants who have been with him for years. All ages, all colors and all types were his family of musicians and assistants. In all the years I've been going to live concerts, I can't recall any star who was as gracious, thoughtful and classy as Johnny Mathis. He is truly one of a kind, and although he will not be singing forever, he leaves us with a very rich musical legacy through his recordings. One of my favorite performances of Johnny is a short recording he did on the Mike Douglas TV Show back in the late 1970's It is one of the most sincere, dramatic and heartfelt songs he ever sang, and I highly recommend you watch it. It's on You-Tube: Johnny Mathis- " Over The Weekend" Incredible singing !!

After a packed concert that Johnny Mathis performed at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, I went backstage to meet him in the 'Green Room'. Many important V.I.P. people were there waiting to meet Johnny. A disabled elderly veteran was wheeled in amidst the fans, and when Johnny entered the room to a round of applause, he ignored all the big shots and immediately walked over to the elderly vet in the wheelchair. Johnny knelt at the man's side, took his hand and quietly spoke to him, as everyone in the room suddenly realized how truly unimportant they really were. Johnny is all class. A heart filled with love, respect and graciousness. You just can't help but love such a great guy. And by the way, he's also the best singer who ever lived.

@@nickgreatpwrful5754 Nothing was said in ignorance; God clearly speaks against homosexuality in the Bible. Nothing was said in hatred, this is a genuine expression of concern for this man's eternal soul. The only hatred visible here is your own intolerance for anyone who dares speak with conviction about something, and in so doing, goes against "political correctness." I happen to enjoy Johnny Mathis myself, and my beliefs about homosexuality have nothing to do with it, as I am sure is the case with Jimmy Sapien, otherwise, he would have never come to this video in the first place.

Right, Bonnie! I always wonder why all the nosiness about his sexuality. I suspected for years, but what stood out for me were two incredible things!!! He was sooooo handsome! His was THE best voice in popular music. In a class by itself. No one seems to mention that. I’m heterosexual. I’m 74 now, white, and brought up listening to him. I always stared at his pictures and wondered how anyone could be so handsome. His race wasn’t an issue. I think like Nat King Cole, and Harry Belafonte, his race had a positive affect on us in our youth, as well. As did all the great black rock & Roll figures through the 1950-1960s. He is an American treasure. Classy and sweet, he taught us all - all colors and sexual orientation - irrelevant- he taught us love and romance through his songs. ❤️ And, like Elvis, but in a different way, Johnny Mathis was crazy good looking! lol

I became a fan of Johnny Mathis as a child at Christmas time. It wasn't Christmas without the wonderful music of Johnny Mathis. Of course, I loved all of John's music. I'm now a young 61 years old. I collected his music through the years. A few years back, I was finally about to see him live in concert. I must have seen him at least 6 times and every show was great. It didn't matter to me what the color of his skin was or his sexual orientation. It was something that I never even thought about. The highlight for me being a huge fan, was the last concert I had seen John. It was a Theater in the round. It was actually a large tent. It was called the Cape Cod Melody Tent. The performer would have to go down and up the stairs to go and leave the stage. The audience was on both side of the stairs. John would start the show and take a break. I happened to be where the stairs was. When he was taking his break and coming up the stairs, I held out my hand and John stopped and shook hands with me. He came back to finish the show and he was just wonderful. After multiple encores the band kept playing and the show came to an end. John came back up the stairs to go to the dressing room. Even though he was nice enough to stop once and shake my hand, he had seen me again standing there looking at him leaving. He turned around and once again shook my hand. I was in awe. I managed to get some words out, John, you put on a wonderful show. He gave me a big smile and said, thank you very much. A moment I shall never forget.

@Truthfears Guilty Just remember the people that Jesus Christ hung around with. He told his followers, 1Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam isin thine own eye?

My father worked in television and radio starting back in the 50's and he knew Johnny was gay. My mother, who was also in the industry, told me Johnny had confided in him. She told me this back in the late 70's. Apparently a few people knew, and they all respected his need for secrecy at the time. He was always decent, kind, and appreciative to everyone in the industry, and was universally liked. And, of course, he has that voice. Always loved his voice. Glad to see the sun now shines through all the facets of the jewel that he is.

I am a 64 year old white guy who lives in WV and hunts squirrels. Johnny Mathis has the most beautiful voice ever put into a human being and I don't care at all about how he finds love. I am so grateful that I have lived in a time when I could hear him sing whenever I wanted and whatever joy he may find in life, I wish that earnestly for him. I sing a little and I have had no greater influence than him. I am so looking forward to hearing his new CD, and I hope he can make a dozen more. The world is so much better for his having been in it.

If you enjoy killing squirrels so much that you list that as basically what you want to be identified as, you sound like you would be charming company on a world cruise! Murdering these charming, hapless, joyful, magnificent little creatures, while thrilling to their gruesome, twitching "death throws," and leaving their mates mateless, and their babies to starve to death, nauseates me to even contemplate.
@keithellison6009
@keithellison6009 6 жыл бұрын
Lord, Milton Moore, your ignorance is profoundly astonishing. Thrilling to their "death throws?" Leaving their babies to starve? Leaving their mates....(they are not monogamous creatures) Most wild life continues to exist because hunters have historically supported measures to protect them. When hunters are gone, wild life will not be far behind. Incidentally, I did not list that as my essential identity, but rather as a metaphor for being a homespun good old boy. Your ignorance apparently extends into areas of abstraction.

Milton Moore have you ever eaten meat of any kind? ALL animals that are butchered suffer far more in the slaughterhouses than a squirrel that is shot mercifully in the wild. You do realize that you eat corpses, carcasses and carrion unless you consume a plant- based diet, don't you?

see i always thought the whole "singers should sing" "actors should act" notion is a little dehumanizing. Regardless of profession, which at the end of the day is just a job, people are human beings, first and foremost, and singers/actors/dancers second. Sexuality to me is more than just a sexual preference. it can be, as johnny mathis quoted, a "way of life". some gay people are proud of the rights they fought for and it has in of itself become its own culture. reducing it to a sex thing, or something to be taboo and not to be discussed, is extremely reductive. I'm glad he came out and I'm glad people are realizing that gay people have always been an important part of history, be it political leaders, revolutionaries, or even just singers. I don't have an opinion on the George Clooney thing but I do believe actors are humans first and have every right to express their own political feelings.

You are both correct. There was a song by Bruce Springsteen years ago that was named something like 57 channels and nothing's on. I feel we now have so many platforms to communicate we don't. Elvis once responded to a question about the Vietnam War by saying "I'm just an entertainer so I'd rather keep my opinions to myself." And George Clooney uses his celebrity status to bring causes important to him and feels comfortable doing it. I love Johnny Mathis because he's a great singer and was popular when people had a bit more class, manners, discretion and the ability to know if opinions differ, it's ok to agree to disagree. I've raised my children telling them, do your best to be happy and be interesting. I've always thought discretion and privacy are important. But being a gay person when Johnny Mathis was had to be tough and maybe he feels it's something he can reach many more people with people with that struggle with being gay or black in the 50's. I've also told my children you should not have the expectation that everyone will agree with you and that's ok.And if you feel strongly, debate, cajole, argue. But you aren't going to get everybody and that's ok. As a side note, I'm seeing him for the first time in a couple of weeks and can't.wait.

LOL +Bill Thompson ummmm NO being gay is most certainly not a choice of a Lifestyle. If sexual orientation was simply a choice then tell us when it was that you decided to 'become straight'. I have not ever met a gay person who told me that they one day decided to become gay nor choose to be gay.
@thejupiter2574

"The Agenda" as in the 'gay agenda' a term which a few years ago was coined by several anti gay Christian organizations against gay people trying to have representation in the media and in other areas. I really don't like it when actors use the stage for their political point of views at all the award shows, that is distracting However, for gay people to hear from gay entertainers about their life struggles that makes them a Human being and shows the rest of the world that gay people can be anyone from a relative a friend to a favorite entertainer is very important and then you see either the tolerance or the hatred response i.e. as when singer/ actor Jim Nabors passed away recently there were many religious hate comments on his Inspirational song posts because since Nabors never mentioned publicly about being gay his religious music fans of fifty years suddenly finding out went nuts and threatened to burn all his records even though he was the same singer they enjoyed for fifty years THAT is why exposure is important.

Use to 'workout' early AM with Johnny in West Hollywood in 80s... Did not know it for months.😊 Guy comes in in hoodie. 2 or 3 of at gym at 7AM nod, say goodmorning and continue...Guy in hoodie is obviously fit. One day, leaving as guy in hoodies comes in. Hold door for him. OMG Its Johnny or John as he preferred to be called. We became friendly. We'd see each other at some store, driving, at restaurant. Sometimes he'd come over at a deli and pick off my plate. It was great. I was a fan long before meeting him. More so after talking with him over several years. Very cool and sweet. Had no idea he was track star at SF STATE. No wonder he was fit. Hugs John..Big Hugs and good wishes.
