I learned how to play golf by reading the Lee Trevino book of golf at about 13 years of age, now 63 and can listen to his stories all day long.

Trevino and his lightness and humor helped him to overcome any nervousness. Lee didn't really care , cause he had little to lose. He could joke around. This fought off any tendencies to yip. He was a tremendous putter and driver. Totally himself. Relaxed out there.

Trevino said the reason he won the US Open at Oak Hill in 1968 was that it rained every night so the greens were soft enough to hold his low iron shots.

Lee was certainly very straight and when he got on the tee he wouldn't hesitate. Yes he was certainly great and sometimes people would hate to see Lee put Jack into his Open gate. But regardless of all of that Trevino had many tricks under his holding hat. One was his burning wedge that gave a decided edge to beat you on the back nine. Yes he was mighty darn fine.

I saw an interview with Jack years ago and the subject of ball strikers came up. Jack said two names: Hogan and Trevino.

@@blujay9191 apparently Nicklaus said that to Trevino after he won his first US Open in 1968. Told him he didn’t know just how good he was and the win was no fluke. Trevino was recently just a club pro and a lot of people thought he caught lightning in a bottle and wouldn’t be heard from again. You have to wonder if Jack regretted giving him that boost in confidence after Trevino beat him in 1971..lol

@@tlist1970 .. Another great rivalry for sure. I had heard that Lee was "that little Mexican guy in Dallas" (his words, not mine) who was playing money games against the tour pros and doing pretty well. Supposedly after one such game, Ray Floyd told people they needed to make room for him on tour.
@tlist1970

@@blujay9191 I heard the same thing. Word got around like who’s this club pro that keeps beating every tour pro passing through Texas?. He was actually older than Nicklaus and had a late start. What’s impressive is when you watch Trevino at a golf clinic. Great knowledge about the golf swing and his tips are easy to remember and use. Never had a lesson either.

A reporter asked Trevino what it was like to make a pressure putt on 18 that’s the difference of tens of thousands of dollars. He said real pressure was putting for fifty dollars when you don’t have fifty dollars.

I always thought that some players seemed to fold up when in contention against the dominant player of their time and some elevated their game. Lee seemed to really belong to that second category.

Tiger had no rivalry. In tennis I grew up with Graf v Seles, Sampras v Agassi, Nadal v Federer etc…. Modern golf doesn’t have epic RIVALRIES. It’s hard to sell golf or capture the imagination of the broader public without that crucial component IMO.

Jack played against legends in their prime...Palmer, Trevino, Player, Casper, Watson, Miller, Ballesteros, Weiskoff. You literally can't pick a single player you Tiger played in his prime (1997-2010) who won 5+ majors during the same time. The field was deeper for tiger but it was missing the legendary competitors you need to compete against to ellivate your stature.

In reality Jack would have won probably 5 or 6 majors today. Match that against 15 of Tiger and you get to realise how great Tiger really is. BTW, I'm not a Tiger fan, don't like him and never had. I'm a huuuuuge Golden Bear fan. But facts are facts. I honestly think you never see another tiger again.
@nicholasschroeder3678
@nicholasschroeder3678 3 жыл бұрын
@@dougzembiec9995 I agree that Tiger is the most transcendent player the game's seen--though I never liked him either--but I think it's a real stretch to cut Jack's majors by 65+% in putting him in the current game. For 20 years, he was the guy to beat in the majors, and finished 1st or 2nd in nearly half of them. He wasn't nearly as single-minded as Tiger was--he didn't half to be or want to be--but he had comparable talent, and he never bothered to develop a first rate short game. He might have had he been in the modern environment. Further, those players were grittier back then because they had to be: the money for place wasn't that great. They also came from more modest environments. No one can know what would have happened. What we do know is that Tiger dominated the game more completely for 10 years, and Jack did less completely for 20. It's worth pointing out that Jack finished second in the 60 Open playing the last two rounds with Hogan, then he won his last major 26 years later beating out Seve and Norman. That's a hell of a long time at the top. It's also worth examining Hogan's career: absent that accident, neither of them may be in the same ballpark. Check it out closely: it's pretty astonishing. The whole GOAT thing really doesn't have much validity in any sport: you can really only compare an athlete against the competition and conditions he faced.

@@nicholasschroeder3678 I do not like comparing people from different eras to others. I have watched Jack play many times, and he could hit the ball 300+ yards. But his short game was not as good as Tigers. And in the Majors, I will contend that Jack only had 15 to 20 others to worry about, where Tiger had 50 to 60 to worry about. Jack was brilliant during his career, no doubt about that. But I watched Jack play Sam Snead when he was 21 and Sam was 52, at Pebble, and he only beat Sam by 1 shot on the last. I have watched Golf since 1969 and seen all the greats. But in my opinion, and only an opinion. Tiger is just that bit better. I could also add that if Tiger did not have those injuries and lost nearly 5 years, he may have more Majors than Jack. And I will add that Tiger brought more fans and sponsors to the game, including non golfers who turned on their TV's to watch Tiger. As Phil said, Tiger brought the Million dollar pay days. Cheers
