An American Airlines jet collided in midair with a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter while on approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The passenger jet was en route from Wichita with 60 passengers and four crew onboard.

They actually collided. They 'hit' each other due to their flight paths conflicting. The headline reads as it does for two reasons. The video shows the jet on approach to landing and it obviously hits a hidden object. the jet was very likely flying faster than the helicopter; when objects collide, the one travelling the fastest is generally considered to be the one that 'hits' the other. You're reading fault or intent into a headline that is only talking about what physically happened.

@@movingforde I'm a pilot and I call Bogus! The airplane was travelling at 120+ knots and the helicopter was travelling at 80+ knots and you say the helicopter hit the airplane from behind? Have you looked at the radar returns for the airplane and the helicopter before the collision. The airplane turned final for runway 33 right in front of the helicopter. It's the helicopters fault because he requested and was given clearance by controllers to avoid the jet visually, but the airplane turned into the helicopter's path in order to land on Rwy 33.

ATC asked the helo pilot if he saw the commercial jet and helo pilot confirmed minutes before crash. Commercial jet was about 300feet and moments away from safely lading. ATC audio and flight path of Army helo needs to be released. Video shows the helo clearly going straight for the plane even though they confirmed they had visual.

There was Russians on board....only thing I see is a deliberate crash. Helicopter headed right for the plane and has plenty of space to divert.

A close examination of radar tracks shows the airplane turn into the path of the helicopter. The aircraft was directed to do so by ATC, so the airline pilots were flying where they were directed. The helicopter was on an essentially straight track before collision. It is possible that they did not anticipate the CRJ turning in front of them. They may have had visual and taken their eyes off the aircraft as it started it's turn to final. It is also possible the helicopter pilot misidentified the aircraft he was seeing and was actually looking at one further away (ATC audio indicates several other aircraft were also coming in to land). There are better ways to take someone out than wasting 3 military personnel and a helicopter.
