Nice. I did this temp probe mod with my old kettle but the rubber eventually wore out from the heat. Doing a chicken wing cook will do a number on that rubber. A sns port mod works better since it's made of stainless steel. Also, I installed a NPT port next to the sns probe port on my classic Weber kettle which is nice because it allows one to thread in a high-quality dial temperature gauge such as the Tel-Tru which is half-inch NPT. Sometimes those probes and electronics get cumbersome and all I need is a big dial thermometer. Also, my dial thermometers go up to 1,000 degrees. I've had the Thermoworks hit top end and blank out. I even had a Tel-tru dial blow out once because max was only 550 F. So now my dial thermometers are 800 or 1,000 F Max. Thanks for posting!

I've made several modificatios to my webber I added a 1in air hole with a damper cover just under the slow and sear basket for better air controle. I also did the probe gromit. I cut a top vent damper in half and and made a new vent about 3 in from the bottom edge of the lid. I run the top vent closed and the lower lid vent open about half for the first hour of smoking drawing the smoke directly across the meat. Then I close that and use only the 1in hole I put in the bottom and top vent only I can keep it 225 if I chose very easily. I feel like the webber kettle is a great little smoker with some modifications. It wasn't really designed to do indirect cooking but it can and with a few add ons and tweeks it dose a great job. Agreed the side shelf is worth every penny. Also with the extra air I can open things up and hit 450 really quickly for pizza

Cool mods! One observation on the BBQ GURU: The clean out paddles don't actually sweep across the full circle of the kettle. At around 12:38 you can see the V-shaped break in the scratch marks that is outside the paddle's range of motion (it's just above and to the right of the vent hole; you can also see the paddles stop on either side at 12:46 and 12:59). I haven't measured it ('cause I don't own a BBQ GURU), but it sure looks like it would fit there without needing to do the Dremel grinding on the GURU adapter.
@progers5019
@progers5019 5 жыл бұрын
Nice observation iaeen. You are correct. There is a couple inches further around that is between the paddle action. I chose that location so it would be in the front right quarter and closer in alignment with the probe port and the wires for the thermometer and guru would locate closer together. The guru adaptor had to be on that level so it would be beneath the charcoal grate, and miss the paddles. Both items could be located further around in that spot, but I wanted all the wires closer to the front quarter. Thanks for the great observation and feedback. And, thanks for watching and commenting.

Not technically, but there would probably be more concentrated heat on that side of the SnS. I know charcoal can be spread over the entire charcoal grate and the guru adapter is just below. I like the way both you of you guys trick out your Weber cookers. The main reason I bought my Weber Premium Kettle on Craigslist for $40 was so I could spend all of my money on the accessories and pimping it out with all kinds of mods like you guys do. The poor guy that I bought my kettle from had only used it 2 or 3 times to grill some burgers and dogs ... he never even used the ash catcher because he didn't know what it was for. The bottom of the kettle was full of ash but it was all dry because he stored the kettle inside his garage the whole time .... like for 9 years because it's a 2009 model. With still a lot of shiny porcelain left on the inside of the kettle, it was super easy to clean up just like new. Just now finished cooking a couple of racks of St. Louis ribs -- the best ribs I've ever made or tasted .... ever. Anyway, you guys are the best. I learn a whole lot from ya. :)

Hey John, I've been a Craftsman tool guy all my life. Not the very best but definitely a good line of tools for shade tree guys, along with their line of power tools. I totally understand your feelings on mods not needed to use kettles just as they are. Some of us just gotta do it. Thanks-phil

Hey Daryl. If it's the one beside the steps, I bought that from Home Depot. They have a coupe different ones. Also, if you want something a little larger, SAMS has one you should look at. Thanks for stopping by.

Dave, I actually have a port exactly like that on my offst stick burner, and a spare in my box. I actually like the one I installed on the kettle better for the kettle. Anyway, hole is bored and this one works just fine. Thanks-phil
