the synchronization is what made so many people complain about these transmissions. The programming from the manufacturer cause a hard shift when dogging. ZF even made a statement that it had nothing to do with their design but was a software issue. The software is supposed to match the engine speed with the shaft speed. That delay in power is noticeable when driving.

Thank you got your reply. A friend has a job at Chrysler Auburn Hills in their testing lab. I recall now that he said he was testing one of their new transmissions (possibly this one) that they were having failures in the field with. He said he could cause it to break almost immediately and could repeat the damage over and over just by aggressively moving the throttle in a certain way while when the car was on the dyno. I saw you demonstrate that spline clutch and it looked like problems to me. I will ask him next time I see him if this was the transmission he was talking about and what the failure was.
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the slipping of the clutches with some versions of the TCM software caused the clutches to vibrate so much that they caused the snap ring that held in the clutch backing plate to vibrate out; Game over! A software update and a new or repaired transmission addresses the problem. It sounds like product testing was cut short and the public proving grounds (the customers) were used instead.
@paulj98213 жыл бұрын
@@WeberAuto Actually the problems started with ZF not Chrysler. In fact the ZF-9 is considered the black sheep over at ZF Friedrichshafen. There is a reason every manufacturer That jumped on early into the ZF-9 trans all had issues. FCA's big major issue initially was that the snap ring wasn't installed correctly, thus causing serious malfunction which would lead to catastrophic failure. This was rectified in late 2015. The next issue was software programing and while they fixed whatever major issues there were, no amount of software will ever changed the inherent flaws of the ZF-9 design when downshifting.

Great video! , one thing im wondering is that why do they bother with these dog clutches at all , Why not use other disc type of clutches instead like in every other transmission? Because this is transaxle and needs to be compact, do these dog clutches save lot of space compared to regular multi disc clutch? If yes then why is it not more common, are they less comfortable etc so that they are only used where they must be used to save space for example like in fwd transverse application?

Love your videos there very informative. I have this tranny in my 18 jeep renegade with 2.4 engine I know alot of people don't like these trannys. I like this tranny it's got quick shifts. Yes there are things I don't like about it like when you go from park to reverse it has slight delay then when you go from reverse to drive it's got about a 8 to 10 second delay before it engages so I have to tell my wife when she puts it in gear don't give it any gas till it engages. The only other thing I don't like is it does have a aggressive engagement from 4 th to 5th. So my question is 4th to 5th aggressive because of the dog clutch not being timed just right it doesn't do it all the time mostly under moderate throttle

Are the teeth staggered like that so the gears can mesh in 2 steps? As in the gears drop halfway together turn a little more then slide the rest of the way? These 9 speed ZF transmissions are some of the least reliable transmissions that have been sold in decades. On top of that the programming is usually pretty poor too. Some manufacturers do a better job programming the shift logic, but Fiat does by far the worst job. Given that the vehicle is new that could easily be an issue with how Fiat programmed the transmission for your Jeep. The first thing I would do is insist that the dealer check to see if there are any software/firmware updates for the transmission computer. Otherwise the transmission is already starting to slip and fail.
@ohcsgroup67705 жыл бұрын
@@jblyon2 Thank you very much for your answer, dear Sir. I'll try with our FCA representative to upgrade transmision software. Not sure they have that program. I'll see.
@paulj98214 жыл бұрын
@@jblyon2 You are talking nonsense. Infact out of Chrysler, Honda/Acura and Land Rover, FIAT has refined the software best. Honda eventually did a good job on the UK crv. Guess how I know these things cause I work for a living on these cars. Chrysler was the first to debut the ZF-9 on the 2014 Cherokee KL. It took them till 2016 to fix both the snap ring issue and software which in certain cases was damaging the transmission. This also happened to Acura. Anyone with common sense would have known to never buy a brand new vehicle with a unproven, new and vastly complicated transmission. The reason you hear so much of the issues regarding the ZF-9 in conjunction with FIAT is because they were the face for the ZF-9 and they also were the biggest investors for it. They had the most number of vehicles relying on that transmission. This is why they had no choice but to do whatever was possible to get the software up to par. One more VERY important thing to add here. ZF is an amazing transmission company but they are ultimately to blame for all of this. German's are a very prideful people especially when it comes to automobiles. ZF tried to blame AMERICAN driving habits on the software AI not functioning as they intended. They worked hand in hand with FCA for many years to fix this issue. FCA is the largest customer of ZF transmissions with BMW being second.

What keeps those dog (spline) sliding clutches from wearing or grinding upon engagement? Amazing amount of speeds, but a mechanical dog clutch in an automatic? Clutches or bands have always been used for smooth, long lasting service. I have never seen this before. Seems like a point of rapid wear leading to failure. Is this the problem these things are having in the field? Or are the clutches manipulated by the software somehow to synchronize them before applying? Very interesting demonstration, thank you very much. Always wondered how they got so many speeds out of these and how many clutches/bands were needed to accomplish this feat.
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The dog clutch engagements are synchronized by computer controlled clutch packs. There is a slight amount of programmed clutch slippage required during some shifts to accomplish this. There is a special transmission fluid required to hold up to the programmed slippage. The fluid contains a limited slip additive to help the clutches and the fluid survive. The problems you may have heard of are related to the programming to control the clutch packs and their slippage rates. I hope that helps.

Chrysler used different software to control their versions of the 9-speed; it did not go well. They have updated the software by now and the problem is rare to hear about now. Acura may have a software update for the transmission controller to address the occasional rough shift. If you were going to have a problem with your transaxle, it would have happened by now. The 948TE is the version that Chrysler builds here in the USA. The 9HP is the version build by ZF elsewhere. They are basically the same transmission with a few minor differences. Theoretically they operate the same way. The US built version used software provided by Chrysler rather than ZF. It is my understanding that the Chrysler software was terrible in the first model year, but has been revised to be better since then. The terrible software actually caused some premature transmission failures and a lot of unhappy customers.

My grandmother has a 2019 Pacifica Limited and I'd say that the 9 Speed works best with the V6 than 4 cylinder, my mother now has a 21 Stelvio Sport Ti with the 8 Speed Auto which I find inferior to the 9 speed.

Personally, I think they have worked out the issues that first appeared in the early models. Thanks for watching!
@Jcmichalik29 жыл бұрын
+Stuart Haight I work at a Chrysler Dealer as a trans tech and from what I have seen, all the problems with this transmission and any software calibrations were for the majority of 2014 and early 2015 vehicles (14-15 Cherokee and 15 200). As for the ProMaster City, I have yet to see nor hear about any issues with any of them, which could either be due to the low volume of them out there when compared to the amount of Cherokees and 200s and/or that they had the issues ironed out by their release (which I THINK was around the first of the year). So far though, all the later model 2015s have been doing great and I imagine things will continue to improve over time. I personally say to wait for the 2016 ProMasters (or any 9-speed vehicle for that matter) to be safe. All in all though, they are slick little units with shifts that are (now) pretty good. I would love to have a vehicle with one in them personally (been eyeballing a V6 200 myself).

I do not have any information on any Honda issues with this transaxle, but I do know the first model in 2014 Jeeps had problems related to the software for the transaxle controller not controlling the transaxle correctly. This issue resulted in a snap ring coming loose inside the transmission causing other damage. Later model year software and transmissions have been improved greatly. I always recommend avoiding the first model year of a brand new transmission design for this very reason; they always have initial problems that get fixed in the next model year. Honda did not start using this transaxle until 2016, so I would think it would be a better version of the transaxle. Best wishes!

@@WeberAuto Again the snap ring issue was a result of incorrectly assembling it in the trans. Also FCA increased the torque for the shift points in the 2014-2015 models. 2016+ all had reduced torque in the shifts, thus increasing the delay's for downshifting. The reason why FCA initially did this was because they were concerned about the ZF-9 less than luckster downshifts. FCA was the first company to unveil the ZF-9 for the industry, packed in their new Cherokee. They had already invested 1 billion dollars in the manufacturing plant for the ZF-9 trans. This transmission was meant to be used in all of their Transverse vehicle lines for the next 8 years. FCA and ZF have one of the closest relationships(second to BMW) in the industry. ZF and FCA worked a compensatory business deal out after the ZF-9 disaster. All of FCA's Newley designed vehicles for 2020-2021+ onwards will be using all of ZF's next gen Hybrid transmissions. Not to mention, we get a very good special price on the ZF-8 from 2016+. Just bare in mind, while ZF engineered one of the best NON DCT 8 speeds in the industry, they did screw up the ZF-9 and they weren't entirely honest about it back in 2011 before our Company went heap in with them. Heads rolled, people in prominent Key positions were fired on the spot due to their incompetence. Volvo almost committed the the ZF-9 until their engineers quickly backed out and instead went with the Aisin 8 speed.

2021 dec, happy new year, still very interesting. I doubt these 9 ratios have held up well. looks like MANY failure points

Dear Sir, do you have any hardware or firmware to make an update . Our FCA representatives has NO IDEA about upgrading or remaping a transmission. If having it, can you send me a program or something to do that at transmission ECU. Thanks a lot.

Love the video, thank you. I'm trying to find what ATF is used in these boxes is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Would you be able to advise what is best and how much it takes please?

Does a dog clutch perform the same function as a synchro?
@WeberAuto9 жыл бұрын
+Don G. No, the Dog clutch cannot work unless the gears are already synchronized. The transmission controller synchronizes the dog clutch gear teeth by using the other multi-disc clutches in the transaxle. Good question!
@donberg019 жыл бұрын
OK TX for that info, It's just that I have been told by truckers that they can shift a manual WITHOUT using a clutch! I find this hard to believe! Is this magic?
@WeberAuto9 жыл бұрын
Don G. Hi, yes, truckers or anyone else who gets very familiar with the operation of their transmission can shift through most gears without using the clutch; however, it does accelerate the wear of the synchronizers. They try to synchronize the engine RPM (transmission input shaft) and transmission output shaft speed themselves. If you can synchronize those two speeds, then you can move the shift sleeve without releasing the clutch. Thanks for your feedback, you have great questions!
@donberg019 жыл бұрын
Is the reason the drivers can synchronize the output shaft w/the input shaft is due to the very narrow RPM band a slow revving Diesel has? Whereas a high revving auto has a wide RPM band making that trick difficult?
@WeberAuto9 жыл бұрын
Don G. That certainly makes it easier, but it can be done with wider ratio transmissions too.
@bobdoyle24045 жыл бұрын
Forgot the rpm increases followed by the gear change.

Wouldn't the use of dog clutches drastically increase the amount of debris in the fluid and significantly reduce the life of this transmission?
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
Good question. Theoretically no, the job of the transmission controller is to use internal clutch packs as synchronizers. Once the speeds of both sides of the dog clutch are synchronized, the engagement will be quick and easy (no grinding). I hope that helps.
@jasonsong863 жыл бұрын
On Hondas that use this transition (Pilot and Passport), they recommend changing transmission fluid every 45000 miles.

why does this transaxel drop into low gears at high speeds putting the drover in danger.
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
I do not know. I would check with your dealership to make sure the latest transmission control software is installed and that there are no error codes set. Best wishes.

Thanks for your feedback!
@dhy53426 жыл бұрын
You, and ZF, can call this a dog clutch, but it's nothing more than a synchronizer, coupling two gears together. Dog gears are constant mesh gears where one can rotate in one direction but not the other.
@WeberAuto6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. What you are describing sounds like a part called a "Sprag Clutch" or "Roller Clutch" or "Ratcheting Clutch". I have never heard of a dog clutch that acted like a one-way clutch, but I could be mistaken. Thanks again.
