Mr. Kelley, I've been in the automotive field since 08 when I graduated from U.T.I. I worked at a few Chrysler dodge jeep dealers and took their basic courses on hybrid vehicles,much of which I have forgotten over the years working in independent shops,and hybrids just were not as common as they seem to be getting now. Today I had a 2013 Lexus rx400h get assigned to me for a no start complaint. I searched high and low on all data with no success in gaining any info or description and operation on how the system works and keeps the 12v battery charged,as I didn't just wanna throw a battery in it I wanted to verify the system was operating as designed... and I remembered your videos and this is just what I needed. I can't thank you enough for putting this info on KZbin for Free! I would love to be able to come take your classes in person,but its just to far away for me in Ga.

Hi Professor. Thank you so much for invaluable information. I own 2007 Prius and I have been my own mechanic since 2013 when inverter/converter unit went out. It took dealership 3 hours to troubleshoot it, cost me $318, California rates. Again dealership charge me $500 to replace low voltage battery, and finally $500 to replace burnout HID headlights. It was totally ripoff. Well, that was then. I finally figure out how to work on this vehicle now. Your information is helping filling the caps. Thank you once again for your time.

I have a 2016 RAV4 Hybrid and I'm loving these videos. I used to do all my own maintenance when I was younger, but I rarely am able to even "converse" with someone about anything to do with my vehicle and feel out of sort anymore. You're educating me at least to the point where I can tell if a "Certified Technician" at the dealership is bull shitting me or not. I'm feeling better already. Thank you for all you do!! Jim.

Professor Kelly as an owner of a 2008 Prius I really appreciate the information you provide in your videos. I don't understand why the 12v Prius battery is limited to 4.2 amps charging for 10 hours when the DC to DC converter provides 150 amps continuously as required. Many Thanks in Advance! Jeff Erdmann
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto 6 жыл бұрын
The 150 amps maximum is to provide current to the rest of the vehicle as needed, not to charge the battery.
@johnbowman476

I suspect it's more of a paper recommendation to avoid overcharging and overheating the battery damaging it. I've used AGM batteries for over 20 years in hot rods I've built and they can be charged at higher amperages for short periods of time but it is very easy to overcharge and damage them. It's not easy to ascertain the charge state and calculate the charging time on the AGM batteries. Some of the early manufactured actually had a chart which one could carefully conservatively calculate charge time using high amperages for a very fast charge. Although I don't recommend it I have successfully hit both my 2007 and 2008 Prius's with dead low voltage batteries with 20 amps while disconnected for 15 minutes for a fast charge to get going quickly with the high voltage system finishing the charge while driving the car.

I appreciate this series, and I hope I am not wasting anybody's time with a personal comment. In the 1920s my grandfather owned an automotive electrical service business in Wichita Falls, Texas, and also manufactured his own line of automotive batteries. Watching this video, I could not help but wonder what Grandpa might have thought of today's technology and problems, such as not being able to get to a dead battery because it was locked in a trunk that can only be opened electrically. Please keep up the good work--I just bought a 2018 Camry Hybrid and I need all the help I can get in understanding it.

It's worth mentioning that AGM batteries have a security overflow drain pipe. We saw it in the video at 22:25. These batteries are entirely sealed and any generated gases are vented through that tube instead of inside the cabin. This is why AGM batteries are used in vehicles whose 12v battery is in the cabin.

Thanks for the video! How do you think, the charge current of the auxiliary battery more than 4.2 amp after switching on the car? Have you measured it?
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the current goes much higher if necessary, but the battery temperature is monitored by the DC to DC converter and it will turn down the current if the battery starts to get too hot. External chargers do not monitor the battery temperature so the charge current must be limited to prevent overheating the battery.

I use it to maintain my bass boat cranking & trolling motor batteries and I can get almost twice the life with the CTEK. Thanks for another awesome video. Great work!!! Please do not understand what follows as a criticism: I realized that you first plugged the meter's alligators clamps on the low voltage battery points and after that turned the multimeter´s selector to choose its function. I think that with 12 volts, and considering that you use a Fluke Multimeter (very good quality brand!!) there is no risk of damaging it but, anyway, it is always good to have the habit of first choosing the function of the multimeter and then touch the test points. But, again, dont understand my comment as a criticism. I admire your job and your teaching skills.....Thanks.

They may call it auxiliary but it's essential. It makes some sense to me still have a low voltage battery, it allows the DC to DC converter to be sized slightly above the average power consumption. If there wasn't a battery, the DC to DC converter would have to be able to power all the headlights, the rear defroster, the horn, etc at the same time.

Professor, I am receiving many more high voltage module codes that I never received before cleaning bus bars and nuts. Have you heard of this? Perhaps I put it back together incorrectly or the corrosion was actually keeping it going.

Extremely good topic as most people think they can jump start another car with their Hybrid and use any battery charger out there- big trouble!! Thank you professor for the insight into this overlooked but important subject. As with Lead Acid batteries corrosion on the POS terminals is a major problem and, with Hybrid batteries being buried in the back, will AGM batteries have the same issues?

I have not seen issues with batteries inside the vehicle. I think the more friendly environment of the interior helps keep them in good shape. Thanks for the feedback.

You're right. Not sure about the capacity of the hybrid shown here, but other small evs have a charge rate of 10-12 amps. As long as you have some extra time, (and you're not trying to start a diesel), you should still be able to get them going. Even still, if it was an emergency, think of an EV as a mobile power plant. You could still hook up the diesel and leave it on there for an hour (or hours) with no consequence. Just make sure the car is on. I'd probably disconnect before starting the diesel, though.

Professor Kelly what a wealth of information on the inner workings of the Toyota Prius, Unfortunately, I live in Southern California. I would love to take one of your Weber State courses! Congrats on the series of very informative, technical information on a very complex car. I have a question related to a difference between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 12 volt system engine compartment fuse box components. The Gen 2 fuse box had a long fusible link with a clear top on the left side of box. In the Gen 3's, it was replaced with what Toyota calls an "integration relay" at that same location. Specifically, why did Toyota eliminate the fusible link in the Gen 3's and replaced it with an integration relay? Does the integration relay serve the same purpose as the former fusible link? If not, then where is the fusible link (12 volt system) in the Gen 3's? Was there not a need for a fusible link at that location in the Gen 3's? Maybe you can cover this in an upcoming KZbin video? Once again, thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge! Keep them coming!

Do you know if the 400h 2008 is supposed to have the blue inverter relay missing and is that why it will not charge with the engine on in D standing still. I just bought the car at a shop that specialized in Toyota Hybrids. Also i replaced the battery with a new prius battery thinking its better or supossed to have a deep cell agm but its shimmed in with copper strips but just read under the hood something about lead. So is my year a regular battery. Im confused day after i bought it i decided to change the battery and then air conditioning and window stopped working. I learned how to fix the window but i have a couple issues still.

Professor Kelly, Great video. Helped me understand my 2012 Prius battery system. I'm assuming that once the high voltage battery hits its end of life, I'll need to replace it, since the 12V low voltage battery won't be getting charged. Reason I asked, is because someone tried to tell me that when the High Voltage battery dies, I could just run the car with the combustion engine. Did the earlier Prius models, Gen 1 & 2, maybe have an alternator? Just wondering if this was just a rumor someone started, or actually could be true for earlier models? Thank you, Bob

Perfect guides. Thank you. Problem is charging of 12v battery. I have 1st generation, 2003 as your example. Could you please advise common reason of that malfunction. 12v battery unable to charge from IMA. I have two codes: p1600 and p1570. During idle rpm voltage of small batterry is 11V, at time of acceleration growing up to 13,0 V.
