Brief description
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has estimated that the number of adults with diabetes is expected to rise from 425 million in 2017 to 629 million by 2045. Many epidemiological studies have shown that a sedentary lifestyle is responsible for approximately 30% of deaths due to coronary heart disease. A total of 14% of all deaths in the United States have been estimated to be attributable to physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet. One strategy for increasing exercise levels consists of prescribing physical activity.
Although physical activity is a very important element in the prevention and management of patients with type 2 diabetes. Current scientific evidence has revealed the importance of physical activity, exercise and fitness can improve blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, along with additional positive effects on blood lipids, blood pressure, cardiovascular events, mortality, and quality of life.
Intervention trials combining physical activity and weight loss have shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes risk by up to 58% in high-risk populations. Most benefits of physical activity on diabetes management are realized through acute and chronic improvements in insulin action, accomplished with both aerobic and resistance training.
This webinar will provide a brief overview of the concepts of physical activity prescription, the benefits of physical exercise, along with recommendations for varying activities, PA-associated blood glucose management, diabetes prevention, and safe and effective practices for PA with diabetes-related complications.
Webinar participants are encouraged to share their experiences and bring questions on various aspects of surveillance and monitoring of physical activity.
