3:18 I agree! This is the most important point in this video. As an electrical engineer, I try to explain it to non-engineers this way: It is important that the exterior antenna NOT receive any signal from the smaller antenna inside the vehicle (or RV). It is kind of like a microphone and a speaker; get a microphone too close to a speaker and it will make a loud feedback noise. The same exact thing happens with cell-phone boosters, except you can't hear the feedback noise. Every cell booster I have tried is smart enough to decrease the gain (or boost) of the internal antenna if the exterior antenna is receiving signal from it. Some boosters have a light on them that indicates this is happening. (I think this is what happens with cell boosters when people say "This booster is lousy. It doesn't boost the signal very much.") Therefore, the best installation will have the exterior antenna away from the inside antenna as much as practical. Furthermore, a large metal ground plane (like the steel roof of a truck) in between the two antennas is a great installation. Radio signals pass through glass about as well as light does, so don't install the exterior antenna where the primarily "barrier" between the two antennas is a window. In most truck or automobiles installations, the best exterior location is in the middle of the roof (With no sun roof, of course). In an RV? Well, that's a tough one. RVs don't typically have metal roofs. They are usually wood. So, just separate the two antennas as much as practical.

Perfectly said... Pinning this comment 🍻 I totally agree with how your explaining it and to add that it's probably true that ppl send these units back because they are creating feedback loops without understanding how to mitigate it. On the Weboost there is a light that will change color and flash if the install is netting a feedback loop but without knowledge there is no power. Thanks for your wisdom 🤘

I have a crazy thought.... I plan on getting one of these boosters but also buying a faraday bag and then throwing my cell and the internal antenna in there. Boom! In theory should give me max gain and zero feedback. And I plan on using this with android auto with a cable attached before you are wondering how I am going to connect to it through the faraday bag lol. Let me know your thoughts on this plan!

The best way to tell how much signal you're being boosted is to download WeBoost's new app... I found out about it when I was at Overland Expo West this year and spoke with WeBoost reps directly. After you download and open the app goto a low signal area. With the booster off: Goto "Find" and it will show you where the nearest tower is (point your boosters receiver antenna toward that direction for best test results), now goto "signal" and follow the directions... now write that -dB number down. With the booster on: Wait 60 seconds for the booster to boot up and proceed through the same steps. If everything is working correctly your -dB should be a lower number and that means the booster is working. If it's not better, something is happening to cause oscillation (we can work with this, start by looking to see if the lights are all green) or the system just isn't working and you should call customer service. Let me know how it goes: info@wolfpac-outdoors.com

I’ve seen these installed with NMO stub antennas (similar to the little nubs on the top of police cars) and they work exceptionally well as manufacturers manage to pack a ton of gain into a smaller antenna.
@WolfPacOutdoors
@WolfPacOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Very cool! This peaked my curiosity! From prior research and a quick refresher this is what I got for ya... Nearly all NMO antennas are set at 50 ohm gain, including but not limited to all NMO antennas from Wilson, Laird, and a variety of others. I'm not seeing how they would be "better" than an omni directional tall 50 ohm antenna. If, let's say me, had a basic antenna, switching to an omni directional 50 ohm antenna, placing it away from obstructions, and positioning as high as possible are some of the only methods to increase performance. If we want to go all out, wilson also sells the "RV Antenna" which will provide 75 ohm gain but that thing is huge... all this stuff is FCC regulated too, so any modifications to make it more powerful are legally inadvisable. Just my 2 cents.
@SouthernGospelMusic

@@WolfPacOutdoors All that is very true, but when it comes to fleet management smaller is normally better since the taller RV style antenna can break easier. In rural areas (central Texas) I have seen ambulances with the big RV antennas they sell since they need that extra reach. I have a Drive X coming on Saturday, excited to see how it performs in my area.

keep me informed on how well it works, I'd love to know. One of the biggest differences in the Drive Reach vs Drive X is how much power they use. The 12v cigarette lighter cord that comes with it uses a surface mounted pcb fuse. If that fuse blows it is not replaceable and a new cord is ONLY available from WeBoost for $29 or $48 after shipping is added. If you are doing any work on your electrical system disconnect the weboost power cord first or you may blow the very sensitive fuse.
@WolfPacOutdoors

Very helpful tip... once I get my truck back I'll be making an additional video showing how I installed my system, I didn't use the factory 12v cord, instead I hardwired it into my switchpro9100 control box with an "off the shelf" inline fuse which is easily accessible under the hood.
@MrCPPG
@MrCPPG 2 жыл бұрын
@@WolfPacOutdoors well I considered that but I do not know the toletance of the unit to voltage spikes. I mean I could have wired a regular fuse into it but I am assuming it is too sensitive and may ruin the booster unit. So I ordered the regular factory cord. I have both the hard wire and cigarette lighter. The hard wire never worked despite continuity when ohm testing. The cigarette lighter is blew the 15 amp fuse. I put in a 10A and blew instant. I put in a 20A just to test and it is holding up (monitoring the conductors with a FLIR T865) It does help with limited field testing. Haven't yet put it to a real test where signal is 115-120dbm which I occasionally encounter. Not sure why it's blowing fuses. Specs say 4.5A. My interior antenna dangles in front of me in the cabin and the exterior is mounted on a roof rack with a solar panel. I get poor signal inside my cabin unless I hold the phone to the windshield which is not feasible. I have a telescopic mast that takes the antenna up to 12' but not yet tested in that configuration.
@WolfPacOutdoors
@WolfPacOutdoors 2 ай бұрын
For the fuses I believe direct wiring is the best practice for installing, that being said you should also have an on/off switch between the battery and weboost, as to not constantly use battery. I would be curious if you have anything else on your cigarette lighter lines that are drawing unexpected amps causing the overloading. Any haynes manual should tell you exactly what's on each circuit. From my years of direct use I can ensure this system works, and when you pair it with the weboost app it's even better because you can preplan where to park since the app will show you the direction of the nearest cell tower. From my experience the interior transmitter they give you in the box is nearly worthless unless you hold your device against it, and the only way to get around this is to use a desktop transmitter which will give you about a 25' radius of HQ signal boost. That telescoping mast sounds like a good idea!

@@WolfPacOutdoors The cig receptacle I was using is in the rear cabin/trunk and dedicated. I didn't install and on off switch because I run a 100amp PV panel which is fed into a dual input renogy dc to dc charger with the other input my alternator. This charges 2 x 69aH (138aH) X2 Power SLA deep cycle house batteries as well as my starter battery when the vehicle is off and the house batts are in float mode. I have realized 3" make a difference as far as the interior antenna. The phone should near touch the antenna as a foot away is useless. I would be interested in what sku# a desktop antenna is and its wave progation pattern as to not interfere. A better interior antenna may be best when the exterior is elevated. The last two months I have been pleased. But do understand I may need other options that can be deployed when neccesary. I have not yet had the need to use the telescopic mast but know I will find myself one day in an area where it may be needed. What desktop antenna you recommend?
@WolfPacOutdoors
@WolfPacOutdoors 2 ай бұрын
In the video description I have the desktop antenna I use as well as the other parts you'd need to adapt it to that base. For interference I've found that if I place the interior transmitter 6' vertically below the antenna and 9' horizontally away I have no oscillation. Also the roof acts as a ground plane, which really means the thin sheet of metal mostly keeps the signals on their corresponding sides of the roof.

@WolfPacOutdoors
@WolfPacOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Arthur, for the solid green light, that's good and means the system doesn't have any interference or oscillation. As for the signal boosting capacity their are several solutions I can offer from personal experience and the information on pages 8-9 of your installation manual. Signal Solutions: 1. It often takes my unit about 60 seconds to "warm up" and give me a noticed signal increase. 2. The distance you are to a cell tower matters, the further away the less overall boost you will receive, and if your so far away that the cell signal isn't present their won't be any signal for your system to boost. On this page about 1/2 way down you'll see a section called "is this for me" and it will give you an example of what I'm talking about www.weboost.com/products/drive-reach 3. Obstacles matter, when I'm waaaay out in the boonies and I'm tucked into a narrow valley/canyon the wave sent by the cell tower isn't "deep" enough to reach down past the valley walls, so if I really need signal I'll move the truck into a more "clear air" area where line of sight isn't obstructed as much. For more information on cell signal check out www.weboost.com/blog/how-to-test-signal-strength-on-your-phone 4. Lastly, some phones have "hacks" or apps that will tell you your current LIVE signal strength, then you'll be able to SEE the difference instead of just guessing what your signal strength is by looking at bars. Let me know if any of these tips and tricks work for you Arthur 🤜🤛👍

I have it running off my truck battery via my Switch Pro 9100. The SP9100 has the ability to turn the appliance off if they battery reaches a set voltage, so you could just leave it on and eventually it would turn off when the limit level is reached. I prefer it this way because I still want the unit working if I have the camper off. Cool Part; it only draws 5A max and I've left it on for several days with no need to boost the battery to start (I did travel so technically the battery did charge off the alternator). It's been awhile since I've run the numbers but I believe my truck battery is 100ah lead acid battery/5A = 20 hours of available power until battery is at Zero power. Again, I've never experienced an issue with it on the main battery. PS: you could have a spare 12v cord to plug it into a goal zero or camper for extended stays, then plug it back into the hardwired system when on the go... Thanks for checking out the channel!!

I’m traveling in a Ford Transit van. So best roof antenna placement would be in the rear of the vehicle, away from vehicle antenna? Then the indoor antenna should be at least 8’ from the back antenna? Thanks for help!
@WolfPacOutdoors
@WolfPacOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on the transmitter antenna you choose will tell… for this example let’s just say you buy it how I did, then add the RV transmitter instead of the one that comes in that kit. The RV transmitter will give you a 25’ radius of signal, therefore placing it in the cab or rear are both available options. Then your receiver antenna placement would be on the opposite side and opposite end of your (indoor) TX antenna. An initial soft install is recommended because when you turn the system on you’ll see if your getting interference by the light colors on the hub, then you can move either the exterior or interior antenna until the interference is gone. In my truck I have about 6’ of elevation difference and approximately 8’ of distance difference and it works perfectly.

After some research and a phone call to wilson electronics (weboost) I was able to get the full story on this. WeBoost no longer offers the system I purchased when I made this video, and with that they have also rebuilt the new Reach system to be 12v/1.8a. Looking at the raw numbers mine was approximately 24w while the new system is 23w. For what system to choose I'd go with something like this amzn.to/3rS9WCm and then add the RV desktop transmitter. With the RV transmitter the only concern is creating oscillation by having the transmitter too close to the receiver antenna (that's all outlined in the video) and that's easily avoidable. Another option and totally dependent on your setup you should look at the Destination RV Booster amzn.to/47dZtkR , with this it is sold as a stationary only booster but has much greater capabilities than the Reach system. Hope this helps! Austin

Each is suggested for slightly different use, but I’ve also seen more than a few people say there’s a ton of overlap between the various weBoost models. I don’t want to spend more than necessary, obviously, but is there really a big difference btwn the Reach and the pricier models? Reviews are across the spectrum, and I can’t determine whether that’s bc people aren’t setting them up correctly, misunderstand how they work or they aren’t as advertised. What do you suggest?

Here's the quick version for my best suggestion dependent on the information you've provided. Any attempt to infer what others have said or extracted from their experiences with the weboost system I will consider void, only because well that's a lot of suggestive information which could dilute my answer. To construct the "best" system we must create our own or a more inclusive "stationary system" .. let me show/tell you what I would purchase: Best/$$$$ 1. All Inclusive "Destination RV": amzn.to/40jcCox 2. OTR Antenna for mobile use: amzn.to/3lliUFt The Destination RV booster will provide the absolute best signal possible period. It is by far the most powerful booster weboost provides for travel use, it is also the most expensive option. Plus this system provides a large inside transmitting panel designed for multiple users to access simultaneously, although directional in nature. Then if you'd like to use it while rolling I'd recommend pairing it with an OTR antenna which will provide omni directional signal capturing. or Almost the Best/$$$ Created System: 1. Drive Reach RV Booster: amzn.to/3LAEqR3 2. Hardwired Power Supply: www.weboost.com/products/hardwire-power-supply-950079 The Reach RV comes with the Reach Booster which is hands down a great booster, but less powerful than the above. Most of us don't have constant power to wall outlets therefor I would hardwire either systems into constant power. The antenna and mounting are all around good and will provide boosted signal to multiple users within a 25' radius from the transmitting antenna. Again, this system will get you boosted signal, but the "Destination RV" with the telescoping antenna are far superior for signal gathering. Hopefully this helps 👍

I would recommend this amzn.to/3rEwRNw if you're running a 12v power supply. And this amzn.to/3fGGFB5 if you're planning to have a constant 120v power supply. They are both equal options and both ideal for your configuration 👍

Great video and info! I'm about to install a Drive Reach OTR in my truck and I got the RV inside antenna to try out as well. Do you have any updates after a year? Did you use the cigarette plug or have you wired it directly to a 12V source?

Updates: works as advertised. Wish it was StarLink tho 🤣 I’m not a fan of being stranded in the middle of Death Valley with no service (which happened and I show in EP 4 Part 2 of the PCOR Series). I have the WeBoost hardwired to my Switch-Pros 9100, and on that I wish I would have had the option for a 12 switch system.

You didn’t think the desktop transmitter was a good hack? Man that one has been gold for me, now I can be in the camper or by the fire and have boosted signal 🤘

@@WolfPacOutdoors well if someone try's putting the desktop transmitter in a car, your more than likely going to have issues, the biggest problem is 'oscillation' which kills the actual quality of your signal. Its not a good idea.

I like how you phrase this "more than likely", we could say that about so many things in life but until you reach out and try it yourself... well, you'll probably stay wondering. The distance between my receiver and transmitter isn't but 8' apart horizontally and 4' vertically, and I can make the system oscillate by moving them closer together. The most helpful portion to this equation is the metal roof barrier between the two as it provides a ground plane, moderately blocking the systems from interfering with each other.

Thank you for making this video. Question: what material is your external antenna made off? It looks like rubber. The reason I am asking is that I just purchased the new WeBoost Overland for my jeep, and the external antenna did not even survive the install. It is made out of brittle plastic, and cracked while installing. I contacted WeBoost and they are sending me a new antenna, but I am afraid it will have the same issue. I recorded a quick vid (super amateur, but conveys the point) describing the problem. You can see it here if interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3mue3djnrKUopY

the shell of the antenna is made from a poly plastic or something, but i've wacked the sh*t out of it while off roading and haven't been able to break it. I've never heard of a WeBoost Overland, sounds like a hoax that they'd make something super specific like that... im sure they also charge 40$ extra dollars because it says Overland lol🤣

@@WolfPacOutdoors yeah, so they send me a replacement, and this one did not even survive a 3 mile drive through town. I am calling them tomorrow... again. They claim that they have sold many of them, that they are design for rough road... But that plastic is brittle. And yes, it is about $560, but comes with a foldable mount.

@@WolfPacOutdoors So yeah, I stress tested the OTR antenna. It is definitely different from Overland antenna--they must have changed suppliers or something. I also got the Clamp you recommended. Def will be using that instead of the plastic holder.. Thank you for making that vid.
