Phones tend to stay locked onto towers they're getting service from. So when driving long distances your phone will try to stay with that same antenna from 75+mi away.. the airplane mode basically resets the phones antenna lock (for lack of better terminology) and makes it reconnect to a new (closer) antenna

Awesome, I bought the larger antenna as well. Works great and I mounted mine no higher than topper height. I used a bed-mounted antenna bracket from Caliraised. @@xdedox532 I can't post a picture to the comment section but I ran the internal antenna to the back of the console at the very bottom and used 3M heavy duty velcro to mount it horizontal. I have done that in teo vehicles and it seems to be a good location without peoples feet getting all over it. It is also a central location for anyone sitting in the vehicle using their phone. Hope this helps. Also, thanks for commenting and if you haven't subscribed, please do I will be posting a video soon of the Tundra Weboost install.

Thanks for the great review. I thought I’d chime in and help answer why it gets signal after placing it in airplane mode. When you’re locked onto a cell site, that cell site has a neighbor list. Your phone will only handover to a known neighbor. When you put it in airplane mode, the neighbor list is ignored and it scans for towers. Tip: If you could mount the antenna completely vertical, you’ll increase signal level a few dB. That will help.
@stevensly267
@stevensly267 2 жыл бұрын
Good video. You are correct on all points. Often the proximity is misunderstood. Users need to realize in a vehicle there is not a lot of space to separate the indoor and outdoor antenna. As you move your phone away form the indoor antenna the phone is adjusting power levels higher automatically. As you move it around the vehicle it can actually oscillate with the outdoor antenna causing the booster to temp dial back its output power or stop boosting all together. Many people do not know enough about how phones and the principals of radio transmissions operate - Thus boosters are given negative feedback. If used and installed correctly, they are a real lifesaver. Also, don't expect the world from them. Often, data speeds from a booster will not be high because the phone will likely not be able to "Hear / use the diversity signal" from the LTE transmission - making you will have basic LTE capabilities likely not "LTE+ capabilities" Also there is no benefit using in urban environments in a vehicle where signal doesn't need to be boosted. I have mine on a remote controlled switch in the car and only turn it on when out of the city, where I know the signal is weak.

Hey Nathan, I stumbled on to your channel and watched most of the videos. Thumbs up for the content. On the note about placement of the internal antenna, you pointing out how close it has to be made me wonder what it says in the official installation documentation about this. The only thing that I found, was that the it is recommended to increase the distance between the internal and external antennae to reduce the feedback that would be generated by the boost function. I happened to notice that you mounted your external antenna right above your driver door. In one of the clips, you make a point to open the door and move your cell device right out. I have a feeling that the fact that you opened the door and reduced the amount of blocking interference between the two antenna is what actually killed your apparent coverage. Now I know this video is old and you may not be replying or reading the comments, if you do, it would be great if you could test the above idea by relocating your external antenna to the rear of your truck and seeing if it improves your experience with the WeBoost. Regards,

Looking at the number of bars isn't the best way to judge how the booster is working. Better to look at the signal strength in dBm and ASU. Regardless of both, voice and data actually working is the acid test. Also, the antenna should be mounted vertical for best performance (due to signal polarity). Last but not least, no matter how much signal you have to and from the tower, if you're outside the hard distance limit your connection will be refused. This is a VERY overlooked limitation with boosters.
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on all points. I actually tested video at most spots as well as went into the phone and checked signal strength. Video was the key metric for me as it is a needed medium for work. Also agree that it wont work everywhere... I always raft parts of the Lochsa that are 30 - 60 Miles from a cell tower... there is no hope for that spot. Thanks for the advice on the antenna mounting... I actually tested it both ways and never noticed a difference but I am sure your right in extreme scenarios.

This is the best review I've seen on this product so far. Thanks for making this. I really don't like how weak the internal antenna is. That's super weird. You'd think they'd make it strong enough to cover at least the cab of a truck.
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
With the internal antenna I believe WeBoost is required to make it weak because of the booster. I know that is weird sounding but I believe it is an FCC thing for Safety... you don't want a signal that strong broadcasting widely.

If/When you are working on the road or being more full-time on the road, getting a Multi-carrier router is often the most robust option. It can grab whatever network is strongest and you can even feed a weBoost into it for the absolute best coverage without using a yagi antenna designed for remote signals.
@UTADV
@UTADV Жыл бұрын
Great review. Might I add a couple of notes? WeBoost provided their 1.0 version for my rig years ago, so you know my bias. I'm currently running their Drive X OTR (before the Overland product was released) that I bought on my own almost two years ago. One installation quirk that is constantly overlooked is the distance between the mast antenna and the interior antenna. If these two points are too close together they create a feedback loop that will obstruct signal quality. Mounting the mast toward the rear of the cab, or as with my SUV above the d-pillar, eliminates the loop and provides the full signal for which this was engineered. Note 2; the user's cell plan will also determine the system's efficacy, depending on which priority their plan has in tower access. PS, the mast spring that came with my kit is not stainless and after a year is rusting. Thanks for your good work.

Thanks for a great, thorough, direct review. I do find it strange that the phone literally has to be within mere inches of the internal antenna, because Wilson themselves recommend affixing the internal antenna either on the side of the front seat or under the dashboard, where obviously it's going to be 2-3 feet from your phone anyway. That might explain the negative reviews - people followed their lead, but it still wasn't enough.

Yes, IIRC it was Nokia that came out (1980s?) with the revolutionary battery saving concept that instead or running at max power all the time, a cell phone would throttle back the power when it could not reach a tower. Every company may have different timing & power schemes to do this "best".

RF engineer here. Antennas have a radiation pattern. This particular one is an omnidirectional (think a donut one a table with the antenna being in the hole of the donut). When you mount the antenna at a 45 degree angle as you have done you are pointing half of your antennas rx/tx capability pointing to the sky and the other into the dirt. Have you ever seen a telecom/ cellphone tower with antennas mounted at a 45deg angle? no. Straight up and down is what you are looking for.

Hi, Nathan. Great review. I’m guessing that that red heat sink unit is a linear amplifier and if I’m not mistaken, FCC regulates it not to exceed 3 Watts. I’ll go watch another video and see if they list what comes with this system after opening the box. And thank you for not doing a box opening. Anyone can open the box. Hilarious. Also, I discovered that “resetting“ by going to airplane mode, and then switching the phone back on really works. My theory is that the phone grabs a cell tower and holds onto it even when it should switch to the next one, but it doesn’t always do it. By switching off the phone to airplane mode and then turning it back on, it finds the closest cell tower. I’m a licensed ham and this is my best guess. I’ve taught several people this trick and they really like it.

Nice overview. One comment on safety. I don’t think a cell phone booster should be viewed as a safety device just because of its limitations. When I go to remote places, I bring a Garmin InReach, which is a two way satellite communication device. It works virtually everywhere on the planet, as long as you can see the sky. I’m installing my WeBoost device on my 4runner today. My biggest concern is how to get the antenna cable from the outside to the inside of the truck without any possible leaks or ugly pass through. How did you do it on your truck?

You can get a better signal if you mount the antenna vertically rather than at an angle like you have it

Have you tried a MIMO antenna? Great tip on the airplane mode, I'll have to remember that. I was turning my phone off and back on trying to get a signal, so that should save some time on reboots.

You are almost correct..... First, the phone cannot be used outside the vehicle. There has to be that metal roof separating the external and internal antenna or osolation occurs. (The phone trying to recieve signal directly from the tower and the boosters re-broadcasted signal at the same time). Secondly, it clearly states in the directions 18 to 36 inches from the internal antenna as ideal distance. The bars you get when you're within an inch of the antenna is not usable signal, simply a feedback loop misinterpreted by the phone. And finally, you are not getting the full advantage of the high gain, 360 degree antenna by having it mounted on an angle like you have it. Should the cell tower you're closest to be behind you the signal would literally bypass the antenna. Overall decent review, but'cha gotta do a bit more research.

I think they discontinued that antenna. Can't find it anywhere. How terrible is that tiny antenna that comes with it? You said it's not as good but I wonder if it's worth having without the big barrel antenna. Thanks for the great review!

Do you HAVE to have a cell signal in order for it to work? If you have NO Bars, there must be weak signals around? Is there a magnetic set up for taller antenna? Everyone recommends bigger antennas for remote area..I just don’t have racks and don’t want to drill to hook up.

Also, if you're relying on a booster for safety, you're doing it wrong. If that's a critical factor get a PLB, InReach, Spot or satphone.

Already have an InReach... but if there is a disaster on the river I will take a cell connection to the local police over anything it provides.

That airplane mode trick also works for Samsung. I happen to do that from time to time when 5g signal is weak and speeds are slow, 4glte seems to have better speeds if you're not close enough to a 5g tower.

Great video! Was just in the process of buying this. Your link looks to have the smaller antenna or at least the pic on the box shows the smaller antenna. What am I missing?

Weboost either discontinued the Drive Reach package that came with the big antenna or it was a victim of COVID backorder issues... haven't been able to find it in stock when this video was posted. So I had to buy the Drive Reach and then the better antenna separately. I have included links for both in the video description. They do have the older 4g-X packaged with the bigger antenna... but that is a much weaker booster so don't get that. Hopefully they bring it back but in the mean time you can buy them separately. Hope that helps.

Pro tip: the larger drum antenna will preform even better if it is mounted verticle due to the type of gain that antenna has mounting it at a 45 is literally shooting some of your signal into the ground

Yup... Thanks. I am moving it to the back rack on the rear of the vehicle whenever my rack is done being on back order. I probably should have called this out in the video. I will tell you one thing... it does work great in brush :)

I’m confused - isn’t the smaller antenna an “internal” antenna. The larger for gathering and sending data to tower the smaller for communication with your phone?
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 3 жыл бұрын
There is a small internal antenna... you will see it on my dash in the video. Then there is a small external Magnetic antenna that comes with the Drive reach... I upgraded that one to the OTR antenna as it provides much better boost. In the description I have links for both items... but here they are for reference - WeBoost Drive Reach Cell Signal Booster - amzn.to/3cz1R9M Wilson Electronics OTR enhanced Cell Booster Antenna - amzn.to/3j6KFer

Great video!! How far was your placement of the internal antenna from the outside antenna? Also, are you able to get a signal outside your truck from Weboost, or do you have to be close to the internal antenna for all the boosted benefits?

If your phone needs to within 2 inches from the antenna you might as well buy the "Drive sleek" and save 300 bucks (hopefully antenna options). At least you can use your phone as long as it's still in the cradle and a very long cable...maybe???
