Hey everybody, this is Russ from Retro Game Corps. I didn't think I needed to say this, but I got a few questions about it. There was zero money exchanged in the creation of this video. The developers reached out to ask for help with testing and promotion, and I immediately saw how great the platform was, and decided to make a dedicated video on it. WebRcade is 100% free, it's a hobby project that the developers decided to share with the world. There's no catch! If I was ever paid for a video I would most definitely say so, although I don't have plans for that at all. The whole point of this channel is to share my love of retro gaming with others, and webRcade is a perfect example of that. Edit to add a couple quick tips: - if using an iPhone, make sure it's not on silent mode (that little switch on the side), and tap the screen once when the game starts so that you can get sound - on Xbox, press L2 + L3 to bring up the webRcade menu

This is amazing and very clever in how it works. The first thing it brings to my mind is whether or not I could edit the json to use urls that are local to my devices storage (iOS). If that were done and webrcade added a service worker js to their app so that it ran offline that would enable full offline play which is handy when flying.

YES. This is already a very cool thing, but cloud saves would be the best thing they could add. I'd want that even more than more powerful systems. Honestly, keeping it 16-bit and below would make it more portable from system to system. Not sure every single thing with a browser has the power to play N64, but if we're talking 16-bit and below, the whole "you can run it on a potato" cliche works out very well. Add cloud saves to that, and suddenly this actually has something over other solutions.

So a dad like me could be working on an SNES RPG on the tv, and when my wife or kids need the tv I can just switch to my iPhone or whatever device I want and pick up where I saved. It looks neat, I might give it a try. I've been playing around with a raspberry pi zero 2 w and I'm curious if this would work. I guess it depends on how heavy the load is on resources and compatibility with the browsers offered on the Pi. If they add a lot of features to this, it could become the best way to have access to your game library. I also could imagine the possibility of a retro handheld device that is designed to access this site. Maybe you could keep a minimum amount of roms on your device and access the rest through this service when you have an internet connection. It definitely makes emulation on a phone more appealing because you could build a large library without having to store it on your phone's storage.

Hey Russ! When/if they implement cloud saves, could you test this from a browser on, say, a Retroid Pocket 2+ and other handhelds that might have a browser? I know it sounds weird to use something like this on an actual emulation device, and I'm not talking about using it for everything on the system, but the idea of stopping on Xbox and picking up on a dedicated handheld is interesting. I'm thinking a hurdle might be text size and interface layout, but if it worked.. Also, PS Vita browser might be a great solution for folks that don't want to mod their firmware. I think we're just scratching the surface of what it potentially means to be able to do all this from a browser. So yeah, maybe a future video idea would be testing this in uncommon browsers and doing a little roundup of the various experiences.

Forgive my noobness here but I have a couple of questions. 1) Does this use your phones/pc's specs like your video about setting up a USB Stick as a emulation station? Or does the browser do all of the heavy lifting? 2) Have you noticed any significant input lag? I am a huge fan of side scrollers and have had issues with dying in Mario games due to running off cliffs because it didn't jump. (That was several years ago though, using a networked HDD.) 3) If you use drop box, can the games save in the roms folder located in drop box so you have pseudo cloud saves? If that makes any sense. Or are the games saved on the domains end? I think this could be a fantastic method of play for me. I do just about all of my digital entertainment at my desk. I watch movies or youtube videos on my 2nd monitor. Being able to play on my other monitor or on my landscaped ipad using my xbox controller sounds amazing!

This looks amazing. But i have still so many questions: 1. Where are all the files saved? (I.e. save files) You mention that consistent save states are in the works, does the mean the save files are saved in temp/cache of the host device? Meaning I cant continue the same progress on my PC I had on my phone? 2. How does the emulation work? Where does it happen, that all my game files are suddenly being run on my device? Does webRcade have the console cores somehow embedded in the browser? Does the website host the emulation? But then it must just be streaming the game, and our devices are just "client" devices rather than hosts. 3. What about input delay? (Piggybacking on 2. question) 4. Multiplayer is probably a long way around but related to that, what is the behaviour for multiple people using the same feed at the same time? Are multiple people allowed/able to access that feed and even play at the same time? (Same console/game/on the same feed)
@RetroGameCorps2 жыл бұрын
Hi, let's see if I can answer all these questions :) 1. the games are saved in the IndexDB within the browser, right now cross-play or cloud saves aren't available but it's something they are interested in developing. 2. the emulation is happening within their backend in the browser, using emulation cores. 3. Input delay is nonexistent in my testing, the rom is fully loaded in the browser so it's not streaming or anything. 4. Multiplayer may be an option in the future. As far as I know multiple people can access the same feed at the same time. If you have any further questions I encourage you to check out their discord server where you can ask them directly!

Awesome! So if I have a iPhone 13 max, based on what you said in the video, will I need some kind of 3-D printed adapter for it to work in the backbone controller?

Yes

Yes, but the adapter ships free with the BackBone One now with every purchase. I have a link in the video description :)

Wow this is such a cool option! Awesome content as always, Russ! Do you happen to know if I could get this running on a Chromecast w/ Google TV? This would be a much easier way to play games on my other TV lol.

I haven’t tried it but my first guess is that it should work fine. Please let me know how it goes!

Use a chrome browser then cast it to the tv?
@magical_unicorie2 жыл бұрын
@@RetroGameCorpsCan't seem to get it to work well on the Chromecast unfortunately. It played too jittery with an installed browser and trying to cast my phone screen to it was wayyy too laggy. Still, I'm excited to have this option for my phone and my tablet. Edit: Also tried it from the PS4 browser and it wouldn't even load up a game. Waah. It would be cool if they could add support for Playstation in the future.

👍 Well that will help allot. Thx! Now i wish that they will implement a touchscreen option for easy mobile usage like Diablo Web.

If you run a game on an emulator once, then you can put your phone on flight mode and continue to use it. Seems it caches the emulator and ROM. Good little hack if you’re travelling and don’t have cell/wifi

Brilliant!! Are there Plans for other Emulators ? MAME, C64, Amiga, Dreamcast, Saturn and so on ?!
@RetroGameCorps2 жыл бұрын
They do want to roll out other systems soon. I think they're going to start with PC Engine and go from there.
@AndyTanguay2 жыл бұрын
I second this. MAME at least would be wonderful.

Absolutely great guide, as usual! I'm wondering, as I was thinking about diving into this, is how different this is to Plex Arcade? Have you used this? Trying to discern if I should forget Plex Arcade and go with this instead?
