I think it's, somewhat ironically, because the Drumkit is such a new instrument. Guitarists and Bassists and keyboardists and pianists etc. expect their instrument to evolve, but the drumkit came into being as a jazz instrument, with mass communication to keep it uniform. everyone used the same ideas to learn and the same rudiments from the same books and had the same heroes and so on, so change is much more unknown and frowned upon. Just speculation though.

Well, yeah. I think maybe that Dave Weckl has finally surpassed Steve Gadd, to be honest with you. I had the distinct pleasure of witnessing Dave Weckl play with Chris Minh Doky less than 2 years ago in Denmark, on their Chris Minh Doky Tour, and he was ridiculously good.

Yes, I agree with the evolvement of Jazz from the years you stated, but again since the advent of Rock n Roll then the evolvement of that genre, ie, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Funk, and general Rock itself the drum kit as adapted very much for these styles to be played more easier, also the the point I made seems to have been lost, thinking Jazz is the only REAL music in the world and to play better player than any of the above styles I mentioned is very narrow minded.

Yes Jazz as mainly, as you say a "improv" style of music, which is great in the creative sense, but being this just does not make it better or harder to play than other forms, many other drummers can ad-lib or expand on there playing when needed not just jazzers, this again highlighting that Jazz isn't the pinnacle of music, Groove is a beat/rhythm that's played in the pocket and definitely not free flowing Jazz improv style.

"W(r)eck-Y'all" Weckl can play any style of music convincingly, including rock or metal, probably even better than some of the guys known for doing it; but "live" he just doesn't hit as hard (or LOOK like he is ;) , however, on a properly bombastically mixed rock recording you'd find he'd be just as lethal on it as anyone else... or perhaps, more. I'd have him on a metal session in a nano-second. Like Colaiuta, hes a 1,2, to 3 take wonder, with stellar meter. 8]

Every style of music can be done good.I am not for those "jazz elitists" and all good musicians are not "jazz elitists".The people with the attitude "What i like is the best and all other is crap" are childish.I think all the greats that happen to play jazz are not just jazz musicians but overall musicians.

Yes, very true, I'm into soul/funk, but don't really like to pigeon hole myself I like & play many styles of music, Jazz guys need to see that Jazz isn't the only form that requires a good knowledge of the drums or any harder to play that genre, in others words Stop Being Jazz Snobs.
@anisimful

Sorry, but its true. I am also listening to rock pop and so on, but to be a very good drummer with good skills, you need to play Jazz. He is not saying that anything other than Jazz is not music.
@RacManRhythm
@RacManRhythm 12 жыл бұрын
I take on board your opinion but, it's when "Real" music is mentioned, like saying, "look there's no other that's real music besides Jazz", which is wrong, sure Jazz drummers are amazing players but a Rock, Funk or Soul drummer can just have the same skills as drummer, its a blend of bit of this and bit of that not pigeon holing yourself to one style of playing or disregarding anything other than Jazz not difficult to play.
@RacManRhythm
@RacManRhythm 12 жыл бұрын
Again, this is totally highlighting Jazz to be a superior form of music, yes I know it takes a good technique to play well but its not the only form of music that requires some form of technique to your playing, take for instance soul or its off shoot funk, drummers take forms jazz drumming into these two forms along with bits of latin, rock etc...... to form those genres therefore Jazz isn't the only REAL music in the world, to think it is to be musically inept, and elitist.

I love Weckl man my favorite hands down,but i hate the tom thing he does when he bends the sound of the tom by holding a stick on it.I don't know why,just bothers the hell out of me.
@RacManRhythm
@RacManRhythm 12 жыл бұрын
There are many genres besides that, ie rock & roll, that requires just the back beat on 2 & 4 scenario, Jazz drumming isn't the only playing of the drum-kit that requires some good skill/talent to play or perform take for instance Latin, Reggae, Funk (yes I know is born from Jazz), etc...... therefore Jazz is not the ultimate form of drumming, besides I wouldn't say Jazz is fluid, yes its a UN-predictable form of music so it can't be fluid, but that's just my opinion.

I can play Jazz, I've played in a few big-bands too, but I'd have to disagree, I really hate jazz snobs, not saying you one, yes jazz has a lot of technique for all musicians but it's not the be all & end all of good music, many players think to play jazz is the highest form of music thus being a better musician but this isn't always the case, there many good, Rock, Funk & RnB drummers out there that don't equate jazz as a higher medium of music.
@RacManRhythm
@RacManRhythm 12 жыл бұрын
In my playing I incorporate many styles of music, Rock, Funk, Reggae, Latin & Soul, and not to mention Jazz itself, but to highlight Jazz in the way it has here is very narrow minded indeed, Weckl is one of my fave drummers but his comment is quite ignorant, and quite snobbish towards other styles that can be just as demanding to play, many drummers once they get to a certain level this thinking Jazz is the holy grail, its quite funny but also nauseating.

Because much business-produced pablum-puke ad nauseam pop/rock music is usually "esteemed" quite basic. But i put forth, if one were to listen to a lot of pop / rock (esp in the 80's, if you can stomach some of the pretentious chord structure, sounds, & arrangement ;p), one might just find there's more going on than "meets the ear" (pop: drumming/musical subtlety, say on HH or Rd, ghosting, set-up fills within context of tune & genre, etc; & rock: power, drive, chops, intensity, etc)
@RacManRhythm
@RacManRhythm 12 жыл бұрын
I've seen and heard so many drummers say, "I'm a Jazz drummer now" or "I'm studying Jazz now", like there now a better player than you and there subtlety letting you know, I know all drummers are not like that, but its that I'm a better drummer, look down there nose approach I hate, I've also seen Rock, Soul, Latin and Funk drummers basically wipe the floor with Jazzers on technique and feel, there's too many Jazz snobs in the music world
@ballistix01

OMG the Jazz Snob Elite Stormtrooper Police are here /:-| . But, one simple question to you non-jazzer's... can you play it properly? ;p x] (Takes YEARS of listening, playing, practicing). However, so do most other styles.* ( * Except "GARAGE BAND" style, not the vid game, but literally. You all know: the ol' obligatory pretentious, ubiquitous, tippety-tappy "Boom-boom-TAP, da-Boo-kee-Boom-TAP" etc ad nauseam.) ;p

Again, wrong. To be a very good drummer with good skills, you need to be a very good drummers with good skills. It doesn't matter what style you play. Jazz isn't hard to play. It's basic swing. Likewise, rock isn't hard to play. It's just keeping a backbeat. Now, being a GOOD player in those genres is difficult. Understanding how to complement a style of music takes years and years of experience.
