Hands down, my favorite drummer of all time. Saw him perform in the early 90s in Chick Corea's Elektric and Acoustic band. Mind blowing. Impeccable technique and fluidity.

After all these years and when you think he’s said it all he still pulls performances like this out of the bag. Who follows guys like Dave? Plenty of technicians now playing insanely fast but without this level of taste, thoughtfulness and musicality. You’re still the man Dave!

20 years ago, he is known as the God of Drums... today he still is. Let's be honest, this insane level of complexity, groove, precision, depth, feel, rhythmic expression & musicality is very hard to surpass. Many legendary drummers abound in my lifetime (My fave: Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, Virgil Donati, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith, John Robinson) ... & many others will aspire to be like him, but there'll only be one true Dave Weckl, the Maestro. Hopefully he has groomed a protege worthy enough to carry on his legacy & craft...
@drewper737 жыл бұрын
He wasn't always considered a musical drummer. To the contrary, after the first two or three albums with Chick Corea Elektric Band, there were lots of comments about his lack of feel, that he was too machine-like, and nothing but a bag of tricks. Believe me, I didn't wanna hear people saying that. After discovering the debut album from Chick Corea Elektric Band when I was in the 10th grade, I bought every album of theirs (five total) until the lineup changed. I was also a huge fan of Weckl's first solo album, Masterplan. But considering that I was still in high school until 1991, it all sounded good to me. I didn't have a lot to compare it to as far as fusion and jazz drumming was concerned. I was heavy into Rush, Yes, The Police, Led Zeppelin, and other bands like that. Eventually, Weckl turned a corner and his playing began to have more feel. Thank God he was around back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's. I was a huge fan no matter what his critics said. He's even better today. I once read that he used to practice 16 hours a day. I remember thinking, "No wonder he's such a badass!"

David Chan it is not enjoyable
@simonperry85697 жыл бұрын
At some point in the 1990s Weckl went for lessons with Freddie Gruber and changed his whole approach to playing. Bear in mind this is a guy who was already regarded as a drumming deity, but wanted to get even better -- like if Tiger Woods had deconstructed his swing at the peak of his powers. Anyway, the end result was that Weckl's musicality and feel improved dramatically and he reached an even higher level. I believe the rethink was partly due to the criticism of him playing robotically, as you mentioned in your post.
@davidchan22127 жыл бұрын
No worries e d, music is subjective. But I do wonder from what standpoint do you keep judging Dave as the least enjoyable drummer? Perhaps you are a way more accomplished drummer than he is.... I do hope you are not criticizing for the sake of criticism. We all have our individual taste. Just relish the flavor if it suits you! Cheers!
@davidchan22127 жыл бұрын
Agreed drewper73, looking back when he did that legendary trio performance with the great Steve Gadd & Vinnie Colaiuta at the Buddy Rich Tribute, his playing felt too technical and not enough groove, unlike Steve & Vinnie who had way more feel & depth with less ghost notes. But over the years, he definitely jump leap & bounds , maturing his craft like fine vintage wine. His drive & discipline is solid rock, to develop to such level where such COMPLEXITY & GROOVE co-exists in harmony.... pure genius. Can't help but wonder what MK Speed is his brain travelling at... Btw, Masterplan was one of my fav album of his, in his big breakthrough.

A drummer as talented as Dave Weckl makes any drums or cymbals sound great. It's not the things he's hitting that make the difference, it's the person doing the hitting that matters most.
@dxb80866 жыл бұрын
_"It's not the things he's hitting that make the difference, it's the person doing the hitting that matters most."_ Certainly it is both. Any peace sounds better with good equipment. None of you think that snare is too ringy? That was the first thing I noticed. Then I scrolled through the comments and everybody seems to love the snare sound. I've seen videos where Weckl uses a snare muffler that's unlike any other snare muffler I've ever seen. I wonder why he chose not to use it for this video. I'm sure you Weckl fans will agree that he doesn't usually let his snare drum ring out so much. It's not as bad when he plays several notes on the snare, because each consecutive stroke acts as a muffler. Don't get me wrong. I've been a Weckl fan since 1988, when I went out and purchased the first Chick Corea Elektric Band recording on cassette. Great performance here, thanks for posting.
