The one time I did a mystery box, it was a "one pound" box from Michaels. I expected something similar to this--multiple different textures, weights, colors. Nope. I got a singular, unlabeled, one pound ball of taupe. It was bigger than my head. Now it's being made into Legend of Zelda gauntlets.

I think Lion Brand sells mystery boxes based on weight? If you like their yarns, that could be a good choice.

I especially love that you normally just get single skeins in the mystery bags. Its about trying new things! And what good does it do to get 2, 3 or more skeins of one yarn when you end up not liking that yarn? Its like a mixed box of chocolates, just to taste a bit. I always start whatever project i think the yarn is good for. No matter how small or big the project is, because if i like the yarn while working with it i simply order more of what i need. And there are tins of things you can do with a single skein, even 180yards is enough for a cowl or baby items, or armwarmer, scrunchies, headbands, toys, things like boot cuffs and so on and on. Its all about getting creative. :)

That pea green is my fav!!!!! I'm a Newbie in crocheting or knitting thanks to a recent liver transplant and kidney transplant. That green is the ribbon reminder color for transplant patients! I literally bought my first yarn last week!!! I've made my momma 2 scarves! Shes 84 in SC........I'm in Dallas and not allowed to travel just yet so a goodie box is on the way next week. Chroma twist makes really nice hats, I've used a few different colorways and try to pick up more every time it's on sale. The hats are just super soft and the color change on some are gorgeous. The pixie has a nice purples, blues and pinks blend you might enjoy

I love a good mystery and sometimes even when you see the product on line, the colour is not what you expect. My solution is to over dye it. I made a cardi in a light demin yarn but it made me look so washed out. Over dyed it in navy and voila, a much loved item.

Chroma is actually awful for socks. The single ply means that they pill like no one's business. Chroma Twist is oddly emotional for me. I got some in a mystery pack way back when and my late cat Mikko kept stealing it to neatly unwind and lay on, so I made him a little blanket in it. He was cremated with it.

Best mystery box that is my favorite is the ones from Mary maxim, you get variety, and multiple skeins of one kind of yarn min three skeins. And they give you a variety of yarn plus the box you get is a substantial size box so you feel like it is worth your $$.

When you discovered you had three coordinated Swish bulky....SQUIRREL!! LOL! I like mystery bags but I think I'll stick with Lion Brand. They do 3 skeins of 3 different yarns so you can actually do something with them. They may not be what you'd choose but at least it's not one skein of "what do I do with this?" Happy Weekend, Toni!

Ooooh, I disagree about Chroma for socks. My daughter and I both knot socks with it once. The one ply won’t stand up to sock wear. However, we also used it to make a crocheted shawl! Now, there’s the place where Chroma shines.

To me, both bags are outrageously priced for the amount of yarn. I got 3 lbs of yarn from Herschnerrs for only $21. AND you can get TONS of cheaply priced, but fancy yarn from ICE Yarns.

I got the same wool mystery box as you down to the colors. The only exception is that my Stroll Tweed is a brown. Otherwise, same yarns, same colors. I really enjoyed it though. I already knit the Tuff Puff up into a headband and the Chroma Twist and Swish Bulky in to a colorwork hat.

I got a free mystery bag during the summer sale and I received pretty much all the same yarns in the first bag in the same colorways with the exception of chartreuse for the tuff puff. I made trivets with the tuff puff and am currently doing a moss stitch scarf with the lapis. I wish I had noticed they were on sale when I did up an order of bare the other day. The other plus about this company: they are great about replacing hanks that got lost because of the shipping company's error, and I love that a real person answers the phone.

I personally love mystery boxes/bags. Mainly because it allows me to try new yarns, or brands. Plus it’s just so much fun to get surprises. I love guessing to see what I’ll get. Plus it adds to my stash, and let’s me put things together that I have. For me it’s like Christmas when I get mystery boxes. LOL It’s not for everyone, but you’ve given me another company to check out for mystery boxes and other yarns to buy from.

I got a free mystery bag of theirs in a recent sale and was really happy with it, I love trying new yarns from KnitPicks / Wecrochet and have two little kids so the single skeins aren’t a bother. I got the wool bag and have already used two skeins as contrast in projects. And fun to pick a color I wouldn’t try, sometimes my yarn stash gets a little samey colored! And you can wear any color on your feet, right?!

I got one of the Lion Brand mystery boxes and what you got seems a lot better than that. The listing said it would be nine random skeins, and i figured with nine chances even if there were some duds I was bound to get some winners. As it turned out, though, the description was misleading. What I actually got was three sets of three skeins each. All three are from their cheapest worsted acrylic lines - the ones that come in a million solid colors. I got two slightly different but equally ugly shades of beige, and a bubblegum pink. Not in a million years will I ever use a single inch of any of these yarns and now I don't know what to do with them.

Thanks for going over these. I like the ones that you got but I am not sure if I would go out and buy them though. I am gun shy after buying a couple from Lions Brand. I was so disappointed with the Santa bag and a mystery box. Felt like they were rejects and that was why they were in the mystery shipments. Maybe that is what they are supposed to be.

Dang, at the time of this comment the only mystery bag available is cotton. Thank you for this! I am new to We Crochet yarns and was on the fence about ordering one of these bags, so this was super helpful. I've really been wanting to expand my yarn game but I am one of those people who must go down the yarn aisle and feel all the yarn to get a sense of what to make with it or to avoid it lol. @@elisah7544 The Prym ergonomics are my favorite hooks. BUT since they are plastic they might not work well with your synthetic yarns. However, I have not encountered any problems with wool blends, and certain acrylics are smooth enough to work. I mostly use my hooks for my cotton yarns, but I also have some wool / wool+something yarns, and as I said: FAVORITE. Highly recommended. I hold my hook like a knife, if that helps with your decision. My index finger naturally creeps to the top of the hook, and these Pryms are perfect for that. Their wide part rests on the ball of my hand (below the pinky finger) and my entire hand just feels so relaxed while working. I got both boxes, so 60+ € for 10 hooks. They‘ve paid me back in comfort. 😌

I usually only do mystery bags if they are by weight. I use fingering thru DK 95% of the time so aran, bulky and super bulky often sit in my stash for years even if I loved the way they look and feel.
