I called some community senior centers in town and asked if they had ladies that actively crocheted. I found six centers that had a crochet group that got together twice a week. They made blankets and baby beanies and donated them to hospitals. Well I gave each of them one huge box of beautiful yarn. They were thrill to receive so much yarn.

My teenage daughter has learned to crochet and was thrilled when she found out that one of her friends did as well. Her friend doesn’t have a or of money for yarn so I get to spoil her a bit. I go through my yarn periodically and make sure her friend gets at least a large paper bag full of it. Sometimes she gets a couple of bags. I get so much joy in sharing all that yarn with someone so young, that loves to crochet as much as I do.

From now on I will only buy items for a specific project AFTER going into my craft room and making sure I don't already have something that will work. It's incredibly freeing!! I work at an Aged Care Facility. And I love to crochet. And I needed to destash, and use up scrappy leftovers. The perfect solution? Crochet a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of lap rugs for the residents. I probably made about 30, maybe more. I didn't count. But it gave me the opportunity to try out different stitches and granny squares. Had a blast, did something I loved to do in my spare time, and reduced my stash considerably.

Thank you for your wonderful ideas, gentle nudges and inspiration to destash. I have been "shopping my own stash" to work it down but, it has been taking little while. I started with my smallest collection - lone 50g skeins of sock yarn. Before I started my journey into sock knitting, I had picked up the yarn to knit pairs of fingerless mitts. So, slowly and steadily, I'm clearing up space on my shelves. 😊 ***Side note*** When I hear the word "destash" I always think of Hervé Villechaize's character, "Tattoo" in the original Fantasy Island open. On my island, he's welcoming me to my favorite fantasy lys "THE Stash." There, the yarn I want is always in stock - in the quantities I need and any color I can imagine. Oh! And, did I mention my fantasy pocketbook allows me to purchase anything in the shop AND I can tote it ALL home in 1 manageable bag? LOL! It's so fun to dream! Lol! 🤟 ✌️💜🧶

My sister is making what she calls a “chaos cover” for her beanbag chair and I destashed some yarn in donation to that cause as a birthday gift per her request. Her only request was that it all be weight 4 and no crazy textures, and that’s the vast majority of what I work with, so she got a nice big bag of yarn that had been wasting away in my stash without a plan for a long while, some of which I’d been given as part of a friend’s destashing

I've been using a spreadsheet similar to yours for years now, but I add the label color and lot numbers along with the basic color family they fall into. After every project I update it, so that the next time I want to start a project I can use the filters in Excel to determine what yarns I have enough of, then if they're yarns I want to use for the specific project. I also include the label info for grams and yardage, along with a formula to calculate the remaining yardage based on the current physical weight.

@tlyarncrafts I love me a good spread sheet! My yarn spread sheet is way out of date. Usi g that database, how may yards of yarn are you destashing? How many did you keep? I geek out over spreadsheets. Have you thought about expanding the functionality of the destash spreadsheet? Have one big database. Each new item needs to be entered. If/when a project has been decided, put that in. Unlimited ways to sort this information. Sort by date purchased/gifted - if 12 months have passed - put status as destash. See where I'm going with this. Did I mention that I geek out with spreedsheets? HeHe 😅 Congrats on destashing. Challenge yourself and your followers on a no buy month.

This was great! I do a couple of things. First, I am doing a yarn fast for 2024. I will buy the occasional skein to finish a project, use a Michael's voucher, or pick up something I know I'll actually use at a thrift store, but so far, I'm averaging just under $4 a month. I'm doing a spreadsheet of yarn in my stash so I will eventually know what I actually have, and I'm trying to go in once a week and find a project to add to my "to do" list from things I have on hand. I'm also committed to having a scrap project going at all times, often a blanket, and some of those I'll donate to a mission in town. I have been thinking I need to do the same with hats, so some of the bigger leftover skeins can go there. I also always have a dishcloth, scrubbie, or potholder going, and that is where my random 100% cotton goes. Some of those end up in my drawer, most go to the mission. And then our library system pairs with a local store, Who Gives a Scrap, so once a month I take random craft destash stuff, and I bring it there, and I can come home with new to me stuff. Or not. In April, I brought in 23 pounds of stuff, and left with 4.
