To be fair the bones add something really very disgusting to the already slimy texture of the fish, which as you rightly point out… smells like a bad portaloo lol D

While I never had surströmming myself (actually I only know a handful who had, and I’ve been living in sweden all my life). However I know that much that it’s not intended to be ingested without additional preparations (it’s more of an ingredient than to be eaten as is).

your suppose to have potatoes and garlic and sallad , bred to it also , not only the fish . but most people who tries the fish the first time , they try eating it without nothing else , only the fish , and they leave the open can right under their noses to smell the disgusting smell .
