Let's talking about using flash at a wedding reception! In this video, I go over my standard setup for getting open dance floor dancing shots. This is a little different from your first dance or parent dances and even the speeches. This is just raw pure wedding reception fun! If you have any more questions about how I use flash feel free to leave them in the comments. I'm always happy to answer questions.

Hey John just found your channel it is one of the best channels on KZbin hands down. I'm a Canon shooter right now, just a rebel t5i, looking to upgrade my body and thinking about switching to Fuji after watching your content. How far can you push the iso before it really hurts quality? I know their crop sensors but seems like they handle lowlight pretty well

great shots! for the Godox you don't ever use TTL maybe with some flash exposure comp (lowering it by a stop)? I would think that a manual setting is more consistent but sometimes you might miss something as the flash was "fixed"? thanks!

I’ve only done two smaller weddings (my first was in a school cafeteria!) and was just asked this past week to shoot a third in April. Feeling rather nervous about it, I started checking out KZbin to see if I could get some pointers. That’s when I discovered your channel. Your videos are an inspiration to me! I now feel more confident and have picked up some ideas having watched them. Thank you and keep putting out great work!

hi I'm a wedding photographer from Belgium. I've stopped shooting for a long while now. I had my children (3) and took the time for my family. Now that the youngest will be going to kindergarden. I'll start shooting again, I'm very excited though a lot has changed...I have experience for several years but need to practice again. obviously I will buy new gear, it has been 10 years since my last wedding. anyway that's a bit about me..just wanted to thank you, to remind me what I Love to do. Ha! Now discovered a way of getting different dance floor shots! In the past I've fired off about 20 shots, knowing that 1 or 2 will go in the album. This videohas broadened my mind set. My next challenge is to master the gymnastics that is cake cutting. The choreography for that important shot is so difficult - well to me anyway (I've got far too many shots of false smiles as the couple slice into the cake). Great video series - very engaging and love the humour.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Glad this helped out. That’s interesting about the cake cut. That’s one of the most easy and standard parts of the day to me. One of the biggest things is communication throughout. Making sure not just to let the couple do what they want but speak up when there’s something you need. So that you can get the shot. Hopefully I’ll have a video about it soon.

John, awesome video and advice. What is the best way to capture motion with flash at a wedding? Do you shoot high speed flash synch or let the flash freeze the action a the synch speed of the camera (typically 1/200 or 1/250). You seem to suggest using a higher speed but you can only override camera synch speed in high speed flash synch settings and the lowers the power of the flash and causes you to raise ISO.

I did something similar to this at a wedding last night. I shoot twin R6 bodies and just used one camera for this - used a mini softbox on godox v1 pointed forward at like 1/32 , Samyang ef 14mm 2.8 at F8-F11, prefocused to 1.5m, ISO 1000 and shutter of 1/6s. Then I deliberately jerked the camera forward or tilted every shot to motion blur the fairy lights and background while the flash froze the dancers expressions 😄

Good evening John, love your channel. its helped me no end with wedding photography. I have a few questions, firstly I'm a fuji xt-3 shooter, is your flash for on camera flash set to 1st curtain whilst using magmod mag sphere? secondly what zoom do you have your flash on while using this method (do you change it?) and lastly on white balance, I have your presets and was wondering when using any of the white balance modes do you leave the WB shift on R0 B0? if you don't that's fine I was just curious. Thanks John for this video. I always feel inspired after watching your channel. I have a question about shooting large family groupings of 20-30 people at a reception with flash - Depending on the number of rows what does your f-stop usually stay around? If there were 2-3 rows would you be on f 5.6 or higher with flash? Or would you keep your flash wide open? Thanks!

I usually use the flash with a radio trigger .. the camera in one hand, the flash in the other and I fire the flash at an angle of about 45 degrees, perhaps with slower shutter speeds to create trails of ambient light ... however this magmod looks interesting! thank you for the tip!

I don't want to only make it about camera systems but I've never really had that problem for the most part. I think there was once or twice that it happened but it was mainly due to the lens I was using. Also, if I am in that situation I tend to over shoot just to make sure I have more options. But a big thing too is not to use continuous auto focus (if you are). I find single point to be MUCH more reliable and the better way to focus especially when it gets dark.

Hi John, Interesting, I have tried most way to light party shots, but just one point I must say there is no point in using the Mag Sphere as there is not discernible difference in light just a little more control on the specular, it just adds extra weight and cost you at least a stop in power.

Glad you liked it! I hope to do more flash videos as well. Typically I'll leave my camera on autofocus single point. And have the point in the center of the frame and a fairly large square (not too big however). Since you can change the square size of the single point focus on the Fuji it's a huge help as well. Typically I don't get things that I wouldn't want.

For open skies you can use the same approach however it’s not going to give you AS much light as you might want. Magmod makes another device that throws the light forward more. You might want to look into that.

Thanks for the tips! Flash photography scares me! I need to cover an outdoor evening wedding for a friend in Oct.. I own the Magsphere and the Magbounce. Would the Magbounce (never used yet) be a better choice for an outdoor reception which will have little light? Is a wide angle lens a problem for flash with the Mag family?
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The magbounce is going to be a better choice because it's going to funnel the flash forward rather than having it shoot everywhere. If you use the sphere you're loosing a good portion of your flash to the air since it's not going to bounce back off of the ceiling.

Do you use a mag grid ever for wedding receptions?

Agreed ( how we shot differently ) Using Minolta Glass ( because I just love their colour rendition ) I prefer to shoot well back ( 75mm focal length, aperture wide open, occasionally down to F4 ish Shutter 1/200S no flash ) My style is to pluck out individual subjects or couples.. ( Similarly to " Street " ) I'm watching for the moment during which it is possible to create a portrait within an environment of chaos .. Kit: Sony Crop sensor DLSR, or SLT Mounted with a Minolta 50mm F1.4 Wider 28mm in pocket ( nothing too valuable ) 😊 Because it's easier to predict movements this style of shooting is better suited to formal dancing ( Country/ Ballroom/ Rock n Roll, etc ) Than ad-hoc ( freestyle) As in " Street " where motions & patterns of movement can be more predictable when confined to a passage / corridor, etc . Success is all about carefully selecting your vantage point, and moment 🙃

Hi Jhon, thanks for the tips!!! What flash speed can I use in a wedding reception)
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 2 жыл бұрын
I genreally keep it fairly close to sync speed. I usually sit around 1/160 or 1/125 since thre flash itself will stop the motion.

Nice. Just got an X-T3 and I’m slowly trying to get comfortable shooting with my Fuji at a wedding. I’m currently on the Sony system. Anyway...do you bounce flash/off camera flash at receptions at all? Also, is the X-T2 still a good enough camera to be a second body?
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 4 жыл бұрын
I do typically use bounce flash and sometimes off camera but basically, I'm shooting mainly how you see me here in this video depending on what the ceilings look like and how high they are. The magsphere helps with bounce flash because you can still bounce it off of the ceiling but some is also going forward. For the X-T2 I think it's still totally usable. I really only switched away from it at the start of 2019. I had been using the X-T2 all the way up to that point.

What is your flash settings at and also what is your camera shutter speed? Thanks for the great content!
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography Жыл бұрын
My flash is generally set to manually and power is usually around 1/32 or 1/16. And my shutter speed is close to the sync speed. So either 1/250 or 1/200. Then I adjust ISO if I need a little more light at all.

Thank you for this great video! Can you say usually which shutter speed do you use to have sharp images? Thanks!
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Generally I’m around 1/160th or 1/200 when I’m using my flash. Keep in mind the flash will help stop the motion and keep things sharp as well. So you don’t have to worry about your shutter being too low.

Hey man, so I noticed that the flash you have has this wide top on it (almost looks like a lens hood) that the Magmod attaches to, does that come with the flash or was that a separate purchase? Because when I follow the link to the Godox flash I dont see that wide top in the photos. Thanks man, loving your videos and your work, really helping me think through things I forgot, especially with a wedding coming up soon!
