Dave Pelz looks so well balanced over every shot. He is my mentor. All I have to do is imitate him. It has worked so far.

Phil says never play the ball in the middle of your stance for chips. Forward or back.

Phil meant for chips. Pelz was his coach. Middle for pitch Forward for soft sand Middle for hard sand Back for chips Left for cut lobs Left and back for cut libs from tight lies Back for knockdowns This is all from Pelz book, Short Game Bible.

Interesting - Adam Bazalgette (3 times best PGA coach of the year I understand) adds that if we lean slightly towards the target for short chips (assuming the ball is centred as per this vid), the bottom of the swing arc will be beyond the ball, ideally about 2" giving a far greater potential for a clean strike. I know this has worked for me and would love to know Mr Pelz's thoughts? For me, the combination of correct ball positioning and the slight lean towards the target has completely revolutionised my short short game. Cheers and thank you from Oz - Dave

That's good advice for short chip shots where there is no weight shift. If you are using a weight shift, you will be shifting your weight to the front foot on the downswing, so there is no need to set up with the weight forward.

@@TheNYgolfer Yes, making for a simpler swing, which for me, is the better option around the green!

Michelson has a video out in which he says the ball should be off front foot for high shots and back foot for low shots. This seems to be the opposite of the technique here described. I thought Michelson was a Pelz follower. How are these two videos resolved?
@johnbeard3733
@johnbeard3733 6 жыл бұрын
Emmett Ryan Phil really stresses keeping the weight on the front foot which moves bottom of arc forward. I guess that's the difference. but I agree with you, Big deviation from teacher.

if you are able to hit the ground after the ball or have such long, shallow swing arc you can pull off flop shots in the front of the stance. If not, then I would play it center to back to make sure you hit the ball first and the ground second. If you still have a 60 degree in your hand you aren't losing much if any trajectory. Hope this helped, Jeff PGA

All those quoting Phil as saying "the ball should only be played forward or back in the stance, NEVER in the middle", consider this kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKfIdHmYjMuJgcU Ignore Kostis' explanation because as usual, he sees whatever he wants to see to make a point. The ball is NOT back as Kostis says. Phil has the ball EXACTLY in the middle between the heels of his feet. His turned out front foot makes it appear that the ball is SLIGHTLY aft of center but it's not. Judge for yourself. Note where the divot starts on this wedge shot.. Just forward of center. That's why Pelz suggest the ball be placed in the center. Does it make sense for the average golfer to move the ball either to the front or rear of the stance if the divot starts just forward of center? Where is the ball here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5jOlKGQrsx6pLs or here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pampimumYrmhh9k Here is his complete short game dvd. Go to the last minute of the video where he hits 50 yard pitch shots at around the 1:01:00 point. The only spot where I could find a good camera angle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZndimqKfrKhg7c No where on that whole DVD does he move the ball forward or back in his stance except for specialty shots. Every normal shot he has the ball in the center if you look objectively and compensate in your mind for when the camera is off center . Yes a pro can manipulate the low point and move the ball around to change trajectories and spin rates for specialty shots, but those are rare occasions and certainly wouldn't be something you would teach to beginners or even intermediates. Pelz and The Golf Channel Make their big bucks catering to the average golfer not the elite.

Even with the ball in the center, I can still chunk or blade.. There is more to it than that.. Tempo and hand action, conscious or unconscious is critically important.

I’m a big fan of Dave’s short game method. A big part of it is his finesse swing, which uses a dead hands approach. You control the distance on your full wedge shots by the loft of the club and the length of your backswing. So yes, there’s definitely more to it than simple ball position, but I recommend checking out his short game bible. Happy golfing.

TheJhaley12 he talks about keeping the ball in the middle of your stance, even when you open your stance. So it gives the impression that it’s in the front of your stance but really it’s in the middle of your open stance. If there was a 3 foot circle around the hole and the camera was at 3 o’clock and you had a ball in the middle of your stance, say you went from 9 o’clock to 8 o’clock and it’s in the middle of a stance it would give the impression from the side view that the ball is forward in your stance

you start out talking about bladed and chunked shots from what looks like 15 to 20 yard pitch shot. While Pelz does a great job of explaining , NO shots hit. it would be nice to see the master in action.Then back in the studio both players hit pretty hard wedges , maybe 60 yard shot , not the delicate shot everyone chunks. You guys should know a lot of people learn visually , why didn't you hit the shot you were talking about, VERY disappointed.
