Always wondered why you lean over the fenders and struggle with with engine swaps and cleaning the engine bay with the front clip still on. With decades of GM experience, I almost always remove the front clip for engine / tranny swaps. Admittedly, I don't have all the cool shop tools you have, but removing the front clip really makes the job you're showing a lot easier and the clean-up a cinch. Then add the front suspension work, and well just curious is all!!

Good to hear you started with a non matching number car . Few cars have lasted to be one . IMO there is nothing wrong with conversions .But if a car has made it that long its more valuable than a converted one . Or at least some are willing to pay more . In the late 70s I did not read the direction that came with my trans plate adapter to install a Buick trans to a SB Chevy . After a 100 miles on a rebuilt motor the thrust bearing and crank were wiped out .And a complete rebuild was needed , The instruction said to install washers the thickness of the adapter between flex plate and converter . When done I had no further problems . Was that needed with this plate ?

Interesting to see this car still has the holes for the TH400 crossmember as well as the TH350. I believe '74 was the last year for the TH400 in a Firebird, and my '80 didn't have them. My car was originally a 301 with TH350, but I installed a 455 with TH400 and ended up drilling the frame and buying a reproduction crossmember.

Great work guys, only one thing, for a few dollars more you could have upgraded your rubber brake lines to some nice stainless braided lines. They dam near last forever and dont expand when the pressure hits them giving you better brakes and better pedal feel.

What's better than a pressure washer? A steam cleaner. Hot pressurized water will cut grease and grime much better, even after soaking in degreaser! It also dries faster since a lot of it evaporates due to the hot temperature.

474 Pontiac - Great - Butler did another 474 earlier and got 612 pump gas hp + you don't have to rev a Pontiac V8 To get good power out of it . For you higher rpm guys A Pontiac 400 ( 465 ) 3 inch mains etc. Did Win the Engine Masters Challenge in 2015 making 3 pulls of 720 pump gas hp on the dyno - the build was nothing to exotic - Kauffman high port heads etc. :)

That built 700r4 would have been a dream for my 80 T/A that had a mildly built 455 in it. I could have then lowered the rear gear ratios for even more torque and still cruise the highways. As it was though, the t-top body was already getting twisted up at the B pillars from the torque.

It just said the last year of the 455 was 79 thats wrong. 78 was the last year and all 78 455 were 77 leftovers and late 78 was the shaker said t/a 6.6 and thru 79 which was an olds 403 not a 455
@grand73am2 жыл бұрын
Actually 76 was the last year for the 455. The last 400's were built and stockpiled in the 78 model year, for use in the 78's and 79's. So, the 79's got what was left after 78. There weren't enough 400's left for 79 to put in all the 79's, so they put the remaining 400's only in 4 speed cars, and the automatic 79's got the Olds 403. The t/a 6.6 shaker decal was the 400 engine. The 6.6 litre decal was the 403 Olds.
