Enjoyed that walk Phil. Hardly recognised it. I worked for a while at The Old Stoneyard, it was Charles Hill Memorials then. Miss those old dress shops with the lovely interiors and friendly service. Yes, Spear & Jackson too. Never knew about the well. Great to see The Leathern Bottel is still well maintained and that some buildings are Grade 11 listed. We need to retain some character in our towns. Tfs 😊

I remember The Cottage pub, not that many years ago. You mentioned The Old Leathern Bottel, anyone visiting there should also try The Old Blue Ball 10 mins walk away.

It's amazing that after all these years no one has ever changed the frontage. I have a feeling the surname began with a B but who knows

@user-sc3ts6lf8r I'm not aware it was called Bescot Drop Forgings although its original name was Elwell forges, Elwell was of course a big name in Wednesbury at the turn of the 20th Century

Hi Phil, being born in Short St just off the Bilston Road and a short Walk from the High Bullen, I remember the gaumont well, As we got older we would take it in turns every Saturday Matinee and one of us would pay to go in, then that person who go down to the side of the screen area which was behind velvet curtains and open the fire escape door and loose us all in under the cover of darkness when the lights went down, as you looked over to the cenotaph on the side of the road it is always a serene place to sit and just observe , my late uncle is mentioned as one of those killed in action in 1944 at the Battle of Caen in France, I remberthe Oakeswell Hall as a youngster but never knew about the well, Across the road from Kendrick where the health centre is now was my old doctors surgery, my GP was Dr Huey, he bought me into the world in the upstairs front room of my grandparents house, I later learned that is son also became a doctor,I had many happy hours at the age of 15 looking through the jobs at the Labour exchange, you could go in ther say on a Monday, pick a job and start on Tuesday, not like that these days eh! phil, another fine video , Well Done, Mike AKA Poggy

That Chinese on Walsall road was my regular in the 80s. Bamboo Hill it was called back then. I used to walk from Whitley street to Stuart Bathurst every day for school 80-85. Went different ways all the time so it wasn't boring 😂 sometimes that way, sometimes over the top or more of a back way. Used to go to the Cottage on a Sunday with mates. Good big beer garden. It's changed so much. I left the area about 1990/91
@awalkwithphil2 ай бұрын
I think it was bamboo hill and I also visited it regularly in the 80s so much so I ended up with food poisoning. I will try and film a few more areas of Wednesbury just to show how much has gone from our youth,. Many thanks for this comment, much appreciated.

@@awalkwithphil I watched your walk around the town center too, makes me sad how it's changed. I had such good childhood memories. My aunty is still there in Windmill Street, she's 87 now. I need to go visit soon so I'll have a good look around.

I think the chapel in the Wood Green/ Brunswick cemetery was still standing in the late 60's. I remember as kids we all went racing to the chapel on our bikes because the Express & Star had done a story saying that someone had seen a ghost there, or it could have been on the TV news or both.
@awalkwithphilАй бұрын
You may very well be correct. When filming by the gates someone was just leaving the cemetery and told me that a building stood there and was bombed during the war. I took his word for it so he may have been mistaken. Many thanks for the correction

The shop next door to pub was called Gibson my nan used to shop there she lived in vicarage road
@awalkwithphilАй бұрын
Thanks very much Mark the name of that shop has bothered me for years every time I passed it. Gibson, at last!! They retired and moved to a house off Vicarage rd and the shop has looked like it does now for about 30 years or so. I used to go in there to buy bacon and Mr Gibson would use his bacon slicer, the bacon was some of the best around. Great little shop. Much appreciated

Start of video you showed Squirers Walk but did you know the houses on the right going up was Squirers Walk and opposite houses was situated in the name of Brunswick Terrace? Nightmare for delivery drivers lol Good to see Woodgreen Nursing home still there, delivered every day there from Oconnells shop 🙂 and delivered all those areas, you look familiar, maybe you used to come in the shop I worked 🤷♂️😉

Very interesting info i wasn't aware the 2 areas ran parallel - I did indeed live around the area in the early 90s for a short time so you may have seen me around, it's a small world really!
