Fun Fact: When a Japanese soldier is burning in this game, sometimes instead of saying "Kasai" (Fire) and "Atsui" (Hot), they will say "Api" (Fire in Indonesian) and "Panas" (Hot in Indonesian). This indicates that some of the soldiers are Heiho Soldiers (forcibly conscripted). At the time the Japanese Empire invaded Indonesia, the Javanese (one of the native people of the Indonesian archipelago) actually considered the Japanese as liberators. Many believed that the Japanese invasion and their removal of the Dutch force (viewed as the oppressor) coincided with a Javanese prophecy. The Japanese also formed a volunteer military force made up of Javanese youth. The name of this unit was PETA (Pembela Tanah Air - Defenders of the Homeland). By the time I learned this little detail, I was horrified that I may just burn one of my countrymen alive since I'm also an Indonesian.

I did some light digging on 'bersiap', and past month there has been an ongoing debate in the Netherlands about an exposition in the Rijksmusem about this period of Indonesian history, which includes the term 'bersiap'. It would appear that this has pissed off an Indonesian historian, who argues that this is racist towards the Indonesians because it creates an image of 'primitive, uncivilized Indonesians as perpetrators' and also because it is actually the fault of the Dutch for wanting their colony back. Because of that, there was news that the Rijksmuseum would refrain from using the term. This of course pissed off the 'Indiërs' (Dutch citizens of Indonesian descent, and also the main victims of the killings), the Rijksmuseum quickly stated that they had no plans of dropping the term given it is the only well-known term for it and they were going to be unbiased anyway, which in turn angered the Commission of Dutch Debt of Honour (basically the Group that Really Hates Dutch War Crimes in Indonesia) who have started a court case about this 2 weeks ago. For those few souls on the internet capable of reading Dutch (because this is purely a topic within the Netherlands, the Jakartan post was the only site that listed an article on this in English, it requires paid conscription) here's the article from the Indonesian historian: www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2022/01/10/schrap-term-bersiap-voor-periodisering-want-die-is-racistisch-a4077367

On the eastern front, you are a blood thristy soviet killing Nazis from left to right without mercy, the enemy is most of the most time, running away from you, you feel the rush of killing everything on site and it is more enjoyable from that perspective. On the Pacific, things changes alot, the enemy is ruthless and it always charge at you, even if you are kicking their asses they still coming, you really start to feel the toll of constanly be on your toes for whatever trap or banzai attack that will come at you, i mean... hell, it really depicts how those U.S soldiers were feeling in that nasty place. @calebmccoy96852 жыл бұрын
Edit: I misread the person above. Still useful information, but don't comment while sleep deprived. Panzer IVs suffered from not great steel. Going by penetration tables for tank vs tank capabilities is pretty pointless without taking that into account. The US didn't use the shitty german steel for their tables and the germans didnt use american steel for theirs. For example the early T-34 wasn't some invincible thing, it could be broken apart when shot by the early panzer IIIs because the steel was really brittle and the welds were shit. There was the occasional well built one but most were not. The 76mm sherman had better anti armor capabilities because of ammo than the 75 (the 75 got HVAP developed before dday but shipped out to those vehicles later), but less effect when using HE from an ordinance branch report. The Panzer IV F1 / F2 has 50mm of barely sloped shitty german steel in all parts of the front. The 75 was doing an adequate job in north africa against everything that it was expected to go up against, including F1s, so HVAP wasn't deemed necessary to load up on when crossing the channel. That part is believable.

16:30 I think more precisely is that the *modern* notion of Bushido is barely connected at all to the ideas it espouses to be a part of; (I.E. the proper Shitno Samurai codes or laws by which to behave honorably in the name of the emperor). The word itself appears in 1616; Kōyō Gunkan (甲陽軍鑑), but the issue is each clan or province had different codes by which you're presumed to be acting ethically. If memory serves right, the "National" version of Bushido as it was taught, drilled, and religiously driven into the Japanese public psyche arose originally in 1905. That's what some folks in that context mean by "It doesn't exist". It did exist, just differently. I'm not excusing anything, just saying it's a bit more nuanced.
@paperclipcereal58962 жыл бұрын
The idea of a Japanese 'nationality' doesn't come about until the appearance of Shinto nationalists in the Edo period, and even then each province is strongly independent. 'Modern Bushido' in the west is very much based off the work of Inazo Nitobe, a Japanese Christian of samurai lineage with a Dutch primary education. Essentially, the occidentalist work of a Japanese man attempting to redeem his heathen childhood and lineage and reconcile it with his Christian western adulthood became the basis of modern understandings of 'Bushido' in the west. Nitobe's work essentially says 'oh Bushido is just Japanese chivalry' which is another rabbithole to go down regarding modern and historical views on chivalry. The idea of it in the East was absolutely driven into Japanese after the Russo-Japanese war as a way to foster national unity. Also after hearing the bit the very idea of 'honor' in Japanese history is fairly vague and we have preconceptions that don't exactly fit historical time periods. So like you said Bushido existed and was different by region and school. One of the more interesting things reading about different views of historical Bushido is that some of them have basically nothing to do with 'codes of honor' at all. That's an Edo period idea at best. Many of them are basically 'the way of the soldier' rather than 'chivalry' and detail battlefield tactics, weapon techniques, and other technical details rather than ideological points.

Long story short the MPs got their racism on and stirred up trouble, really didn't like it when a black officer from the segregated unit tried to mediate the issue so they escalated it until the two American units literally had a drawn out battle in the town. In Call of Duty 2, in the final US mission, you walk out of the Amtrak, though in the D-Day mission you do get blown out of your transport.

Only sources are vague on Sherman tanks lost fighting the Japanese, on Okinawa 220 tanks of all types were lost including Sherman's, number not specified, most tanks used against Japan were either the AmTanks LVT series 1-5 with all variants and Stuart's as they were much lighter and therefore easier for naval landings, out of nearly 50,000 Sherman's built it is thought maybe a total of 1,000 were deployed in the Pacific between all allied nations

10:02 This is why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is objectively the most subversive COD game of all time. There is a scene where you're in a helicopter, it gets hit, but the pilot pulls a hail Mary and keeps her flying. Yes, you read that right; there is a Call of Duty game where the transport DOESN'T explode.

The bazooka pulled a Vanguard, it needs two operators, one needs to pull the pin on the rocket, if not, and it was pulled before insertion, it would fall out of the tube and hit the floor, pull an Al Bashar on the Marine, and make his grave scattered.

yeah bushido is a post-hoc construction of the late tokugawa period as late period bureaucratic samurai looked to the past to give their own lives and position in society legitimacy. very similar to the 20th century british glorification of the virtues of the latter-day empire as the contemporary empire was crumbling. similar, though different too, to the 18th and 19th european conceptions of "chivalry" as it existed in the high medieval. chivalry was at least explicitly talked about though, if almost never hewn to. but in principal, they're very similar. people at the top of society inventing stories about their forefathers that grant their position some legitimacy by association. it just so happens to all be horseshit

Pretty much this! It's a really interesting area of research, and I highly recommend that people read into it further. The thesis I was referring to was by Oleg Benesch, “Bushido: The Creation of a Martial Ethic in Late Meiji Japan", and examines in detail not only the lack of medieval sources suggesting any sort of broadly understood warrior's code, but also points to the efforts to explicitly create a foundational myth during the Meiji restoration.

It's relatively accurate for the BAR's to not have the carry handle,all the BAR's in service were "upgraded" to the A2 model wich added a carry handle,a really bad bipod and the rear sight of the 1903 Springfield. Troops in the field would regularly ditch the carry handle and the bipod,mainly because the bipod made the gun so front heavy and the carry handle would get in the way more often than not.

How did you guys get CO-OP running!? I have tried for years and looked up countless tutorials, but they never worked. I just assumed the game was dead. Also love your historical commentary! (This was way better than vanguard right? You should consider trying Medal of Honor Airborne next, which is about the extensive operations of the 82nd, 506th, and 101st paratrooper divisions. It has a lot of historically accurate time-period-correct weapons, [But also some not] and i would love to see you dismantle it. It is only $10 on steam last time i checked.)

Well if this is supposed to be the raid on Makin Atoll by the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion in Aug 17 1942. Pretty sure the Marine Raiders didn't have camouflage uniforms. However the Marine Raiders should have ten man squads with a Sgt as squad leader with three fire teams of three men each. Each fire team having a Tommy gun, B.A.R., and M1 Garand rifle. Which really boosted the fire power of the Marine Raiders. Now the Japanese Type 100 SMG shouldn't be on the Makin Atoll historically. As far Japanese weapons of WW2 the Type 100 SMG was pretty rare. There was only like 8000 of those produced in the entire war. The Type 100 SMG was only encountered in any numbers in battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa if my memory is correct.

I thought it was someone common knowledge outside of weebs that bushido was a post-hoc invention of imperial japan to justify and lionize what would otherwise be described as the gangsterism of the samurai. In a lot of ways the samurai had more in common with the Yukuzi than honourable warriors.
