Weedeater engine Hughes 300 RC Helicopter and Space Shuttle launched from RC plane-1982

In 1982 I was flying this Hughes 300 Helicopter with a Weedeater, Echo 120 Gas engine. It was a favorite and easy to start, plus see other antics in this Vintage footage. If anyone knows where I can get another one of these helicopters, I would be very interested. It was a Kobe Kiko, but there is no identifying marks. I miss those days and my friends. This reminds me of my petrol Bell 47 that I had, 40 years ago with my Futaba radio, I used to fly at baiter point every Sunday in the summer, and belonged to the Southern Flying Club and loved it, started flying helicopters with my Hirobo 707 bubble and boom. They were made in Japan and I paid $1000 for this, and it was used! Probably it was the cost. That was a lot of money back then in the 70's and could be the reason.

Yep, truly extraordinary! I couldn't fly my Kalt Baron 20 without gyro back then. My Concept 30sr had rate gyro but I never felt comfortable flying it until they came out with heading hold gyro.

The eighties was still pretty much old school. Its amazing how much we have gained in the RC field. I wasnt flying back then because I was raising a family back then and money was always tight. That and I was into snowmobiles. My brothers were into RC and I finally got back into it again. The things we did back in the 70's with our nitro toys. What fun.

hi,, I had 2 of the 300 heli, they were a lot of fun back in the 70,s it was good to see you flying , the heli, I flew my heli for 2 yrs, and never crash them they were a good heli to fly and my first flight was in a 25 mh wind, I had more fun with it than the ones you can buy to day, I do have a 500 electric, with a gyro, on it, it not the same as the good old 300, I been flying sents 1954 I was flying my 300 in the 70,s up to 1975, it was hard to get parts for it all so, i had 2 helis, not 2 many people could fly the 300, I flew it all the time my first flight was in a 25 mph wind, flew real good,,

Ah, the good ol' Mattel Messerschmidt. I learned to fly helicopters in this, not the model but what the Army called the TH-55.

@@NightFlyyer That was the nickname we gave the TH-55 (Hughes 300) helicopters in US Army primary flight school at Fort Wolters, Texas, near Dallas-Ft Worth area. I went through in 1969. After primary, we went to Fort Rucker, Alabama for instrument training (under the hood for the entire time) then transition to Hueys. After graduation they offered me my choice of advanced training and I went to Ft Hunter/Stewart in Savannah, Georgia. Nowadays I fly the mighty little Eachine E-129 in my front yard.

Yes, the road dead ends at the San Juan Landfill dump, which was closed on Sundays, so traffic was minimal. It was a good place to experiment for sure. Thanks for the comments.

Dubro is a usa company known for making clevises, control horns, wheels, and hardware. I never knew they made gas helis. Mine was definitely a Hirobo though, made in Japan. Thanks.

Mine was actually the Dubro Hughes 300 and there is a video on you tube that looks just like mine check it out. Vintage heli- 1974 Hughes 300. and if I remember right the rotor span was around 72 inches. After about 5 years of flying it I hit some tall grass with My tail rotor and striped the gears in the tail rotor gear box and I couldn't find parts for it so I sold it. But I kind of wish I still had it.

I was mostly into RC Pattern planes in 79. That heli you had was a DUB-RO and they stopped manufacturing them around 1977. I did not start flying helis seriously till 1979 when I worked at Kraft RC systems and met up with John SImone, the national helicopter champion who owned American RC helicopters and began learning on his Mantis helis, and later worked with him in the movie Blue Thunder. I only bought was actually available and why I did not know about it. I wish you still had it too. Id buy it.

Dave, Great video. The shuttle launch was awesome. The Hughes 300 brings back memories of assembling a Dubro Shark back in 75 that was powered by a glow fuel converted O&R gas engine. It was also a pull start, but spat out more fuel than it used. Wish they had kept it gas. It was a fixed pitch heli that hovered OK, When Dubro came out with a collective pitch upgrade, it made the heli much better, but back then were no gyros, as you have mentioned. Went back to flying planes until Schluter came out with the Champion, which was a very good heli and now gyros were available. Bought the Schluter Scout and also a Hirobo Shuttle. Still have them all and the Shuttle is being converted to electric. Just checked your channel and sorry to see the loss of your home.

some guys from my club are really old school like that. flying heli's that are intended to fly with fbl systems with absolutely no gyro at all. not even a flybar head to stabilize the Heli. that's hardcore..

Final Report: Dumpmaster Rocket Command official (RktMan), added that "getting orbit would have been frosting the cake" but primary and most secondary objectives were met. The flight was delayed by ignition wiring anomalies (as seen in the video), and sub- sequent holds were caused by a series of minor problems but the Space Shuttle finally blasted off like a bat out of hell and parachute recovery brought the craft down to a soft landing. Conclusion: The Mission was successfully completed by the Dumpmaster team and the next project was a F100 Rocket attached to the bottom of Dave’s Scimitar that “Threw it!” as stated by Dave when the rocket fired..! Wow that brings back so many memories for me being little and watching all the dads play with their RC cars or planes. the hughes helicopter will always be my favorite I watched Magnum PI just to see the car and to see TC's hughes helicopter those were the two favorite things about that show. I hope someone comes through with a hughes 300 for you you guys looked like you were havin some fun out there. If you find any more cool footage we would love to see it. I was 3 or 4 back then Dave and remember every summer of each age vividly Im almost 40 now and this video just brought back so many cool memories thanks for sharing this!

That big Hughes 300 is amazing to see now. I'm sure it was unbelievable back in '82. You really fly it like a champion. Also, who was the helpful guy @ 4:30 saying, "Lift it up... Get the plane off the ground?" Because you probably wouldn't have know what you were supposed to do if he hadn't been there. LOL I guess some people just can't help it...

That was Dave. It was his glider. Bud who said get it off the ground worked at Rockwell on the Shuttle model prototype and we later test flew that for them. He felt the ground was holding it in the downwash and stiction. He wanted some one to hold it up off the ground and try it, like a hand launch. This heli had no gyro, so of course it took some work to simply it, but it flew in fwd flight beautifully. Thanks much.

Nightflyer Dave I talked to my friend Dave & he said he remembered those Helicopters ! But they were just going out of use when he started flying though ! He said your head speed must have been high in order to control that tail ! He doesn't know of any of them around though !

Thanks for checking. Actually the head speed doesn't cause the problem of torque. At constant speed, (no matter what the speed) the gyro is not used much! It is the speeding up or down or increasing/decreasing pitch that causes the tail to swing. As long as the head speed is constant, there is not much torque applied and is easy. Its is landing or accelerating that causes you to get busy on the tail rotor stick, hence why I pinch the left stick. You cant afford to "drop" it. Today's head speeds are much higher. Thanks again.

Hi Lorenzo. Well it was just a service road that dead ended at the Dump and closed on Sundays and evenings. We fly on the roads around here a lot too, but the Sheriffs all know me, so I guess we are lucky. Flying sights are hard to find for sure. Thanks.

Gyros are only effective when you increase, decrease pitch or move throttle up and down. At constant speed, gyro is not used much. It is only when you move the throttle they take effect and compensate as torque and anti torque gets involved. Otherwise, I learned without a gyro and why it was hard for heli pilots to learn back in the days. You had to constantly move the rudder stick to compensate, hence why I pinch the left stick. Good question. Thanks.

I've only ever flown on HH mode on my gyros. I failed to take that into account when I asked tha question. I have however flown on rate mode on a sim, so would I be correct in saying that a heli without a gyro would also act the same? Watching you fly a heli from the same year I was born makes me realize just how far these models have come. How did you learn back then? Buddy cords? Obviously no Sims back on those days

The sim does not correct the same as in real life on rate mode. Aerofly comes close, but still not the same. We did not use buddy cords back then as the control pilot could not act fast enough. We learned by trial and error. It took me 6 months of incredible and frustrating practice just to learn to hover, and my Tutor was John Simone Jr. He was the National Helicopter champion at the time and manufactured his own Helicopters in his company, American RC helicopters. I learned on a Mantis. When his company burned down, I began flying Kyosho Concept 30's and actually wound up writing articles for the magazines, including Rotory for Mike Mas, another Nationals Champion, where I did a product review on the Nexus 30SX. Your right, things have really changed and helis are are easy today.

Well, I dont have the helicopter at all, and remember I paid about $2000 for the first one, so having 2 is out of my price range now that the fire destroyed all my models and home, but thanks.

I have one but for Years no time for testing. It has old principle rotorhead, origin servo mixing, origin big gyro. I dont know about dimension od origin rotorblades but have no origin Book of Instructions.
