The short version of this video can be found here: NEWBORN CLOTH DIAPERING at 6LBS: bit.ly/2tQONH4
These are my opinions on all the newborn cloth diapers I used under the cord. These were all cord friendly for my 6.5 lb and 18 in baby. Some of the diapers did fit down the thigh a little so it would fit under the cord a little better. Cord friendly diapers aren't 100% necessary but it is important to me because of past experiences I've had with my other childrens' umbilical cords.
At the end of the day these are just opinions and that's it. It's hard saying what will work for your baby. I put videos like this out here in hopes that it can help you gauge what may or may not work for you. These are diapers that are working for Willows body type, body shape, body length, weight, and amount of absorbency she needs. As she grows the diapers will start fitting differently and she will need more absorbency. Just because I like them for the first week of diapering doesn't mean I'll like them after two months. I'll keep you guys updated on what works and what doesn't. Stay tuned!!

Thanks for being so thorough! I learned something new. I didn't realize that with the rolled elastic it needed to be rolled/tucked in around the legs. I tried a pair of training pants with rolled elastic and they leaked, but I didn't realize I wasn't putting them on right.

I know its an old video but they even tell you in the hosp to keep diapers away from the cord and to fold down disposables. I'd be ok with a cover covering it but nothing that could get wet like a prefold or aio, my exception would be where its borderline covering/not covering. I like a good gap between diaper and cord. I've had a disposable folded diaper still rub up against it and bleed a little, in that instance id rather just cover it and clean it well and dry it after. Cord stumps freak me out too and belly buttons in general!

I use witch hazel on the cord. Dries up and falls off 4-7 days. Witch hazel doesn't sting like rubbing alcohol but dries nicely and disinfects.

Totally makes sense to talk about the cord especially with what happened to a previous baby! I would be paranoid too! I know I tried with my second but everything went over her stump because she was so tiny. She was under 5lbs.

I watched this when you first made it and now I'm watching this again and I appreciate how much you talk about the cord I made sure to use cord safe diapers with my 1 year old and my 2 yr old we use disposables in the newborn stage i always folded down the front of the diaper to keep it off the cord. It bothers me to have diapers and clothes rubbing on the cord. My 1 yr old lost his cord at 3 days and my 2 yr old lost his around 2wks

What you described about the cord falling off early I totally understand. This happened to my second baby. It was gross and it did turn red. We put golden seal powder from a pill on it and it helped so much. But it still took a while for it to completely heal.

What a tiny precious baby you have! My baby is 7 weeks and came out at 8.6. I was totally surprised that I love the Thirsties cover! with my first child I wasn’t a fan but I don’t start using them until she fit into the size 2 and just felt they were too flimsy and thin but the NB, XS and size 1 fit so well and the elastic search of a gentleman and some chunky legs. I just wish they had two rows of snaps like you said. I just might have to try putting an extra row of snaps when I convert the Velcro on one of my older covers. I loved the GMD cloth-eez newborn workhouse with my son. The Nikis was too small by one week but The GMD worked and well until 4 week Mark.
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
I'm surprisingly loving the thirsties size 1 right now. I didn't like it with my other 2 cloth diapered children but I find myself reaching for it the most right now. It's weird how preferences vary each time. I'd love to see the nickis bamboo fitted in a snapless version! That would make the fitted last so much longer. The snap placements on it are such a bummer.

Jay's Nest yes I agree a snapless version of Nikis would be awesome! Or at least more snap placements! I really loved how trim it was! We just outgrew the size before the absorbency which was sad!

Jay's Nest also I didn’t realize that blueberry had So much quality control issues. I know I got a couple OS AIO off of the swap page a while back and as I was replacing the elastic I noticed that there is huge variant in size between the diapers. There was one so small it’s almost as small as my newborn blueberries.

Not sure if the cloth eez wrap is the same. But the reason the rumparooz covers feel so soft is because they're made with TPU and not PUL which I LOVE! I naturally favor brands that use TPU over pul. It's a personal preference.

I loved the Velcro imagine bamboo diaper. It wasn't cord friendly but now willow has lost hers it should work really well. Also when my baby started out-peeing it I added a booster under the flap and the snaps helped it stay in place really well.
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
I had someone recommend that I only get the velcro because it lasts so much longer. I've been eyeballing that new green leaf print. I'll definitely give it a try. Its so trim that an added booster won't add much bulk either, which I really like

Super helpful video! I appreciate the in depth reviews! I have one questions about the Nicki’s bamboo overnight fitted- what cover are you using that also fits under the cord with it? One that you mentioned? I ask because I too thought it was huge when I received it (haven’t used it yet). But it seems so big to fit under a newborn cover AND stay under the umbilical cord with a cover over it. Am I making this too complicated? Haha.
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
It's surprisingly flexible and doesn't look as huge when it's actually on. Its a super weird inception lol. The thirsties NB cover actually fits over it. I mainly used the fitteds without a cover in the first week. The rumparooz velcro nb cover worked well under the cord with the fitteds. Thr rumparooz wasn't really one I reached for in the first week because it's a bulkier cover. Generally speaking I've always loved the rumparooz nb cover. With Willows body type anything too bulky was annoying for me which is why I didn't bother using the rumparooz cover under the cord. Now that her cord has fallen off I'm using the rumparooz nb velcro cover, nickis nb cover, imagine nb cover, thirsties size 1, and the blueberry capri size 1 with the fitteds. All of these covers are pretty generously sized and pair well with fitteds.

The happy flute nb cover does resemble the sweet pea cover a LOT especially the velcro ones. I have both the sweet pea and the happy flute velcro and they are very similar. The velcros are exactly the same. I would say the sweet pea has wider front and back panels so it can go wider in the waist and the elastics are just very slightly different. Also the sweet pea doesn’t have the front pocket like the happy flute
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this detailed explanation! I thought about getting the velcro happy flute to see how they compare since they're so alike. I'm not really liking the sweet pea this time around. I've used the happy flute several times and I really like it. I guess the biggest con at this point is how narrow it is. It could be a little wider in the back to accommodate for more fluff lol

Now that your daughter cord fell off I would love to see how some flats fit her. I definitely was on a budget for my baby on the way so I got some infant sized flats 25x25 and one size flats with covers to use from birth-potty train and I'm concerned my one size flats will be ridiculously bulky on my newborn.
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
All of my one size look ridiculous on her right now lol. I tried out the GMD OS muslins flat earlier today and it's pretty bulky. The only fold that wasn't too crazy bulky was the modified kite fold. I'm not a huge fan of the kite fold in general. She's gained 1 lb this past week so i debating if half flats would even be worth it if she continued to grow at this rate. I've heard FSTs are decent for NBs so I'll give that a try soon. I'm thinking of possibly doing a video just about flats and newborns.

If you could I would love that video cuz my stash is mainly 25x25 home made stretchy flats and a couple one sized ones.. I'm hoping my next baby will be born arounnd 8 pounds or more like my daughter was so it won't be too bad...

I feel like 8lbs is the perfect size for a newborn stash. Where did you buy material for your stretchy flats? I've heard kindrel is a good place to buy from but I've been hesitant to buy some fabric.

I bought mine from Kinderel. I got bamboo stretchy French Terry 280gsm and it's soft. And super absorbent I tried them on my toddler and they work great! I highly recommend plus if you don't have a serger, French Terry doesn't fray so just cutting is sufficient.

For under the cord- no, I didn't. Everything was just too bulky since her torso is short and I didnt want anything too close to the cord. I am using my cotton prefolds this week though! My osocozy cotton prefolds are okay, but I'm preferring my Green Mountain Diaper newborn prefolds the most out of all the cotton prefolds I have. The sizing is perfect for her size right now, she's currently 7.4 lbs,

Did or could you review or comment what u thought of the Alva newborn pocket diaper ?
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
I wasnt able to get either the snaps or velcro to work under the cord, so it wasn't included here. It will be included in my next update along with it's own individual review when we get more use out of it. The pocket opening is super annoying and tiny. It's very hard to stuff. I have a few other pockets that I prefer over this one. The leg holes are pretty big. I wasn't able to do the bunny ear hack with the velcro, which was a bummer. Since it is narrow in the crotch it can be a pretty trim diaper depending on what you stuff it with. I tried the geffen nb hemp quick absorber which was super trim. Next I'll try stuffing it with a nb bamboo prefold.

How many nighttime diapers do you suggest for a newborn for a 2 day wash routine? Also what is your favorite nighttime diaper for a newborn?
@JaysNest
@JaysNest 6 жыл бұрын
Most babies usually go through 3-5 changes at night depending on how often they wake and how frequently they poop. I personally like having 3-4 changes per night ready to go. She's 3 weeks now and sleeping 4-ish hr stretches. My favorite combo is a geffen hemp flat and geffen nb quick absorber insert. I use it in a newborn pocket diaper. I found some cheap honeybuns newborn pocket diapers on the swap. I also use kawaii newborn pocket and applecheeks size 1. My daughter is sensitive to wetness which is why I use pockets at night. It's a lot easier to deal with.

Congrats on your pregnancy! Not much longer before baby is here ❤️ I honestly didn't think much about nighttime changes either lol. I'm glad I invested in lots of hemp because shes tipping the border of being a heavy wetter. I'm happy to hear my videos have helped you out though!

Thanks! I'm so ready to have this baby..being pregnant in the summer is ROUGH. Yeah having a heavy wetter is hard! My son is such a heavy wetter it's ridiculous. I'll have to get some hemp just in case this one is too!

How long did the pineapple happy flute fit her?? Is she still in it?

Only until 10 lbs 😔 Which came and went quickly for us. I figured it would've last until 12 but definitely not for willows body type... maybe for a long skinny baby though. It's one of the smallest covers in my stash

They are small very small infact. I have 4 of them and 1 bummis. I'm thinking I should get a few more bummis just incase lol

I saw in your hospital bag you packed newborn alvas! Did you end up trying them? How was the fit?

I didn't start using them until her cord fell off. The velcro sucked lol. 10/10 would not recommend 😂 The snaps were ok. Its very trim and the fit is ok. It's not very big so she's about maxed out of it at 12 lbs. It's hard to stuff and too narrow to put the absorbency we need in it. Willow is a heavy wetter. It's not bad but I wouldn't buy a whole stash of it. If it wete a little easier to stuff then I would've loved it

Jay's Nest thank you! It’s been difficult finding any reviews on their newborn size. We have several of them and our newest is due Oct 2. We’ve got all snaps because I’m just not a Velcro fan at all! I have small babies so I’m glad they fit smaller honestly. Once yours outgrew them was she big enough to fit into OS diapers?

She still fits into the nb size at 12lbs but it's a tight squeeze. The OS are ridiculously huge on her but it fits. The newborn hack that nurse liz posted here on KZbin is ok. I tried it at 10lbs and it's not my favorite fit. Probably wouldn't work well for a tiny tiny baby. We use the OS as is but if your baby has skinny legs then there might be leg gaps.
