As we head north from Canberra to Cape York on our four month adventure, not everything goes our way.
Avoiding Sydney traffic we drive through country NSW stopping overnight at the beautiful Bylong Valley. Having this campground to ourselves and exploring the church and graveyard was pretty special.
Next morning we get hit by rain and push through to Tamworth stopping at the Golden Guitar before pushing through to Guyra. Here we pick a campsite purely because of its name "Mother of Duck Lagoon" and spend a freezing, wet night curled up in the van.
Having enough of the cold weather we decide to cut across through Ebor and reach the coast. It may still be wet but at least it is warmer. Here we camp at Mullumbinby, only 15 minutes outside of Byron Bay.
After recently reaching the southern most point of mainland Australia, I'm keen to visit the Easterly point. Sadly, with notice, we arrive to walk the final metres and it is closed.
Disappointed we check out the Byron Bay Lighthouse and then watch whales play in the rough seas off the point.

Such a great trip planned and looking forward to travelling with you and seeing how the Iridium goes. We're just back from a couple of weeks in the Eastern Goldfields and have to say, as usual, the Iridium was brilliant. Handled the muddy tracks, corrugations, wet roads and all in between brilliantly. Like you we much prefer the less frequented places to stay and the fun of finding them.

Great feedback that the Iridium is doing well. Another area to put on my list Eastern Goldfields. Approaching Brisbane tomorrow, hoping we can find somewhere quiet. Cheers Sharyn

guyra is COLD - you would have driven past my first school - 1978 - bald blair - 7 miles east of guyra on the ebor road - surprised you didn't go to ebor falls - safe travels!

Sooo cold, glad to be on the coast now even though it is raining. It was raining really hard when we passed Ebor Falls and we've been in there before so decided to keep going. One day I'm going to do the Waterfall Way and Region spending a few weeks. It is so beautiful in that region but not appropriate when you mainly have summer, warm clothing with us. Cheers Sharyn

@@sharyns.shenanigansGday again. It’s a good spot, even the toilets n showers are really clean. Another tip, the old bp servo at Lakeland has awesome coffee. I won’t buy take out coffee, I’m not not a coffee snob. I do draw the line at Maxwell house. But, I won’t go past here without buying a cappuccino.

I get the impression that the reason for all the traffic into Byron is because of star spotters. A whole bunch of tourists, hoping to get a selfie with a resident movie star.

@@BradGryphonn star spotting at Byron would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Way too many people to have any chance. I much prefer the beautiful views. Cheers Sharyn

I'm not sure how far North you are as yet (first time seeing this). However, if you want a free overnight stay, the campground at the Beerwah sports ground is open for power and water self sufficient travellers.

@@BradGryphonn hi Brad, we stopped at Beerwah sports ground and it was closed. Not sure if permanently or just because it’s too wet. Thanks for the info, maybe next time. Cheers Sharyn

@sharyns.shenanigans No worries. I should have mentioned that even tho it is 'closed and there is no caretaker, if the chain isn't up in that tree'ed area, you can stay there. Sorry for not explaining that. Looking forward to your next video. I'm currently just North of Yandina, at North Arm, up on the Ridge.

Byron bay is a beautiful part of the world. But like Sydney and wollongong and other places in Australia the people make it ugly and unliveable.
