Hi Ralph! I stumbled on your vid and got some good info. I'm just starting out on carnivore as well. Been doing it for 2 weeks but no idea if I've lost anything as my wife and I are on a 4 month caravanning trip here in Australia. A mate of mine (a fairly long term carnivore) strongly recommends NOT getting on the scales daily. Start out as weighing weekly. In fact, he rarely gets on the scales now, he knows where he's at by the fit of his clothes. As for leg crams, a magnesium supplement is good. I often also use a magnesium spray. I've subscribed to your channel because we're at about the same point of this journey and it will be interesting to see how you (and I) go. I get home in a week so it will really interesting to see where I'm at. Best wishes from Australia! Paul

About poop: (which is really just WASTE products that were NOT consumed as the "foods" that were eaten pass through the body)... Now, I am a strict LION -- I only eat steak (like Jordan Peterson, etc.) And after about 10 days from quitting the carnivore diet to restrict to the Lion diet, I went through a week or so of cramps and constipation-- really upsetting -- but then, finally after a good elimination of poop for a day or two-- IT ALL WENT AWAY--- HOWERVER, now, I rarely poop at all!! Why?.. because ALL of the red meat - steak- and the fat associated with it... All of it is DIGESTED BEFORE it goes through the lower intestines... as in there is literally NOTHING WASTED and their is NO WASTE to get rid of....!! But this did not work at all in the carnivore diet for me... perhaps because I am pretty much LACTOSE intolerant.... and on carnivore, I had all sorts of poop issues, including vomiting while trying to use the throne for number two... (I have lost over 100lbs of fat in six months on the LION diet...) My suggestion, is that if you want to lose weight fast, go to the Lion, steak only diet... It is like a supercharged version of Carnivore...
@RalphKnowsCarnivoreАй бұрын
Robert, You have given me a lot to think about here. First the poop. I think I have gotten to the point where my movements, for the most part, are not happening as often, and sometimes are not very substantial. I guess your explanation of better digestion makes a lot of sense. As far as a strict LION diet, I may be able to do more of this, but I am not sure I can be as strict with it to achieve the same results as you. I think it's safe to say, my wife is going to be wanting a greater variety in her choice of proteins and that may dictate some choices. But I think I could start being a little more red meat oriented. Thanks for the great information. I hope we see a lot more comments from you. Thanks

My weight loss was hampered, i believe due to my chronic histamine dumping, which caused a myriad of physical psychological issues for me and all kinds of meds tests etc. I started the carnivore foods that contained processed ingredients and spices, you know the alluloses, baking powder/soda spices etc. Then one day, realizing that our veggies, fruit has also been man made manipulation/processed. A small example is grapes for their increased sugars, tomatoes another where the pasta oficinados specifically buy a certain tomotos from italy and make their own pasta instead of ultra processed pasta. We humans have manipulated our food as we have the dogs, from large wolves to chiwawa's. Once i went pure carnivore with no dehydrated veggies ie garlic onions, no spices weight dropped fast, My pre diabetic values are now norm, blood psi is very close to norm, my urination frequency is down, and my urine volume is up. Once my visceral fat is down and 90 days is up, i will trial herbs one at a time, with my urination system as the decider. Read some good things about pecorino sardinia romano cheese, hoping that it will not cause histamine dumping.

Hey Ralph! You seem so energetic. 😁Perhaps your body is putting that protein to good use and your muscle mass is slowly growing. It's early days yet. In the beginning, there's a lot of experimentation required to see what works or what doesn't work for you. Regular household scales cannot really tell us what weight is shifting or how, so they are very unreliable. Many people, including myself, have had to learn to have patience and to allow the body to adjust at its own pace. For me, weight loss is incredibly slow, but I don't have much to lose. I've noticed that weight loss becomes very consistent the stricter I do this diet. When I add things in, especially plant things, I get stomach problems and my weight fluctuates. If the same is true for you, that may mean eventually finding an alternative to your mustard solution, even though I know the cramps can be annoying! (With exercise and cooler weather, my legs are restful, but when it's hot and humid and hard to exercise due to the heat, they are restless. I hope cooler weather and increased movement helps you, too!) I don't know what it is, but even the most seemingly innocuous addition of a plant can throw your results off. Some people suggest stopping dairy, or lessening it, so if you're having that, it's another thing to consider. You'll be able to find what works best for you, so please be patient and in the meantime, and don't pay too much attention to the scale, especially not if you are improving in numerous other ways!

Calories still matter even on carnivore for weight loss but it does not seem like you are having an over abundance of calories. I would just make sure you are are weighing yourself under the same conditions when you do weigh, same style clothes, same time of day, same eatting times before weigh ins. Also, I personally would not focus on weigh often because of weight fluctuations due to water shifts based on intake/loss or even increased salt intake from spices. I would based success more on how you are feeling and loss of inches. Maybe a once a week weight in is all you need

Just want to echo others that suggested electrolytes! I use the Keto Chow electrolyte drops from Amazon, no sweeteners added. I add to cold or hot water. At first, the water then tasted “flat” after adding the electrolytes. My daughter suggested I pretend that I’m drinking milk - and it worked!! Now I honestly only enjoy drinking my water this way. Muscle cramps are now very rare for me 😊

I'll have to look up the Keto Chow. I have some of the product from LMNT. The premade LMNT in the can was a little different, but not bad. I got used to it pretty quick. Kind of like a non sweet, salty soft drink. I tried one of the packets that you ad to water. It seemed too salty to me in 16 ounces, but If I add it to 32 ounces it seems about right and I should be drinking more water anyway. Thanks for another great comment.

Stool - Everyone is different. May stop after a week, a month or even 3 months. Add cheese if you're doing the dairy version. Cramps - Intake more magnesium and electrolytes. Weight - Do not weigh yourself every day. Weekly at most. But most people on carnivore say don't look at scales, look visually. Some have gained weight but went down in size. Take a photo every 2-4 weeks and compare. In the end, you're going to get a lot of responses and recommendations. Whatever you do, just stick to it at least for 3 months and then go from there based on the end results. Good luck. I've started back up myself.

I have been on the diet for 7 or 8 months. Down over 80 lbs. To lose the weight I eat one meal a day. A large meal of fatty meat. Then I go without eating until the next day. I drink lots of water and take a potassium and multivitamin daily. Your liver and pancreas are recovering right now and takes months to adapt to the new diet. Don't give up. A big change is just around the bend. It really is an amazing diet. The fat is the secret to satiety. You will have diarrhea but the liver and (gall bladder if you have one) will catch up. Then the fat will digest better and absorbed and now will be used for energy. So take care of the liver. No drugs or alcohol and no carbs and the liver will heal.

I did a low carb diet last year from December to February and lost more than 40lb in less than 3 months with intermittent fasting, 2 meals a day and one or 2 hours of exercise bike every day, started from 208lb, went down to less than 153. But then my dad got ill, he's been diagnosed with leukemia, then in March my daughter found out she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and needed surgery, so I had to halt my diet in order to take care of my beloved ones and my life become a mess. Now both of them are healthy and doing ok, but I'm back at where I was before starting the diet, due to eating disorder, huge stress and not exercising almost at all. I tried to get back on the low carb diet and failed, I tried keto and failed; now I'm on my 7th day on carnivore and intend to hold on strong. I'm 54, 6.3" and was weighing 201lb before starting the carnivore diet. I lost 8lb in the first 3 days (now weighing 193) then I stalled but I'm not overly worried about that. I can share some advices from my past experience if you don't mind. In the beginning you will tend to undereat, that's wrong, you have to pay attention to how much you eat and also what you eat, not every piece of meat or fat is good for the weight loss. I'm eating beef with fat on, but I can't really eat ground beef for example, my body tells me I can't take it. I also eat some bacon but only once in a few days, I also can't eat too much of it. I eat a couple eggs and some butter with salt on once in a couple days or less. I ate sardines and some chicken drumstick. I started with 2 meals a day but my body was not happy so I went to OMAD and I feel much better. I don't eat dairy anymore, I love cheese so much is my fav food but they will cause me cravings and they also contain a certain amount of carbs which will raise your insuline level, you want to avoid that. I experienced the loose intestine in the first 4 days but then it went away, no dairy, no loose stool. Don't drink too much coffee, it's washing the liquids away from your body and dehydrates you. One coffee with butter or heavy cream in the morning should suffice to have you started. Don't eat sweeteners, will cause you to have hunger pangs, cravings and produce insuline peaks even if you don't eat carbs. Cramps are due to lack of minerals. Water weight loss is washing away your electrolytes. Eat enough salt and seasonings, you need to keep your electrolytes in check with all the water and fat you lose. I am also drinking keto electrolytes supplement, a small sachet a day in half liter of water. You might experience nausea, fatigue, brain fog and loss of energy in the beginning, all this is due to the process of ketosis when the body switches fuel from carbs to protein. It will pass, you just need to hold on, but you will feel awful for a while. If you can't exercise, walk, at least a mile daily, slowly but walk. If you can't, then step in place in your home for 15 minutes or more. This helps to keep the metabolism active. Some people will try to exercise to much, this will build muscle which weights more than the fat they lose and will make the scale to show weight gain. Some people will also tend to drink too much tea or too much water, don't strain your body, drink the necessary, 1,5l up to 2l is ok but if you can't, is not a big issue for a day. I know people who went into carnivore and gained weight initially then stalled for a couple months before starting losing. I know people who started losing weight only after 90 days. Every person is different, everyone have their own health conditions that might have an impact on the weight loss. The most important thing is the mindset. The stress is producing cortisol which will block your weight loss and make you feel terrible, sleep is very important for the weight loss, try to sleep as much as you can, don't stress yourself about the scale. I know it's easier said than done, but atm I'm in the same position, no weight loss in the past few days, it's easy to let yourself being disappointed and dejected, but you need to keep strong and positive. The weight will eventually get off.
@RalphKnowsCarnivore9 күн бұрын
Thank You for the awesome response. You have a lot a great suggestions and insights. I know what it's like to fall off a diet after losing a lot of weight. You tend to feel a little guilty. You have a hard time getting back to doing the things you did before that were successful. Stressful situations don't help. But, it sounds like things are going a lot better now. When I was intermittent fasting, I had a lot of success. I did a lot of OMAD, and a lot of every other day. Even a few 3 day and up to 10 day fasts. I discovered that anything over 3 days really takes a lot out of you physically and mentally. However, being married to someone who did not need to loose weight, made it tough. Since it's hard to cook for one, she often was eating frozen dinners by herself. After drifting away from fasting, I really couldn't see myself going back to that. I still do a lot of OMAD, but it's really not because I am intentionally doing it. Since starting carnivore, I find that I am just not hungry during the day. When dinner comes, it's easier for me to have a meal with my wife, because she is just eating the same meat that I am, just with side items. It gets a little tricky at restaurants, but nothing I haven't been able to figure out. My biggest challenge with meals is probably not eating enough meat and probably not enough fatty meat. It would be easier if it was just me, but I try to provide variety for my wife, which means more chicken and leaner meats than I would like sometimes. You made a good point about coffee. I know I drink way too much coffee. I usually have it with a little bit of heavy whipping cream. I need to be drinking more plain water and less sparking water.

Don't use a scale to evaluate your progress, use a tape measurer around your waist. That's because it's more reliable, the scale doesn't know whether you lose or gain water, fat or muscle. I recommend using google docs or an excel spread sheet and in the first column you enter weekdays Monday through Sunday. Check your waist every morning and enter your data in the next column of the spreadsheet. Highlight the entire column to check for weekly average and then start over again next week. If your circumference isn't shrinking you're eating too much. Simple and plain.

Hey Gary, I find that I often "accidently intermittent fast". By that I mean, I just don't feel like breakfast, and usually not even lunch. I might start getting hungry by late afternoon, but by then, I might as well just wait for dinner. So I find myself at the end of the day in an OMAD situation. Even at one meal a day, I often don't even have that big of a meal. Perhaps with the concentration on protein, my body just isn't feeling the need to eat much. I don't even find myself craving all of my old favorites.
@Healthy-Golden-OldieАй бұрын
It takes a while to overcome the insuline resistance. If you consume a load of proteins, you might be going into gluconeogenesis. Your liver makes sugar from proteins. Sometimes even proteins from your muscles. As long as your morning blood sugars stay relatively high and your ketones low, go lower in proteins and up your fats. Eat enough calories to not slow down your metabolism. Don't forget to adequately hydrate and to take your minerals. The loose stools might be coming from your gallbladder not working properly, so you can't digest fats very well. In that case, go off carnivore for a while and eat keto. Ad some fibre to your diet by eating avocado, asperagus, leafy greens, broccoli and such. Take Tudca in between meals and have bitter herb supplements like milk thistle, artisjoke, dandelion. Also NAC can help to support your liver. Lower your coffee intake, as coffee can irritate your bowels and cause a histamine reaction. The cramping is a result of not having enough minerals. When carnivore, your body doesn't hold on to fluid like you would on a carb diet. Hence the need to supplement with minerals, which on carnivore get peed out more than before. To educate yourself on carnivore diet, I find the KZbin channels of a.o. doctors Ken Berry and Anthony Chaffee very helpful.
@RalphKnowsCarnivoreАй бұрын

An electrolyte imbalance can cause cramps. I use a pinch of Himalayan salt in water each morning. Some Himalayan salt or Redmond's salt are both great. If you drink too much coffee you will deplete the electrolytes which will cause cramps. Too much water will cause an electrolyte imbalance as well. I put a grain of two of Himalayan salt in my water and coffee. Research electrolytes. Also a good book is The Salt Fix. Dr James DiNicolantonio the author, has also done some good interviews on KZbin. Electrolytes (salt) are crucial. Salt in water forms electricity. Our whole body including cells, heart and other organs are electrical. When you disturb the electrical current by depleting the electrolytes you get cramps.

Hi Debbie. Thanks for the very insightful answer. I will try to look up Dr DiNicolantonio on KZbin and / or find his books. I wonder if the lack of salt, ( and the electricity it produces) could be the reason my smart scale doesn't always give me a read out for things like Fat % or muscle mass?

If you still have runny stool cut back on the fat eat leaner cuts, cramps mustard or Dill Pickle juice helps as a quick fix but you need a quality electrolyte solution. good luck

Great suggestions. I've always used mustard for the cramp problem, but I can see where pickle juice would work too. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks.

Have a high-quality salt likeRedmonds?
@RalphKnowsCarnivoreАй бұрын
I usually have just used a standard Kosher salt, but when I am out, I will probably start looking for Redmonds.

I see no one mentioned thre the coffee try and cut down the cups per day , it appears your snacking breakfast,lunch , dinner ?? 3strips bacon for breakfast ?
@RalphKnowsCarnivoreАй бұрын
I probably do drink too much coffee. Sometimes in the morning I will just have bacon because it's easy (the microwave) and I feel that I should have something, but I don't always feel like putting in the effort to cook eggs. Some mornings I feel rushed to get out of the house, and other mornings I'm just in survival mode because I was up till 3 or 4 am editing video. Many days, I don't even do breakfast or lunch. I don't know why, I just don't feel the need. Since cutting out sugar, I don't seem to have cravings anymore.

Kudos Ralph. Used Keto 2015 and have some tips. Cramps - had them until I cried, not funny. Take Magnesium supplement, every other day Pottasium(if you have heart issues, check with xour dr abot pottasium), but Mg is a must. Also salt secretion is much higher in Keto (and Carnivore is extreme Keto), so dont be stingy on salt. Drink up Beef broth, or just teapoon of salt in water. That will help with cramps but with low blood pressure too (you'll get to a stage where you will feel dizzy becasue of low blood pressure, becasue Kidneys are getting rid of too much salt so Spddium Pottasium pump in the cell memrane works differently. Stool - usualy one has issue with Obstipation aka Constipation (Magnesium helps with that). Soft Stool is unavoidable sometimes, its usualy becaseu of too much FAT to Protein ratio with no fiber around. In my case if I add some salad with vinegar stool gets soft. Be mindfull of Protein intake - not to much, youl feel bad and foggy, but also not too little, becasue of stool and you need building blocks for your muscle. Now lets address elephant in the room, sarcopemnia. With any weightloss you cant avoid muscle loss, littl eo r a lot, depending on person and food. There is direct link with lofe longevity, health and movability in old age with quantity of muscle. Please please excersize, I am talking about resistance excersize, ask your dr about testosterone suppllementing and build your muscle while you can, during and esspecialy after weight loss, so you have smth to give "old age to chew on", becasue how much of it it has, thats how long you will live quality life. If you can read and watch Dr Volek and Phinney videos. Book www.amazon.com/Art-Science-Low-Carbohydrate-Living/dp/0983490708 . Take care and Greetings from Croatia

That's a statement I think you would only hear on carnivore. lol I think you're right.

I think you're over-analyzing the situation with the weight gain and your concerns about shutting down your own metabolism. It's probably just _water weight_ coming back when it's that much weight so fast. How could it be possible that you've gained 2lbs in a day eating so little? That's impossible unless you have a thyroid condition or some other rare disease. -You mentioned salt, and salt helps your body absorb water. When you have a dehydrated patient you give them water with salts/electrolytes through IV drops. The salt has caused you to reabsorb the water-weight that you lost from cutting out carbs. While it seems that you're eating very little that's okay as long as you're feeling fine and have energy and your body temperature is good. When I skip out on meals for too long today I begin to freeze. For me that is a sign that my body is starting to conserve it's energy and that I should go eat. Slow and steady wins the race. Keep tracking your progress. You've got this. Good luck!
