WEEK IN THE LIFE OF AN OR NURSE

Welcome back to my channel!!! I know its been a minute BUT-
I am so excited to get to show you what my typical work week looks like!
I show you the hustle and bustle of what an OR room looks like, what my role as a RN in an operating room means day to day, and even some nitty gritty gut pictures from one of the surgeries I helped with this week! Ahh!

I’m recently graduated and just wanted to say, if that’s how you feel about your student you should tell them that! Most of the time we are nervous, and trying our best. When I’m nervous I do more than I probably should to seem not nervous.. and I genuinely don’t want to get in my preceptors way and be the reason for their bad day. So if they felt like that, I would have appreciated them telling me. 😊😌 we were all students once, gotta start somewhere!!

that wasn't unkind, what she said. It was her experience. And as an experienced nurse, she also knows that the student needs to have practice doing things that they aren't good at, yet. Its just the reality that HAVING to teach can be tiring. It doesn't mean she's a jerk to her student. She's just expressing that teaching can be challenging too, especially when its been a long day.

I usually say hey just a heads up I’m slow. I will be happy if you briefly explain. If you’re in a rush go ahead and do the skill but please allow me to watch to the best of your ability. Usually the nurse will go ahead and do what they need to do but I just want to let them know to me it’s not a slap in the Face If we can’t do it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Its good to give the students some tasks, so they can feel like they got to do something, and feel successful at the tasks, this builds confidence. Rather than complain about them. Everyone starts out at the beginning and was once a student. A great preceptor remembers this.

Really loved your video!! I’m a Preceptor and you gotta be careful of who you share your frustrations to.. you never know who’s watching videos like this. I know sometimes us OR RNs can be a little blunt, we like structure and when it comes to surgical procedures sometimes you don’t have time to think about how things might come off to a new nurse. But you can also make someone feel like a burden and quit before they’ve even started. When you take the role as a preceptor, that’s something you gotta be cautious about when accepting the position. Rant to friends, someone who’s confidential, get your frustration out, and then get back out there with the weight off your chest!!

As a nursing student, doing my capstone with a preceptor, you need to remember, you were once a student too. You once had no clue what you were doing and were just trying to learn.

I too work in the OR. It’s good to get it out what OR Nurses actually do. I know there are people who think we sit around and talk all day. It’s an incredibly physical, emotional draining job at times. Love it and have been there for 19 years!! We are basically there to advocate and keep our patient safe.

I'm a 16 year RN. You run and run. You'll ask out, "y'all told me this case was checked!" As you run again to get something. You have to think fast and prioritize. Be prepared. It's hard, physical labor. I loved it. It was wrecking my body. My husband begged me to work somewhere else that would be kinder to my back. I didn't want to leave. I was damn good at my job. I trained some great nurses, too. We had a top notch spine team. When my husband and myself needed spinal surgery, I felt completely comfortable with the team in the room.

Most of the time the circulator is sitting around... only stressful part is on your back if you're scrubbed in standing next to the surgeon. It's definitely not as stressful (mentally, emotionally and physically) as the surgeon who's also standing and actually doing the surgery. Also, once you get used to where all the instruments are in the OR, it's not that hard.

You were once a student too! It’s always good to use your communication skills. I just graduated and it sounds pretty selfish to express of a learning nursing student that they are “on your way”. Maybe give them other tasks or politely say something for they won’t be on your way.

Thanks for sharing. As a new grad and recent student RN, i try to learn, keep quiet and ask questions. Never forget that YOU were once a student nurse and new grad with little to no knowledge, it can be overwhelming id assume. But try to look at things through the student's perspective as well

YES. This is absolutely what I am hoping to see when I search for "Day in the life of [insert career here]". Thank you for sharing your feelings, thoughts, routines, work environment, etc...and I realize that many people are worried about HIPAA when vlogging but there is nothing wrong with talking about what you did in general throughout your day. A day in the life of a [nurse] is just disappointing if there is nothing about nursing in the video 🙃 but you nailed it and took the time to tell us about your job. THANK YOU!

Honestly, this video was exactly what i was looking for. I get the whole thing about work becoming sort of mundane for you. And i know you’re limited due to privacy. But i like the idea of everyone working as a team in the OR rather than each nurse on the floor that is left for dead with 5 to 6 patients charting like a mad person and passing meds... thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

I never found it mundane. Yes, I did a lot of the same things, but I found each case different. I was in spine 3 days a week. The other 2 days could be anything. I liked that too because it kept me current

@@quelquun2018 Honestly? No. I would tell any new nurse to work one year on a med surg floor. You'll get a good, sound base for meds and the basic disease processes. This will really help you in the end. After one year, then start putting in your transfer orders. The time will fly. Where I worked, we did moderate sedation cases. There was no anesthesia person sitting at the head of the table. It was a RN. We put the monitors on and did the documentation. We gave the IV meds and coordinated with the surgeon. This is where that med surg comes in. Before the surgery, as you're going over the chart, you would recognize, like, if your pt has COPD, you'll know to not flood them with o2. You'll understand what's going on if they have ESRD. I have chatted with other OR nurses and they didn't do moderate sedation cases. It's up to you and where you live. There's so many specified fields for you. I lucked up early finding my niche and I didn't leave. Good luck!

Thank you so much!! I think the best way you can be a preceptee is by asking questions in the moment of curiosity. Otherwise the question usually gets forgotten or isn’t as easy/clear for your preceptor to explain later.

I do have struggles sometimes about the timing to ask questions because i feel sorry to ask when my nurse is busy doing stuff or charting or I don't want to ask in front of the patient, so I mark down my questions on my little notebook and ask them at the earliest convenience. And you're absolutely right, I still tend to forget to ask some of the questions even though i wrote them down! I also realize reading the chart more carefully will already answer a lot of questions. So I try to arrive earlier before my shift to really read into detail of the patient's history and their procedure, so that I can save time for more valuable questions😂

Would your orientees wanna be interviewed at all during the day? Or your coworkers? Maybe interviewing some and asking them questions about what they like/dislike about OR nursing/travel nursing. I’m assuming talking to surgeons for these videos is out of the question? 😂

I just accepted a position in the OR straight out of nursing school! I could not be more excited! For all those nurses having trouble getting into the OR (new or experienced), that sucks.. where I live there is a huge need and I could have had my pick of many different ORs. They love new grads. I will get to scrub and circulate, do inpatient and outpatient surgeries, adults and peds… I am super intimidated by the learning curve, but I think it’s going to be amazing. Thank you for the great content! I don’t start for a few months, so any resources you recommend for self-study? I have heard that Alexander’s Care of the Patient in Surgery is good.

There are some differences between pediatric surgery and the rest. The room will be warmer. The differences in the dosages of marcaine. Look up the differences between pediatric surgery. Once the child is over 100 lbs, the changes slowly go back to normal.

@@tracygunit2 I’m in a new grad residency program in Texas. I have to take 10 weeks of a didactic course before I get a preceptor in the OR. Once I get a preceptor it’s another 10 weeks of training before I’m on my own. But I have heard at other hospitals in my area that want nurses with bedside experience.

@@tracygunit2 Where I live there's a lot of new grad residency programs for the OR. Employers for the most part are going to prefer an experienced OR nurse, because they have to invest a lot into training nurses who haven't worked in the OR before - peri-op 101 is usually 6-9 months. That goes for new grads as well as experienced floor nurses, because there isn't necessarily much overlap between the skills you use on the floor and the skills you use in the OR. But everyone has to start from zero, right?

Also, you may as well just tell them next that you don't want a student instead of getting annoyed at them. Someone had to teach you and be patient with you bc you didn't know anything at one point in time. Stay humble and never forget where you started.

I’m 20 yrs old. I recently got accepted into a prestigious nursing program with a scholarship. I want to become an OR nurse. My original dream was to become a surgeon. I had that dream until my junior year of HS. I was talked out of it. I was at a lose for awhile then pursued nursing so I’m about a year behind. I’m waiting for my white coat ceremony right now. During my time off I’ve taken the time to get myself in a hospital as a PCA and I’ve learned so much working alongside doctors and nurses as well as other hospital staff. I am also pursuing EMT school very soon just because I think I’d really enjoy doing that. I have a lot of time off before school starts so that’s why I’m doing EMT school. I’m a learner so taking classes and getting certifications is so rewarding for me. My problem is..I’m scared of completely switching my major to pre-med. I think about it a lot but I do also love nursing as well. I feel like OR nursing is going to be good for me but I always have this thought in my head about quitting all my hard work that I’ve put into nursing and just saying “f it let’s go to med school” Question for OR nurses…do you love your job? Why should I choose OR nursing over med school? I am also contemplating on Wound care nursing. I am on my hospitals skin committee and I love it. When I get the chance, I always watching the WC nurses take care of patients on my floor. This sounds silly but it’s kinda like surgery in a way (but it’s really not lol) just being able to fix/tend to wounds is amazing to me. I also LOVE to see the actual anatomy of a human in person (since Im always learning about it through textbooks and pictures)

That’s so amazing! You sound very passionate about education and people so you can’t go wrong in whatever direction you choose. I personally enjoy my job because it’s not as intensive and extensive as going the pre-Med route but still having plenty of exposure to surgery. But I even have to remind myself that what I’m doing now is just a season and we can always change our minds a hundred times throughout our lives. So maybe see what this season of nursing has for you and if it’s not fulfilling in the way you’d like, pursue the next season. The great thing about a nursing degree is it’s soooo diverse and always in need. So congratulations on already accomplishing that! It’s definitely not a cake walk!

I'm a nurse really like to work in OR but with no luck. I worked Medsurg/tele 2.5 years, applied for OR position gazillion times but with no luck. Due to frustration, I looked for another position and came accross job posting in PACU and got hired. I work in PACU now for 5mos, currently enjoying it but I still have the urge to work in OR. I don't know why, but I got denied for OR position, not even a single for interview.

Thank You for sharing. My girlfriend is an OR Nurse and doesn't talk much about work. Shares she has to chart but comes home very exhausted now she is on a rotating shift that starts at 1:30 pm to 10 pm and had surgery after 5 pm. I'm very proud of her. How many surgeries a day do you do?

It depends on what kind of surgeries are scheduled in that room for the day. Yesterday I had 5 cases in my 8 hour shift, some days I only have 1 really long procedure.

I enjoy learning about all the things our bodies are capable of doing and the very hands on work. I super dislike difficult surgeons/coworkers. But that’s everywhere you work. Hours can range depending on inpatient versus outpatient. Usually there are 8,10,12 hour shift options.

@@stephaniepena8952 Ask about call 👏🏽 you may be expected to take a LOT of call depended on seniority. Ask what opportunities they can offer you to grow- whether through certifications/education AND pay wise. What is their work culture like? What were the primary reasons they need to fill that position? Are they having frequent turnover? If so, how come? I know you just need to get your foot in the door to get experience but don’t forget that they need YOU too. Why do they deserve to be added to your resume? If you’re bold enough, ask THEM for 3 references of current staff members. Hope this helps!!

Do you have to take call? Do you work four ten hour shifts or does your schedule vary. Do you switch between robot, general, and other specialties (ie: outpatient) or do they specialize you. Or does it just depend on your hospital. I am interviewing for an OR position and not sure what questions to ask... TIA

Those are all great question to ask in your interview since each facility is different! Yes you have to take call, there are usually 4 10 hour shifts as well as 5 8’s and 3 12’s. Yes you’re expected to be well versed in multiple specialties enough to be helpful in all of them. Some places do their best to keep you in your specialty but if you know how to circulate, read a preference card and ask for help- you should be able to circulate anything. Best of luck!!

We were trained to circulate and scrub in Colorado but are traveling now. We have been asked to scrub while traveling occasionally but if there is a CST in that specialty, they’re obviously preferred.

I worked closely with a coworker who is Type 1 and manages just fine 👍🏽 everyone’s different and definitely talk with your doctor and managers of the unit!

Most places do not have their RN’s scrub but where I was trained, we were interchangeable with Scrub Techs and did not have an option to opt out of scrubbing.

The most stressful times at my job are when the patient doesn’t respond well to surgery or surgery doesn’t go to plan and you have to adjust really quickly to a whole new situation.

It’s soooo minimal compared to the floor. Depending on how quick and back to back your cases are scheduled for, in my opinion- it is so much more manageable/preferred.

No you don’t have to stand all day. But depending on the neediness of the procedure (or surgeon 😉) you could be on your feet quite a lot.

What the difference between an OR nurse and an RNFA?

An OR RN does not usually have another type of certification, aside from CNOR maybe. But a Registered Nurse First Assist is exclusively scrubbed in to assist the surgeon and the surgery. They’re trained/certified to help make incision, suturing, clipping, ligating, almost everything on the sterile field.

@@ronishagardner2255 I personally don’t think you necessarily need to put yourself through the horrors of med surg to do the OR. Especially if you know that’s just where you are going to end up for a very long time. However, if you’re unsure of the OR there’s a whole set of nursing skills there that don’t really translate well going back to floor nursing. Hope this helps!
