Folsom is an actual prison he did a concert at. He is singing as a point of view from a prisoner who can see a train near by and wishes he was a Freeman riding on that train.

The total meaning of the song is right there in the lyrics.... "I know I had it coming. I know I can't be free. But that train ust keeps a rollin' and that's what tortures me." The train is a constant reminder of all he has lost.

About Folsom is the name of the prison and I think there's a train that ran next to it so when you hear the train coming and made him think about what he done and what they were enjoying on the outside while he was sitting inside that's what I got out of it but I could be wrong too

Johnny Cash was a Morse code intercept in the Air Force. My father was the same in the Army. I was a Morse code teletype intercept in the Army. They would give us a group of letters and tell us to look for the message. Didn't matter that it said nothing they wanted that combination. On March 5, 1953 Johnny was copying Morse in Germany and picked up the message. He was the first person in the free world to know that Joseph Stalin, leader of communist Russia during World War II, had died. Everyone says Johnny's music had the rhythm of train tracks. I've always thought it was the rhythm of well sent Morse code.

Folsom Prison is a very tough prison. This song is not a metaphor for life. It is a convict blues song. Very straight up , no hidden meaning. The singer killed a man and is going to spend the rest of his life in prison. He has accepted his fate, he knows he deserves it. But the railroad is just outside the prison grounds and he can hear it fro his cell. It reminds him that he is not free and will never be able to ride that train aware from Folsom Prison. He just wishes they would move the train further away so he can’t hear it. Johnny used to play concerts in Folsom prison for the prisoners. They loved him. He said once that but for the grace of God, he could have been one of them.

He’s sitting in Folsom prison serving time for murder, Folsom is the name of the prison, listening to the train whistle coming from outside. He’s thinking on his crimes. He’s thinking on who is riding on the train, rich folks who can go anywhere they want. Johnny is angry and sad. He knows he did wrong but imagines being free and riding that train far away to a new life.

There's a train nearby, and every time he hears the train's whistle it makes him sad and angry thinking of the rich people riding that train while he's locked up. And the last verse is saying if he ran the train he'd move the tracks so as not to torture anymore prisoners.

Folsom prison is a prison in California the train is a metaphor for time it keeps moving a long no matter what and he’s in prison and can’t do anything to stop the change that’s happening outside he also says in the song that the fact that everyone is still out living their lives is what tortures him so I guess the fact that he has no control over his life anymore or free will but the world keeps turning is his real punishment not just being in Folsom prison. Also blues could mean two things in the title it’s either the type of music or literally Folsom prison blues as in county blues the prison clothes
