I started making this, finished the circuit and messed up on the coils. So I grabbed some solar panels from some old outdoor solar lights and just connected those. The panels are the size of my remote, and I need a flashlight to shine at them to get enough power, so I added a USB cable. It works, but now I gotta be on my computer to change the channel haha

Have you ever used a push button lighter? The piezo in that creates electricity by compressing quartz. You would have to increase the motion of the button a lot for this to work, but you could translate the motion of the button to a gear running a small magnetic wheel... It isn't hard to think of ways to generate the electricity, it's a question of how much you need and then making that amount.

We've seen presentations lately on wireless light switches that are self powered. Pushing the button generates the power the circuit that signals a relay connected to the fixture. Somebody needs to find out how the switch produces power and make a remote like *that*. Shoot, that would make a great wireless X-Box controller! You'd have to push a little harder on the buttons, but with an adequate capacitor you'd be golden!

I don't think it would be a great idea with the Universal Remotes, because if the caps get drained completely, the remote losses power. Then you would have to go and input again your codes for the TV, DVD, Cable box., ect... everytime.

its old technology where kinetic energy is converted into the electrical energy, to with the help of the transducer(here is magnet and coile) the energy generated then stored in the capacitor the same energy is fed to the remote controll... it has lots of advantages : no battery required nature friendly, dis advanteges : while shaking its possible that we may drop the remote and lose it ,there always a chance of wear and tear and may require frequent servicing of this equipment

remote control is for a lazy people o someone how wanted to make life easyer..why should i put aplastic tube in a side of my rc and shake it every time to use it? :D i think a better way to use it, is to put that kind of generator into some kind of sport radio... while running the generator will generate just enoth power for listening to your fm.. think about it..:)

That would be great for an iPod/iPhone charger... just gotta hack a 30-pin connector, maybe add a transformer. Sounds like fun! Maybe you could make a slightly smaller one and tape it to your ankle or shoe or something, charge your iPod while you run with it. Cool stuff.

Hey Unicorn how good are you with electronics? What you want is basically the same as a stun gun/taser or an ignition coil driver. So if you search for plans for either of them you should get a pretty good idea. The only thing is you need an understanding of circuit diagrams, electronic components etc

@lllllllRobot That realy depends on the capacitors and the controller, some capacitors can hold a charge for several days and even months. And it depends on the controller, if it uses power when it's not used.

It needs something to limit the voltage across the capacitors. A zener diode wired in parallel would be fine. Choose the voltage to be something that both the capacitors and the LDO can handle.

Hey, I have a question. If it was a universal remote wouldn't you have to keep reprogramming it because when you don't shake it its like taking out the batteries?? And it would usually lose its codes.

@123456789robbie A battery is something which makes electricity through a chemical reaction. A capacitor simply stores energy, which you are making with the magnets. So no, not a battery.

make sure your magnets go clearly out the coil becuase if you have the coil go along the wholetube then theres no change in magnetic field, therefore no electricity is being created.
