Coming from a white person this is an unpopular opinion but I agree with Leslie.. they shouldn't be cramming black history into one month, it should be taught throughout the course. Morgan Freeman said it best "You're going to regulate my history to one month? I don't want black history month. Black history is American history." I understand the point is to raise awareness about racial issues but Freeman also said "How do you stop racism? You stop talking about it." The bigger the deal that is made the more people are going to treat each other differently. Heck, I never noticed skin color or genders growing up.. my parents never had to tell me "We're all equal," I just knew.. but then once it was brought up that "I'm different from you" others made it an issue. But that's just my opinion and there's no one specific answer to fix the world.. this video just made me want to share my perspective.
@missfunkadilly8 жыл бұрын
Tori Farrell Agreed. Separating things out only emphasizes that there is somehow a difference, when there really isn't. It should all be taught at the same time, or rather mixed in to their appropriate historical time frames, instead of learning about 300 years of black American history in one month. It's ridiculous.
@beakatriu15578 жыл бұрын

@deaf-tomcat8 жыл бұрын
+Chelsea Cooper If a white person said that about a black or brown person, you're sure as HELL it'd be racist and that there'd be an uproar. Why? Because white people have a special kind of privilege that has given them more opportunity to prevail. If a disenfranchised person didn't invent something, it's not so much that they are stupid, but that they lack the environment and opportunity to invent something. The joke is funny because white people have CENTURIES of privilege afforded to them, and they still didn't invent something like the mailbox or hotcomb. (And yes, even if you are poor or disenfranchised in some other way- by gender, sexuality, religion, etc- you still receive privilege from being white. You can be both privileged in one aspect and oppressed in another. It's why queer white people still have privilege, from being white, even though they experience oppression for their sexuality.) Life isn't black or white.

Asians in the 60's were living in the same conditions as the poorest black folks in america, they could speak the language barely and still managed to get out of the ghetto's and right now are one of the most hard-working and highest earning minorities equal to whites. One of the best things I ever watched was the Eyes on the Prize series. Granted, we’ve learned more about some of the events, but it was still really powerful to watch. My sister was watching it for an African American Studies class. Her professor had actually been shot during the Orangeburg Massacre. I was so sad when I tried to take the class and that professor had to take a leave of absence to care for a family member. The replacement professor totally changed the style of the class from the original syllabus.
