Weekend Vlog | Luke’s Second Race Weekend | August 2020

It’s the second race weekend of the season at Donington Park and it’s a roller-coaster of emotions for team Cheers Ears with engines exploding, a LOT of over-taking on the track and a first trophy for the cabinet...and yes, there are a few tears!

We head to Donington Park for the second BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship race weekend of the season.
We join Luke the day after team testing at our accommodation - The Wood Loft apartment in Kegworth. We settle in and get our bearings in the town before meeting up with the AB Motorsport team “bubble” for a curry in nearby Castle Donington.
Saturday is qualifying day and Luke does really well to qualify 11th out of a field pf 43 cars! We take our places in the Paddock Grandstand for the first race but disaster strikes at the end of lap 2 when Luke’s engine blows out. He is safe but disappointed not to finish the race as he was hoping for a top ten place after starting in 11th.
Luckily, the next 2 races take place on Sunday so the amazing team at AB Motorsport replace the engine that evening.
We check out of the Wood Loft on Sunday morning and head back to the track for the final 2 races.
The finish position of Race 1 dictates where you start in Race 2 so Luke is at the back of the grid in 40th place (although there were 43 cars in qualifying, 3 of these were reserve drivers who only race if another driver is ill so the field for the actual races was 40 cars not 43....which we found out later!).
With nothing to lose and an opportunity to practise his race craft, Luke has an epic race and makes up an amazing 23 places to finish 17th. His achievement earns him the Driver of the Day trophy from the race sponsors, WASPP!
There are a few incidents in Race 3 but Luke still manages to make up some places and finish 13th overall.
We head home, tired but happy and looking forward to the next race at Silverstone in September.

A big hello from the Dopson’s and thanks for another brilliant vlog! We’ve not posted a comment for a while but wanted to let you know we still watch every vlog, every Sunday; it’s Len’s 50th birthday today and we still tuned in first thing - after presents of course! We have been crying with laughter this morning over the “adopting regional accents” rabbit hole. Len and I are both guilty of doing this - Worst time being when I was looking to move into a new flat about 25 years ago. The girls who showed me round had broad Irish accents and I couldn’t help myself…..it just took over! To my horror they asked what part of Ireland I was from…ohhh the humiliation! Have a great week!
