Soft life to me is daily, low stress, comfort where my needs are met without burden. I have a 9-5 and other things going on but, I do travel on occasion. I have a few luxury pieces. I’m in therapy. My home is peaceful. My phone goes on DND at 9:30pm. I’d say that I’m living a soft life within my means right now. My present version will change as my life changes.

At 61, I would define a soft life as one without chaos, confusion and drama in all of it's forms. Once those things are eliminated, you can focus on what really matters.

Thank you for speaking on this. I came across this hashtag last year and I’m not going to lie it changed my life. I just medically retired from the Army after 6.5 years. I went so hard for so long dealt with the angry Black woman stereotype among other things. I outshined my peers going from E3 to E6 in just 4 years of enlisting. Then one day I realized I had been going so hard for all my Soldiers, my peers, etc… but outside of success that I measured by hard work and promotion… who was I really and had I taken care of me? I made the decision to pursue a “soft life” which to me meant being intentional with where I place my time and attention. I’m 27 and 100% disabled it seems like a flex because the government pays me for the rest of my life but in reality I broke my body and mind down in the Army for an organization that cared nothing about me. So, to be soft and to have ease is a privilege for me that I already deserved but I definitely earned through my time in service. Soft life is what taught me to give myself grace, taught me rest is required and not earned. Taught me to take time and breath. Taught me this life isn’t a race but a journey. I’ma girl that loves the finer things, but soft life or not I was going to get that lol. But again I recognize my privilege. I recognize the performative nature we have been exposed to on social media. Some really honed in on the wellness side of soft life and others aligned this movement with Black Girls in Luxury. The two are not synonymous but can coexist. I think it is necessary for it to be represented on social media but in a more accessible light for sure. I 100% agree with the quote you recited about the soft life being an act of resistance! If we don’t give it to ourselves who will? That’s how I see it. Black girls deserve to be soft and to rest and to be at ease. It is the antithesis to Girl Boss and Hustle Culture for sure.

For me, living a soft life is giving rest to my ancestors who were not able to. Sometimes that rest is a nap, sometimes it's pausing to appreciate the blue sky, and sometimes it's enjoying an all-inclusive vacation where people are serving me!

"Can't be soft in a hard world". Wow. That was a strong quote. Life doesn't have to be all fight, struggle, and fatalistic. There needs to be balance. I hope that wasn't a quote from a really young person as it sounds like giving up on a soft life from the start. This has been an interesting discussion as I'd never heard of this "soft life" concept. I'm in my 60s, happy and have always lived a soft life concept within a get out there and study hard, go through a tough university, get into one's profession, juggle multiple positions, plan for early retirement life (accomplished in the mid-50s).,etc. Friends also did early retirements in their mid 50s and all African American, female and male. Friends and I have had a lot of soft life experience over many decades. I do what I like to do which for me is regular overseas travel which I've done almost annually and solo since I was a teen and back then it was with a low budget due to being a full-time university student. But, I still traveled overseas on part-time job student money. For me and friends, it's been about planning, setting goals, and accomplishing them while still working through this life. We only have one life on this earth and even when things get hard, as my nearly 100 year old, and still going strong, parent says, "It's not about the bumps in the road, but how one navigates the bumps." My parents provided a lot of soft life situations growing up. Plus, they had soft life situations from their parents. When one has lived as long as my parents and gone through Jim Crow, wars, segregated schools and universities, etc, one created mental soft life spots from childhood in order to survive. Sometimes, "soft life" is just blocking out all the external life noises for a while. I can turn off external noises in a heart beat and just relax. Greetings from Los Angeles

The last line “most important it’s about defining it for yourself” is so important on the topic of many things that impact us culturally and “soft life” is no different. Our problem today is people stand on their soapboxes and repetition makes them an authority on shi- they really know nothing about ie femininity, soft life. They purport their opinions as law… and at the core of this is the need to discover what it means for self… leave everything else on the cutting floor. For me self care is therapy. Honoring my body by way of rest and listening to when it’s saying no. Letting go of people, places, and things that no longer align. None of those things have anything to do with money. But I understand the notion that folks feel like they can’t because they don’t have money to do so… it’s something we have to unlearn!

I talk about this a lot on my channel-The Soft Life. The basis of it is how you treat yourself at any price point. Whether you pour your morning OJ in a wine glass or fly off to Greece, it’s all about prioritizing your needs, being gentle with yourself, celebrating small victories, and keeping your word to yourself. Most of that is free and it is a choice. Love this topic, sis.☁️

Hello Beautiful! I agree, there are so many ways for people to enjoy the "soft life" at their own level. My family was never the norm of my community (Eritrean). We would take a drive to just anywhere for fun. Found an out-of-the way ice cream shop in the middle of apple orchards when we were kids. As adults, going to a museum is part of that "Soft Life" it is about elevating our minds and our spirit. Travelling both near and abroad is a luxury we LOVE. We just value experiences more than the material things. And to be transparent, it also stems from the feeling of guilt when buying high-end expensive items when people "back home" are struggling with basic life needs. We just need to find the peace in our own lives and be gentle with ourselves. Cheers!

For me, the soft life is having the ability to buy time by outsourcing things like housework. Also, enjoying a dinner out with my family without worrying about the price tag. Sitting around the table talking, laughing and enjoying each other is priceless. Also, laying in my bed, reading, listening to music, sipping wine or tea without the pressure of going out with friends because I am now comfortable saying no. Lastly, buying more comfortable classic quality clothing that make me look and feel good over trendy clothes that I will soon grow tired of.

This might be a new # slogan "the soft life", but it's a state of mind and being that has always been available, and much more accessible today. To me it's all about ME making my life easier. Are there people that make my life harder -get away from them. Do I spend more than I make and then stress -stop it, do I let my house get out of control then on my days off I gotta clean instead of rest - learn discipline. Do I keep picking partners that take and take, and are abusive - get counseling to find out why. Basically it's about stopping ourselves from self-sabatoging. Life throws curb balls at all of us, but I'm not going to throw any at myself if I can help it. Your 100% that's it's not about money. A tub full of warm water and a drug store bubble bath and candles from TJ Maxx do just as well as a fancy hotel and overpriced designer bubble bath and candles. Basically if you living life to impress others with labels, you probably not living the soft life. It might seem that way on the outside, but inside??

I think the “soft life” becomes performative when the intention behind it is to look like what you aren’t or to look like you have what you actually do not. But those who are showing up as their authentic self, learning to listen to their intuition, advocating for themselves, and taking care of themselves are all cultivating a soft life, whether they are aware of it or not.

Ahh the soft life! for me the soft life is ease, a life where I don't wake up daily worrying. To be able to do the things we want without regret. We all have different wants and needs at different points in our lives, so I feel "soft" is different at each point and for each person. It's not a one size fit all thing.

Yes I see an hear about the soft life all the time. I like what the young lady said it’s ending the hustle life. Running your self in the ground, thinking that you have to work around the clock to be successful. Soft life to me is scheduling, planning taking time to take care of yourself, your health , mine body and soul . Get some sleep say no, laugh and have more fun.

It's the reading rainbow comment for me lol...and the self-check moment. ❤️ I am currently incorporating the soft life into my routine as well as being gentle with myself. And you are correct, Social Media make the soft life look unachievable and so far out of reach. However I am learning that it is not...soft life can be as simple as buying yourself flowers or taking a bubble bath with a glass of wine of course or just talking 5 minutes to center yourself. It's the little things that matters.

With regard to the comment about “can’t be soft in a hard world”. I interpret that as not making space to draw a boundary between the outside world and the world or space you create for yourself. To take the guard down. To be gentle with yourself. To just inhale deeply. For some, finding that time may be difficult but it doesn’t have to be 2-3 hours. 2-3 weeks. It could be 20 minutes. And while 20 minutes may not feel like enough, it could be the starting point. The catalyst to recognize you desire more time and to intentionally monitor your day to find pockets of time to increase the time you spend in your world. JMO

Love this call for community group think around “the soft life” - for me the soft life is: deep rest, stillness, tapping out to tune in (spiritually), detoxing, nothingness, keeping your time & energy sacred. However, I do understand why the self-care girlies are “performing” their soft life on the socials bc seeing is believing. Representation is a form of Manifestation. If we see “the soft life” we can see ourselves in that state of being! I just hope more of us decide to define that for ourselves and not feel the need to show our soft life to the world (& monetize it at every turn :-( 🌻🌻🌻

I think people have been either gearing up or already living a Soft Life, and was not aware of it...or called it something else. Before The Soft Life was even trending...I had a plan for my life...a peaceful,...calming life, minus any struggles. In that plan, my husband and I wanted to 1) see our kids graduate high school, further their education and/or careers, 2) we want to be debt free, 3) I want to retire within the three years and become a fulltime content creator, 4) relocate to Florida, and 5)Travel frequently. Self care has ALWAYS been in the equation...maintaining my health, working out, meditating, facials, massages, etc. Its how I keep my sanity! So at 45, I have accomplished somethings...and I am nearing "The Soft Life". Shoot your shot Preacha! I was so tickled! I really enjoyed this vlog!

But I do appreciate an awareness/reminder that is important to strive for, especially for Black women!! Pursuing “softness” is and should be subjective for each of us- if folks want to do so with buying Gucci bags or sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, whatever folks feel good about is how it should be defined👍🏾 😃

Was not familiar with the term “soft life” as discussed and I thank you for presenting the topic in your clear and succinct fashion. I am at a time in my life where I practice self care in everything I do and every day. I am filled with gratitude to be able to do nothing; to spend time checking in with my young friends to remind them to take care of self in the midst of challenging careers; to continue adding countries to see to the list of 60+ I have seen to date; to have friends (a village of amazing AA women) to share a meal, libations or just chatter; to have an amazing only child, who reminds me, “what have you done for “you” today; and most important to be me each and every day - living, loving and thriving with JOY! Can this be defined as the “soft life”? It sure is not a HARD LIFE!💕💕

Great topic/question! I personally don't read too much into the "soft life" presented on social media, because it can/is mostlikey over exaggerated and can appear unattainable. I have defined a soft life for myself, specially after the pandemic and that looks like working smarter and not harder (work and home), giving myself more grace and allowing my husband to step up more in all aspects, because I don't have to always be super women and I can still be a good mom by taking time to myself and being more at peace by giving myself the opportunity to not have to be so hard. All of this allows me to live more in my feminine energy and helps everything around me feel softer. My health, relationships and overall mental health has improved dramatically as a result.

I feel that the “Soft life” can be authentic and performative. However I think the performance aspect might be necessary in a way… sometimes you have to “fake it til you make it”. However, I do think that those faking the soft life are only tapping the materialistic surface of the true meaning behind the sentiment. I love that you said that the soft life for black women is like a point of activism and you went on to say you’re worthy to treat yourself with grace. I stand 10 toes down in agreement with that…that’s a word from on high for real! I’m actually planning an event in May called “ I AM WORTHY” that focuses on black women embracing their soft era. It’s kismet that you used that same phrasing 😊

I thin ppl get so worked up about what others are doing that they lose focus on how to define and care for themselves in a way that is healing, caring, loving etc. it doesn’t take much to show up and appreciate oneself.

What an interesting concept. The soft life can mean so many different things. I understand, based on your explanation, that it is a term targeted towards black women , but it is relevant to everyone. I will also agree that those who are living a soft life are not on social media making it a thing. Great video and topic.

Thank you for going more in depth into the origin of “soft life”. I previously thought it was just performative because I saw it used on social media. My mom often says I act “like a white person” because I practice self care differently than she does or how she was raised. The struggle runs deep!

Wonderful vlog, I’m doing 12 3 30 on the treadmill, it’s low impact but very effective because of the incline. I don’t weigh myself but I’ve lost inches off my stomach for sure.

28:46 💕 … living a “soft life” … never heard of it. But maybe my life has mostly been “soft” as I was never a hustler. At times I’ve been called “lazy” and I’m thinking, maybe, for others, it’s because I didn’t fit their “black girl hustle” stereotype 🤔 AND also there’s what some call “light skin privilege”, but that’s a whole other topic 🫣

Always great to hear your topics of discussion. The soft life to me means having complete control of my resources and my time; the latter being most important. Living in purpose every season of my life. If that occurs, with God at the center, ALL other things will follow. (Matthew 6:33) That’s soft for me. 🤎

Soft life is to you what you make it. I feel like when black women tap into something positive others want to bring negativity. Also my pov a lot of criticism are from ppl that don’t know how to define it for themselves, you gotta work on you boo. We already have enough noise from outside let me enjoy it- how I feel necessary

I am seeking and curating and practicing and imagining softness as part of my personal freedom. That, I believe is a necessity for me to uphold my responsibility for collective liberation. Like anything this requires a constant “check yo’ self before you reck yo’self” activity. To acquire the tangible aspects of adornment requires us to, in a way, be complicit in capitalism… and the truth is… we all are. I think guilt should be discussed here, because at least for me, I struggle with feeling that, while I do deserve… so many others do too… But not everyone even has their basic needs met… so there goes soft life. I guess, i feel soft life for Black women should be a right and not a privilege
