With regards to environmental factors, I heard about the connection with Mother and child… what about at the time of conception if the father was a heavy smoker and server alcoholic what impact would that have on the risk? Also what about passive smoke which a child might breathe in from their father - as a baby and during early childhood development? Has there been any research to confirm or explore that side of the genetics?

Broke out my teeth in prekindergarten due to running to a girl that babysat me who was on the jungle gym and landing my teeth on the bottom bar. Broke them out again swimming in a pool in high school not realizing how far the wall was and doing an underwater butterfly right into it.

It is so relieving to have a scientific source on ADHD, the causation and genetic control on scientific studies are key to stop spreading nonsense and I am so happy you take the time to revisit this. Thank you.

Thank you so much Dr B. I was very interested to head about the iron levels in the brain. I’m pretty sure I’ve inherited my father’s pernicious anaemia (along with his ADHD) and have had it for years but the symptoms have crept up on me so gradually I’ve only just realised. I’m sure it’s exacerbating my ADHD. I have an appointment with my GP next week and am so hoping they will take this seriously. As I’m a 73 years old woman they are likely just to blame it all on old age!

our brain needs iron and other substances to produce dopamine. If you have ADHD, your brain is trying to have good levels of dopamine in our brain. i understand that our brain produces all the dopamine it can trying that, so obviously we use a lot of iron and other substances. when taking methylphenidate or other medications that in some way help to have good levels of dopamine in the brain, the brain will only need to produce a little dopamine to maintain good levels in our brain, so we use less iron and other substances, increasing the concentration of iron and so on.

Hi Dr. Barkley, I find your videos so helpful in understanding my own brain, and in coming up with ways to offset the impairments of ADHD. I'd like to know what your take is on articles like the one from January 17, 2024 in ADDitute which states: "...we argue that a more accurate descriptive term is “variable attention stimulus trait” (VAST), a name that allows us to “de-medicalize” ADHD and focus instead on the huge benefits of having an ADHD brain." I find these kinds of ideas intensely frustrating as someone with ADHD, because I don't see any benefits to this at all, and I'd certainly rid myself of it if given the choice (it would certainly make grad school a lot more manageable to 𝘯𝘰𝘵 have ADHD), but I'd love to hear someone with expertise addressing it. Thank you again for your work!

The term was first used in a research paper decades ago wishing to relabel ADHD. It never caught on because it’s way to specific a symptom. Variability is a hallmark of ADHD but hardly its main or only feature, ignoring as it does all the rest of the symptoms, especially executive functioning. So fear not, such a proposal won’t go anywhere professionally and the DSM committee that works on ADHD will ignore it next time as it has before. Be well.

can you clarify if the people are on medication or not more often with the studies. for later videos.

That’s a good point. He stated in video that people who are on methylphenidate allegedly increase their brain iron levels compared to those who are not on the medication. But just like he mentioned, I’d also like to know the mechanisms behind that . Moreover know whether or not this study was sponsored/conducted by any specific ph.companies, which may or may not be disclosed

He usually puts all links in the description so we can check for ourselves @@IntegrityMeansAll I'd say he _usually_ mentions in the video if he finds any obvious conflicts of interest.

But octopuses have 8 legs. My teeth are a disaster- knocked out my front teeth on a seesaw when I was 10. Made a difficult adolescence even worse. 😮. Found a good dentist at 40 who finally gave me a nice set of gnashers.

Thank you, but how about prenatal alcohol exposure, is that just a correlation too or has it been shown to cause ADHD?
@IntegrityMeansAll
@IntegrityMeansAll 2 ай бұрын
I’d assume it have a (strong) correlation, also depending on the month of pregnancy and which organ of fetus was developed at the time as well as the amount consumed. I might not be specifically just ADHD though but other issues as well. You can’t necessarily definitely say something always causes it because often times you also don’t know whether or not the symptoms could be caused by other factors and you also don’t know if the consumption is accurately reported by the individuals. Let’s say a child has certain type of neurological issues and the mother is asked about her consumption of whatever substances during pregnancy she might not accurately answer the question. Maybe you’d have to gather the results of many different studies and examine them in terms of validity (as far as you can judge). I just listened to his entire video, he explained the correlation which apparently is not the case, he explained why (as genetic factors where dismissed)

I have ADHD and it runs in my family, my older brother has it too. Plus I was born 8 weeks premature at a VLBW (2.75 lbs). In late July 1989, state of California was amidst a mass spraying campaign of Malathion pesticide to combat the medfly. Coincidentally, the same week as they dumped a ton of this stuff over Los Angeles, my mom became ill and I was delivered via emergency C-section. It’s like I was destined for all the ADHD risk factors 😅

Dr. Barkley, respectfully mentioning, your video about Scattered Mind is biased and disingenuous. It was clear to me you either had not read the book, or had your own agenda to go against someone who speaks of you respectfully in his book. Since I decided to learn more about adhd, your videos and work have made me feel depressed , confused and even baffled. I just couldn’t understand why that was and why your claims were not adding up to coherent answers to a lot of my questions. They were not helping me I’m afraid to say. When I watched a couple minutes of your criticism on Dr Mate’s work I realized why that was. You’re the traditional medicine practitioner. Many psychiatric conditions require a holistic lens. As you know psychiatric medicines are some of the least effective treatments. I didn’t have to finish watching your video about Dr. Mate’s work because embarrassingly it was one false claim after another about Dr. Mate’s work. Please read the book and I am sure you will take off that embarrassing video. With all my respect to all your efforts to help people with ADHD I beg you to come down of your high horse and read the book written in 90s before claiming such words against somebody. My sincere apologies for my heated comment as I think it was much needed.
