I’m 53 and have just been diagnosed with severe ADHD. I’m here because you were recommended to me. You’ve no idea how much your information is helping, not just me, but also the people around me! Fascinating! Really interesting 👌 Thank you so, SO much 🙏😘 (I only wish I’d been diagnosed decades ago 😩 lol 😆) x

I have ADHD, was diagnosed as an adult, but had all the symptoms from first grade, and i developed asthma as an adult. Asthma runs in my family, but my parents have a "psychological issues are all laziness" mindset, so the only one with any diagnosis is my father. He was diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder (which i also have) which he was diagnosed with while he was trying to quit smoking at age 45. Edit: but I do remember hearing when I was diagnosed with ADHD that both asthma and allergies were more common in people with ADHD. I also know that whenever I have to take a course of Prednisone for a bad bout of asthma, my ADHD symptoms decrease and my energy levels improve dramatically.

Dr Barkley, have thought about making a video about what were the most significant changes in your approach to ADHD based on new knowledge and research in the last 10 years? I've watched a lot of your videos from 10-15 years back (like CADDAC lecture), and they are brilliant, but I was wondering if there are some concepts that since then you changed your perspective on, because of new research and experience.

I agree this would be a great idea. I have often seen people comparing his ten year old video to someone they prefer in the current year and are upset about some matter overlooked. So many advances have occurred in a few years, which is actually the main issue in ADHD treatment and the main reason I enjoy his weekly research review.

Hello Dr Barkley , Could you please do a video on relevant studies and the research community's take on impaired working memory in the context of ADHD? I have always been cognizant of my incredibly limited working memory, but now as PhD student I feel it's effect more profoundly than ever before, having gotten diagnosed as an adult.For me, it's like no matter how much you know about something or prepare ,when it comes to showtime or explaining concepts , the words JUST escape you .This also happens consistently in social interactions a lot. I have been a huge beneficiary of your content.

Hi ! About the first 2 studies, and what they made me think of (as a non scientist ADHD adult) : *1. [**0:32**-**4:12**] Asthma in children, social status & ADHD :* We have a bunch of old houses in France, and construction work/renovations are expensive. A lot of flats or houses are unlendable because they do not check the health obligations etc. Sadly, a lot of structures end up empty for these reasons. • Asbestos was used A LOT in construction during the 2nd half of the XXth century too, when it was more about building fast than healthy (especially from the 60s i'd say?). Big chunks of the country had to be Re-built post WW2 (destroyed or quarantined areas, and post-colonial remigrations, mostly). • If you are middle class, you'll likely be renting your place, and not have the money to move to a newer one (for big cities, that implies staying in social housing when you're eligible, thus in what usually is soviet-like building blocks). •If you own your land, you'd need a lot of money to renovate, and a (potential) new home to live in the meantime, which increases even higher what you'd own to the bank. Those are some correlations to increased risks of asthma in the global population already (+ pollution). Now if we add: • ADHD adults being most likely to struggle with their stable money (long term vision, spontaneity, unfinished projects, lower paying jobs, health issues...) • Genetics • Lower paying jobs in France's big cities being in suburbs, or poorer parts of towns and thus concentrated together (+ old polluting cars...) • The increasing loss of medical practitioners nationwide (including the government closing smaller hospitals, ER permanences...) • Trauma transmission ⇒ To summarize my view on that : Since ADHD children are more likely than non ADHD children to live and grow in poorer, more stressful and less healthy environments, of course they'd be likely to look like they have more asthma ? Especially since asthma can be a psychosomatic symptom of distress for children (as bellyaches, eczema or "restless behaviour" can be too). I'm no scientist though, and may very possibly be missing stuff, but it seems logical ? *2. [**4:13**-**7:45**] Pelvic floor pain in men with ADHD :* Could there be a link with hypermobility? I'm stopping the super long text here, have a good day everyone, and go drink water ! ❁

You can correlate owning a kettle with adhd for heaven's sake!
@jsonbourne9799
@jsonbourne9799 28 күн бұрын
Remember that correlation does not imply causation, so even if there were a statistically significant correlation between ADHD symptoms and kettle ownership, it wouldn't be clear if ADHD causes increased desire for kettles, or if having a kettle might somehow increase the risk of developing ADHD 🤣

Hi Dr Barkley rly nice reaserch about low economic status and astma. Around year of 3 i get astma, my parent dont know why, noone in my family have it. Family Doctor say that around year of 2 i have couple of alergies who poorly treated thats why it convert in astma around year 3. Low economical status in my family give me and my sister a lot of stress. Parents have many argue, we have many PTSD from this and toxic parenting. My life was rly low standard, later in life i begin to have stronger adhd symptoms when i get a lot stress from work and i dont know whats is wrong with me, 2 years ago i go to psychiatrist and i get diagnosed with very high accuracy i begun to take medication and work on symptoms. Now im 31, diagnosed at 29. My life is better than any before, my whole family dont know i have adhd, i tell tham and they see only excuse. Its funny because after that 2 years, everyone see that my adhd was not excuse simply because i become a lot more focused, organized person etc. Your videos is game changer. Sorry for my english is not me national language. A lot love for you Dr Barkley and this chanel community ❤

Dr. Barkley, do you have any comments regarding enlisting in the military when doing so requires 1 - 2 years off all ADHD medication? Additionally, do you have any insights that could benifit a soldier with ADHD during times of high stress and chaos, or in the quiet before the battle? Thank you for your life of constant contribution to the ADHD community. You are such a valuable resource and the world is better for your work and commitment.

Dear Dr Barkley… is there anything pharmacologically to be done about drug tolerance to stimulants? I initially had an almost complete remission of symptoms but for less than 2wk. Memantine revived the effect for a week which is my only clue. Praximexole, bupropion, lisdexamphetamine and methylphenidate all had a short but profound benefit, and if I break for a couple of months, I get a couple of days on restarting. I suspect I’m beyond the scope of what 2024 treatment can do for ADHD… there’s not much written on overcoming treatment resistance that I’ve found.

I don't have a solution for you sorry, but FWIW, it could be worth trying the other things that help with symptoms, while the medication is working. I find it much easier to meditate while the medication is working for example.

Dr. Russel, do you know any psychiatrist in Canada who is familiar with your ? Im on stimulants, and I feel like I need a dose adjustment/ change of med but i cant find anyone who takes me seriously. The last psychiatrist I spoke to told me if i really had adhd i wouldnt need a dose increase. Im not even at MRD for dexedrine and he thinks im abusing stimulants cause he knows i have a upcoming exam. I was diagnosed less than a year ago, and it was so liberating to know, all the challenges I have faced for the past 37 yrs were caused by adhd and not because im lazy or not smart but now im just being looked as stimulant abuser and its heart breaking. I dont have access to the doctor who did my initial assessment. ☹️
@kidwolfman
@kidwolfman Ай бұрын
Everybody processes(metabolizes) these meds differently so, besides the fact that these doctors are treating you horribly, that sucks. You can get a DNA test and they will give you a list of medications and how you would most likely process those meds. For instance- I process adderall very fast because I produce more of a certain enzyme than others. So although adderall works, I have to take much more than the typical person who takes it every day. I hope that makes sense, best of luck.

Try reading on your governments website, try mail universities neurosci-department. Mail mail mail!! Mail everybody! I’m still looking for one in another country and you got to know what your rights are as a patient, as a citizen and as a dysfunctial being. I haven’t found a stimulant that works either, I have turned my life around to eat, sleep, exercise better. Slow but surely less panic attacks, more realizing that even If I can’t be helped, I will not be helped by others enough that my life will be optimal - I gotta do that myself. I’m sorry to hear the treatment and the harsh judgement from others, it happens too much. You could have a look at Barkleys stages of grief / denial with ADHD. Eye opening.

I’m wondering about the subjects in the study by the way. If you’re having a healthy sex life, don’t make a big deal of it, maybe prude - would this be a less interesting study to enter? Could the subjects maybe exaggerate as some sort of coping mechanism? Are they maybe porn addicts that have no encounters but claim they do? Would past traumatic experiences in addition with therapist sessions affect the results? Stay safe out there, no means no and it’s a tango, not a breakdance.
