I'm listening to the sound of rules breaking... "Use fabrics of the same weight" - no. "Iron seams open" - no. And the result is that I am now less intimidated by cloth and feeling a wonderful freedom. Your piece is lovely and that brown, translucent silk is mouthwatering. Thank you for teaching us so much and so well Kathryn. I have learned so much from you in such a short time. Mary x

I’m coming to the belief that it was all the rules that made me think that I hated sewing. I think that you are right & it was intimidating, because I’m really enjoying this more free & creative type of sewing by Kathryn. I was just surprised (shocked!😂) to see what I was taught as hemming stitch (& hemmed quite a number of clothes using) used by Marion as a decorative stitch & also called “herring bone stitch”!

Hello K3n, I sincerely hope you get a chuckle from this comment. About 2 months ago your video's began showing up in my feed. At first I didn't click on any because your picture was so pretty, your posture so perfect: I perceived you as a perfectionist and that's not me. But when I finally did click and learned you had dreadlock beads and are a reformed perfect quilter, I was all in! My cover for this project is nearly done, my paper dyed and I have the first two prompts done. Will post on Instagram soon. And no more lamenting oldness. I'm 76 boo but live in a little Southern Calif beach town yea.

This was another lovely cloth tale, K3n! ❤❤❤ About 15 years ago, my quilt guild learned of the death of a local fabric artist. Her family invited everyone to go to her huge studio and take as much fabric as we could stuff into our vehicles. I was into Victorian crazy quilting as well as traditional piecing/quilting then, so I went home with enough fine fabrics to fill SIX large plastic totes! I still have most of that fabric and will happily root through it to find candidates for this week’s stitching. I am loving and appreciating my long journey of experimenting, discovery, and learning. Your videos often prompt memories of that journey. As I’ve said before, I deeply value the connections that sewing/quilting/stitching/mending gifts us to women past, present, and future! ❤

Rag curls...I remember, but fought so hard as a child, my mom kept my hair pixie short!
@k3n.clothtales9 ай бұрын
I was the opposite, Mum wanted it short because it was always in a tangle but I insisted on having it long. I always begged for ringlets and forget every time how uncomfortable rags were to sleep in. In my teens I was a huge Kate Bush fan (still am) and used to sleep in a gazillion little plaits so when I took them out in the morning, my hair looked like Kate's. Mum used to moan about finding the little bits of cotton thread that I used to tie them with all over my room. 😂

It's so interesting how we all approach fabric. For instance, I love thicker cloth and I love silk for hand sewing. I dislike knit or t-shirt type fabrics. I like to wear them, but I don't like to hand sew with them. Natalie Chanin (from Alabama Chanin) changed my mind on cotton jersey. But, it's still not my favorite.🥲I know what I will be sewing with this weekend.😅Really enjoyed getting to see your thought process on this project, thank you.

Hi, Kathryn! As always, it was so nice to watch your video. I tend to use “tricksy” fabrics because I don’t have many options. Either I buy them new (which I try not to) or a buy them in the only charity shop that exists where I live, and they don’t have many options… So sometimes I use clothes that I don’t wear anymore. The thing is that I only wear the kind that are a bit “stretchy”, because I like to feel really free in my clothes, and they’re a nightmare to stitch 😂, because they get all wonky. Fortunately I don’t mind wonky, but I can’t use it for precise things, such as pouches or bags, unless it’s just embellishment. I’m glad you liked your piece this time, because I liked it too, a lot😍. Confession: I don’t shout, because I’m usually in my balcony and my neighbours would think I am mad 😂 🩷🩵❤️💙🧡💜🤍💛💚🩶🤎

Re the cloth thing, most British people will say fabric or material is more old fashioned. Years ago when I was teaching I had a gentleman in my classes who was a retired tailor and he called it cloth, I acquired the habit from him because I found it such a lovely, gentle word that seems to represent the thing it describes. ♥️
