Re: DNFing - It can also be a disservice to a book to force yourself to finish it when you dont want to. I came to this realization with Brothers Karamazov. I DNF'd it DOZENS of times. Then, one day I picked it up and it drew me in and kept me going. It is now one of my favorite books of all time. If I had forced myself through it the first time, I'd have thought it was a miserable experience.

Yes¡!!! I call those a "soft DNF". I can tell of it's my mood or the book. If it's the book, I'll unhaul it. If it's my mood and not feeling it or it's not pulling me in by 100pgs, soft DNF

The danger of DNF is that it becomes easier each time you do it. Up until my 40s I could count my dnf's on one hand. But after reading 100s of books, I started becoming less tolerant of bad writing/storytelling. Especially since I had usually seen the same plots|characters many times before. Often done much better.

Seeing the same plots/characters over and over is a perfectly reasonable reason to DNF. Same with tropy titles that make your eyes roll. A [ blank ] of [ blank ] and [ blank ]. Of [ blank ] and [ blank ]. [ blank ] born. [ blank ] fall.

I hear you on this, but there’s also an accountability to some of these books out there now. A lot of the high praised books aren’t great. It’s just like call of duty. Same game new skin. Some of these authors are good at reskinning a book and focus on the cheap thrills in order to get a book out. I believe there are far more unsung authors that deserve more praise than some of the big names out there that don’t. My time is far more valuable to me than slog through a book that’s not doing it for me. I give an author 100 to 150 pages. If you cant hook me by then, I’m not going to continue. Luckily, I’ve not had to do much of that because I’m careful about what I pick to read. And that’s all thanks to folks like Mike, Matt, Merphy, and countless others that suggest books I’m likely to be more interested in. So thanks Mike!

I have started The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry today and blasted through about 2/3 of it in one sitting. I’d highly recommend as a palate cleanser. It’s like 225 pages and pretty funny coming of age story about a couple dudes from Texas. On DNFing, embrace it Mike! I just finished Dracula. It's much more enjoyable than The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Both classics told by letters and journals, but Dracula is much more dynamic and you aren't removed from real action the way you are in Jekyll and Hyde, in which everything is at a distance, a tale told by a nosy neighbor, so to speak. I intend to read Frankenstein soon.

@@mikesbookreviews I put in the Blu-Ray then go to the Special Features and note down the names of all of them, then when I rip the disc with MakeMKV, I basically play the files and name them appropriately and put them in the right folders etc. So on my Jellyfin / Emby / Plex, I have full fat Blu-Ray quality with all the special features etc. No reason to ever really worry about the disc again :) I will grant you that disc swapping was far more annoying on DVDs as there were just a lot more discs. I think the Buffy Chosen Collection is like 20+ discs, it's ridiculous.

You’re making me increasingly more interested in The Echoes Saga. Do you think it’s as good as The Bound and the Broken, or does it still need to prove itself? Last week I finished Antigoné by Sophocles. It was good. I called it Roman Romeo and Juliet, though it’s decidedly different. I also finished Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It was good, but not the best historical stuff I’ve read. It has some really great ideas, but I felt like there was an underlying ego to Marcus Aurelius. I also finished Empire of Silence by Christopher Ruocchio. It was amazing. I gave it five stars, even though there were stretches that were a little exhausting. I’ll try to keep it spoiler free, but between the Colosso and introducing Valka, it was a tad boring, but it would probably be more important on a re-read. The last thing I read was The Art of War by Sun Tzu, which was also good. I’ll try to incorporate some of the ideas in The Art of War when I write my battle-scenes in the future. This week I hope to start and finish Bushido: The Soul of Japan by Inazo Nitobe. I also want to read The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington. What I’ve read so far is pretty interesting, but I’m not sure that I can finish it before the end of the week. I also want to get back to reading A Game of Thrones for the first time. Where I left off, it was interesting, but I’m only interested in a couple of the POV characters. I really like Tyrion, Jon and Ned, but Cat, Dany and Sonsa are a struggle.
