I grew up in Philly and “The quiet storm” started at night at 10pm. It was all of the classic 80’s ballads. Luther Vandross, Anita… So many greats. Janet was even on there with “Let’s wait while”. But what a time to be alive.

The Quiet Storm era was all about setting the mood for romance. Imagine having a date over, the candles are lit, the wine is open, and you and your date are just chilling comfortably and enjoying the wine, the music, and each other's company. 🥰

Quiet storm started as a radio format. A student at Howard U got the late night shift and dedicated his whole block to R&B love songs. This was adopted by other black radio stations and then artists began to create music for these blocks, just songs that make you want to be in love and easy. The name came from a Smokey Robinson song. That’s like the cliff notes version!

Some other quiet storm artists of the '80s: Smokey Robinson, Sade, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Barry White, Atlantic Starr, Freddie Jackson, Meli'sa Morgan, Regina Belle, Vanessa Williams, Vesta Williams, Shirley Murdock, Miki Howard, Teena Marie, The Isley Brothers, LeVert, Howard Hewett, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Grover Washington, Jr., James Ingram, Patti Austin, Patrice Rushen, Phyllis Hyman, Karyn White, Angela Bofill, Angela Winbush, Michael McDonald, DeBarge, Peabo Bryson, Roberta Flack, Kenny G, Rene' & Angela, Brenda Russell, Randy Crawford, Taylor Dane, and Lisa Stansfield, to name a few. There were also quiet storm artists in the '70s and '90s. Some of those listed above for the '80s, actually spanned the '70s, '80s, '90s and beyond. A singer who came to prominence in the '90s and shares some similarities vocally to Anita Baker, and whom I think you will like is Toni Braxton.

For awhile, r&b soul and jazz only had one singer who did this type of music. That was the late Luther Vandross. He would sing backup for Stevie Wonder and left backup to join a group called Change. Then he got to doing his own career. His first song was "Never Too Much" (kind of like "Same old Love"). We needed a female "Vandross" so that's when I heard her first song "Angel". Rapture was her 2nd album, Giving You The Best That I've Got (3rd), Compositions (4th), Body and Soul (5th). She had to stop singing for awhile because she and her husband kept having miscarriages for 8 or 9 years. But she was an advertising agent for hair, makeup, and nails. In 2008, she had been touring for years but wanted to do more music, so she released two more albums: "My Everything" and "Anita Baker's Christmas". Over the years she has met many women artists who were influenced by her and she's done duets with them. If you like other Quiet storm artists, they are: Stephanie Mills, Freddie Jackson (no relation to the famous Jackson family), Jeffrey Osborne, Lisa Stansfield, Teena Marie, Toni Braxton, Babyface, George Benson, Randy Crawford, Sade, Groove Theory, Erykah Badu, India Arie, and Jill Scott.

You guys will never run out of Quiet Storm content if you go that route. 😂 So many artists qualify under that umbrella for various songs. You can still hear that format on many urban programming (aka, Black) radio stations, mostly in the evenings after 8pm or so. All smooth jazz, slow R&B ballads, love songs, etc. People often call in to dedicate songs to their S.O. as well. It’s supposed to be the wind down from your busy stressful day, & also your soundtrack for sexy time. 😉

from what I remember of the quiet storm ' Barry White, After 7, Tevin Campbell, Gerald Lovert, Maxwell, Jon B, Kevin Lattimore, Tony Terry, Mint Condition, Monica, Brian McKnight, baby face, Luther Vandross, Sade, Anita Baker, and more ' ...and if no one has mentioned Toni Braxton recorded a record for Anita Baker, for the film boomerang starting Eddie Murphy. but Anita Baker didn't want the record and told Toni Braxton to keep the record and thats how Toni got her big hit the record is called ' Love Shoulda Brought You Home '.

Anita Baker is very much still performing. In fact she went viral twice. First, this past year there was controversy between her and Babyface because they were supposed to be touring together. But either she kicked him off the tour or something else happened, but it did not end well. Second, she canceled her show in Atlanta less than a few hours before she was set to perform, and ticket buyers were pissed. Especially this woman who went viral for making this video complaint calling Anita " baldheaded ass!"

So yeah just go ahead and listen to Smokey Robinson “Quiet Storm” it’s a song that was played on R&B radio stations nationwide right before said stations got into very own “quiet storm-esque” playlists, magnificently nostalgic to us 80s and 90s babies. Riding in the backseat of our parents/grandparents cars as the sun went down, it usually meant it’s close to bedtime so it was a bit melancholic in hindsight. Just beautiful memories attached to that.
Quiet storm was a thing. I think people still listen to the music from then. Peabo Bryson was huge in that. As was Norman Connors and Phyllis Hyman, Joe (yes, just Joe) and Midnight Star. Lots of artists to choose from in the category. (And I hope Body and Soul is next on this list of Anita hits. If not, please listen to it anyway because it is fantastic.)
