This is not about Justin. They were still together and he helped this album, the ME is more a Max Martin (producer) who also produced NSync. The songs is about her record company and the media. She was heavily bullied by the press since her first album because they treated her as "a role model for young girls" so if she wore something sexy "she was bad role model" and so on. Her Rolling Stone cover in 1999 was when the media really went after her. Her record company made her lie about being a virgin so this became a topic for the tabloids they would keep on asking if she was still a virgin and so on. She was trying to break off the goody two shoes image. Her family was already doing bad stuff in the background, but this song is not about it.

This song is so fkn dynamic. Very substantive but still fresh sounding. Britney was feeling her Janet/Michael Jackson teas in this video and she was just delivering angles, lines and looks. Britney deserved so much more but the Free Britney movement really changed things and scared many powerful elites in the industry. Stan culture broke through and exposed what was going down.

Just wanted to thank you guys for the compassion you show for not only Britney but famous people (especially young famous people!) in general. I understand that people have a hard time wanting to feel empathy for people who seemingly “have it all” but I would never, EVER want to be famous. You gain material things and you lose exponentially more intangible things that are so much more important. No matter how much money or connections you have, it can’t give you back your privacy, your childhood, a sense of normalcy, people treating you like a person instead of a god, asset, or zoo animal. Fame takes away so much more than it gives. Some people search for it but others, like Britney, were forced into it at an incredibly young age (age 11 on the Mickey Mouse Club!). Others just want to share their art or do what they are passionate about and fame finds them. We see how badly it affects so many people and I think there does need to be a more compassionate discussion around the treatment, and exploitation, of famous people, including by their supposed “fans”.

My #1 Britney song since 2001. Production-wise, it's the best Max has ever done. The last minute of the song is absolute genius. I mean, they used a freaking neapolitan chord in it! Fantastic.
