My thoughts exactly. Lewis needs to talk to someone and learn more about the artists that shaped the music he hears now as "samples." So many times he shouts "wait, that's from so and so! You mean they didn't write that?" So much of any music after the early to mid '90s is sub-par.

Elton John-"Candle in the Wind" October 1997. He sang this song live at Princess Diana's funeral at Westminster Abbey in September 1997, so the song became very popular. Her death was widely mourned in the U.S. He donated the global proceeds to Diana's charities.

Not just the 70s, but the 60s, 70s, and early 80s... my daughter's wanted to listen to "their music" on the car radio in the 1990s... then I started singing along, over and over again, and they finally realized that SO MUCH of the 90s were rehashed covers. Early artists didn't have Autotune. If you were good, it showed. If you were only so-so, that showed too. Even some of the 1960s songs were copies of 1950s songs, but the 1990s reached a new level of copying.

"Streets of Philadelphia" is a song written and performed by American rock musician Bruce Springsteen for the 1993 film Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks, an early mainstream film dealing with HIV/AIDS. Released as a single by Columbia Records in 1994, the song was a hit in many countries, including Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway, where it topped the singles charts. In the United States, the single peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Springsteen's 12th and latest top-10 hit. The song received critical acclaim, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. In 2004, it finished at number 68 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top songs in American cinema. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

About Scatman: 1. "Scatting" is a way of using your voice as an instrument in Jazz without using words. So the "ski ba ba bop" etc would fit that exactly. 2. The dude had a strong stutter and ended up using this to his advantage by creating fast pace scatting that many people struggled to keep up with.

Fun Fact: The Michael Jackson era started back in the 60's when he was part of the group his dad formed with Michael and 4 of his brothers - The Jackson 5. He was the lead singer on so many songs, despite being the youngest of the boys. They had their first hit in 1970, "I Want You Back," followed by several more that defined the soul/funk side of 70s music. His sisters, Latoya and Janet had to find their success as solo artists, though Janet found acting success as a child. She played Penny, an abused girl the Evans family protected, on the sitcom Good Times(48 episodes there), and had 10 episodes on another sitcom, Diff'rent Strokes, playing Charlene, Willis's teenage girlfriend.

Just to be clear, Madonna started in the 80s and continued her reign in the 90s. Mariah Carey's success began in the 90s. The song I'll Be There is a remake of a Jackson 5 song. Elton John was a 70s artist but he continued to make awesome music in the 80s and just to be clear he did write the music for the original Lion King. Eric Clapton is one of the best guitarist in history. He did a cover of I Shot the Sherrif in the 70s. Give it a listen.

The late 90s "Latin Sound Explosion" featuring Ricky Martin, J Lo, Enrique Iglesias, and later Shakira, Daddy Yankee, etc was thanks in no small part to Selena Quintanilla's cross over that sadly happened months after she died. Often called "the Latin Madonna", she was a fashion icon, music legend, actress and amazing all around talent who died at only 23. She quite literally launched J Lo's career, when J Lo was selected to play her in the biopic movie about Selena's life, titled "Selena". her channel on KZbin still outperforms other, more contemporary stars with songs like "Como La Flor" leading the way with just shy of three quarters of a billion views. June 1995 should likely have been represented by "I Could Fall In Love" as this was a chart topper on both English and Spanish language charges, marking the first time and English language track had topped Spanish language charts in history.

This is just a list of top #1 songs for each month of each year of the 90's. If it's not on here it wasn't a top #1 song for the month of those years. There are too many good songs of the 90's to be on a list like this. Heck, this list doesn't even have Sheryl Crow, Natalie Imbruglia, Six Pence None The Richer, The Cardigans , Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Train or Soul Asylum. :)

I actually knew far fewer of these than of the 70s/80s because I stopped commuting by car to work in 1993 and the only time I ever listened to popular music was on my car radio while commuting. By then I was also beyond the age when music about falling in love and sex really "spoke" to me and those things are what 90% of popular music is about in this era (compare to the 1960s when popular music was about political issues, the war, civil rights and many other things).

The bar was open all night and I needed to sober up to get home (took train there, car was mile away). I thought 'Santana' was some dumb cover band that ripped off his name, but then he started playing and I knew. It was amazing, and the $5 to get in was worth it for just the lack of DUI let alone them playing.

The 80s and 90s had GREAT music. Many of the artists that started in the 80s continued having hits in the 90s. RE Michael Jackson, he had so many hits that we just expected him to give us nothing but greatness. Also, in the 90s, so many of "the bangers" were played in gyms around the country. Madonna was first popular in the early 80s, but she reinvented herself about every 8 years, so we are to the 4th iteration by now. I watched out of curiosity. By this time I almost exclusively listened to CDs or grunge, and grunge was a Pacific Northwest thing that may not make many top song lists (think Nirvana, Sound Garden, Alice in Chains, Bush). Elton John still plays, but his 1997 song was a tribute after Princess Diana died.
