About the whistling. It's a sneeze-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but Smol Raine said their magic can change the chemistry of their drinks. Not just the flavor, but the entire chemical makeup. Meaning the potion's effects were nullified. And the fact that we see them doing it back during the parade is brilliant continuity. But it's ouch to the heart in retrospect because that means Raine remembered everything and was just trying to keep Eda safe.

Some disorganized thoughts on this episode. - Bump is such an underrated character. He's great. I love that earlier in the show he seemed to have a tenser relationship with Eda, but here we see they actually got along great... she's just caused him a lot of stress with her antics, is all. From an administrative standpoint, she was a nightmare as a student. - Bard magic is apparently seen as 'uncool' during the time of the flashback, but I don't remember that ever being a thing in the present time. Attitudes about different types of magic probably change, since in the present it's Illusions that tend to be underestimated (as seen with Gus). - Where Eda and Raine first interact is the same place where Luz and Amity had their first heartfelt exchange, all the way back in 1x5. Also, the stadium area is the same place where Luz and Amity duelled... and then later, Eda and Lilith. In general, Eda and Raine being pitted against each other and refusing to fight has some painful echoes to Eda and Lilith's relationship. - All of Lilith's screentime here is painful because of the dramatic irony. We can literally see her starting to compare herself to Eda and doubt in her own abilities. But also, I find it an interesting touch that Lilith had access to Eda's secret shortcuts in the school and never told on her. She can be a bit of a hypocrite about following the rules, huh? - Terra isn't only overzealous about hurting children, she's also here to indoctrinate them. Team-building exercises and academic achievement aren't enough for the Covens, they're trying to prepare these kids to participate in a violent, oppressive system. It's sinister and it's only going to keep looking worse. - This show always has stunning visuals, but that last shot of Eda and Raine framed by the window, and then the ending scene of Raine with the Titan's skull in the background, are some of my favourites. Everyone talks about the reveal, no one talks about how GOOD it looks. I swear. - Raine's voice actor is nonbinary, you probably already knew this. But did you know they got another nonbinary person to voice young Raine? I love how much care goes into their portrayal. I hope it starts a trend of having more nonbinary characters in children's media who are handled just as naturally.

@@AZDfox I think her name's actually Vee. I was talking about me though just cause our names sound the same I thought it'd be funny. A bit of meta, meta humor if you will -Vi

Sound Magic (like any other Magic) has multiple properties. Simple sound frequencies can break down solid objects or alter natural electrical impulses in our brains. As Rain demonstrated, he used sound Magic to alter a liquids chemical composition.

It's easy to miss, but it's implied Raine taught themselves to change the flavor of drinks bc their family is less well off financially. Hence the scholarship thing too. I think it's really cool bc it means them being from a poorer family is also the reason they are able to break free later on. I find it really poetic that they gain real strength and power from a harder upbringing. Also a nice contrast to Eda who we know grew up in an extremely wealthy family, but then ran off to be alone.

Wow the irony in 15:08 to 15:10 that after years the roles were reversed, Eda became a wild and Raine became a coven. I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS DETAIL!!

i couldnt wait for you to get to this episode! seeing you first drink the tea, you see they always have the audible whistle! nice way to set it up, yet no one would have guessed in the moment!

I think Eda learned potion facts the ",hard way" through experimentation rather than rote memorization. She may have skimmed the book but otherwise she learned by doing.

Very interesting how they showed the petrification glyph at the start of the episode. It's a Chekov's Gun.

Fun Fact! The day I watched this episode, as soon as it finished, the first thing I did was go back to the Coven Day Parade episode and listen very closely when Raine blows on their "medicinal" tea? YOU CAN HEAR THE WHISTLE.

Me too!!!! I was so happy when I heard their lil whistle!!

The code word for this episode is 'Darkened', leaving the message as - "Seething Seas And Puppet Strings, He No Longer Dreams Of Kings. As Above Rush Darkened-" Raine not actually being brainwashed puts a whole new twist on the parade fight between them and Eda, huh. Makes it somehow even sadder.

I wonder if anybody who plays D&D will use Raine's whistle as part of a Bard's roster of skills? Follow-up question...do you think the whistle can be seen as a combo of Bard and Transmutation Magic?

If you rewatch the first scene where Raine's given that drink from Terra in Ep11, you can hear a faint whistle as they blow on it before drinking It's not focused on in that moment, and we'd not know that they can even change the chemistry of a drink until a few episodes later I love that bit of foreshadowing!

By the way, Mosco. Even back at the Coven Day Parade episode you can hear Raine blow on the tea and gently whistle while doing so. You don't notice it initially because it's extremely subtle, but with the revelation it is so obviously there it's incredible.
