That's exactly what it feels like to me too. It really was fascinating to learn more about the show's origins. If I could time travel, I'd head back to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2000/2001 and see how it all began (and I'd be sure to take advantage of the 2 for 1 ticket offer for goths!)

_" ... and woman, Liz Asher."_ Oh Hell, you nailed that! I had actually just rewatched "Hell Hath Fury" and then came across this in my recommendations, and that line made me laugh pretty hard. After all the other character's descriptions, "woman" really is the only thing to Liz's characterization (the only other term for her that I could think of would be "psychic woman," but even that just plays into the stereotype of "women's intuition.") [EDIT] _"Although I should point out that, unlike in Darkplace, we don't come with subtitles."_ And you leave me laughing out loud yet again. I just wanted to point it out because, although I find plenty of things on the Internet to be funny, they rarely ever make me _actually laugh out loud._ So congratulations and thank you; excellent job. 😁
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think that's how Liz was actually credited in the DVD blurb (which tracks with Garth's attitudes and the whole "the one that's a girl" media trope of the 80s and 90s). As a Scot, I've seen my auto generated subtitles and those are... well, they're interesting sometimes! 🤣

@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 жыл бұрын
They're both perfect - it's as if Alice and Matt were born to play those parts. I'm a big fan of campy horror and bad movies/TV in general, but it's rare to see it done as brilliantly as this. I do wonder if Darkplace would have got more attention if it had come out a bit later and been promoted through social media, but the fact that it came out during the earlier internet days just makes it that more special.

@@WeeLin Ha, no S4C would never dub Channel 4 programmes. Just bury them in the dead of night, around the hours that the world of the dead encroaches on our own reality. Good thing too cause I can’t speak Welsh 🤔

@@TheBeird Me neither, and I've only ever ventured on S4C myself for rugby matches. Now curious how Darkplace would sound in a Welsh dub - I'm learning Irish at the moment, so I know exactly how difficult Celtic languages can be! "Darkplace" in Irish is (I think!) "Áit Dorcha", so there's a bit of pointless info for you.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it's amazing when so much talent aligns. In any other comedy, Matt, Alice or any of the other performers would have been the stand-out of the show, but in Darkplace, every single aspect is outstanding. Man to Man was great too, and I'm surprised Matthew Holness isn't a bigger name in the acting world (I head he's an amazing director these days though).

An all time mighty blight o' fright! Kind of like the missing link between Police Squad, Spinal Tap and Ghost Watch but still totally its own thing. There so much detail, like the typefaces of Garth's novels being the same as those used on the covers of certain 80's horror authors, the cat at the start visibly being thrown in front if Liz... to this day in I need to motivate myself to go somewhere or get something done I do tend to shout out 'JUST LEEEAAVE!!!'

Everywhere I went it felt like they were watching me; fish-white flesh puckered by the Highland breeze; tight eyes peering out for fresh meat; screechy, booze-soaked voices hollering out for a taxi to take 'em halfway up the road to the next all-night watering hole. A shatter of glass; a round of applause; a sixteen-year-old mother of three vomiting in an open sewer, bairns looking on, chewing on potato cakes. Just hook it to my veins.

I was confused by Garth Marengi's Darkplace as I thought it was gonna be a show about monsters and ghosts, but instead it was really just two seasons about office workers at a paper company. The boss was funny though, even if he was a bit nasty, but I liked the first version of Garth Marengi better where Steve Carell played the boss character. All in all, I did enjoy Darkplace, but I didn't really care for the IT character, as he had a weird shaped head.

The content of Man to Man seems fine but the live audience breaks the illusion for me a bit, and I can't enjoy it quite as much. The idea that these people take themselves so seriously that they don't even realise an entire audience is in uproarious laughter at everything they say seems a bit too hard to believe, so having them in the same room feels wrong when compared with all the nuance in Darkplace's presentation. Great video though! I didn't realise Darkplace was such a phenomenon originally (I only ever really knew about the show, and only years later)

I feel like in a way the show only lasting 6 episodes makes it even funnier, like once the executives started seeing the finished products they immediately pulled the on the whole thing. Further adding to how delusional Garth and Dean are thinking that this is a good show. I think the main reason this show struggled to find an audience, is that this show is hard to pitch in a short amount of time, you have to explain not only the show, but the show with in the show. there really is no "elevator pitch" for this show so it makes recommending it a lot harder.

Maybe she was almost fatally injured on set by Dean, Todd or Garth, none of whom checked to confirm that she was actually dead. She was then disposed of haphazardly (maybe dumped on the back of a boat or something) and she eventually came to, but suffered from amnesia (of course!). Seeing clips from Darkplace on TV many years later has since unlocked some of her past memories, but the twist is that she now believes herself to be Dr Liz Asher, not the actress Madeleine Wool.
