An underrated classic of the dark comedy genre, Psychoville gave us two series and a Hallowe’en special. It’s been a decade since it started airing on the BBC, but few people seem to be talking about it anymore. So, of course, I’m trying to change that! Whether you missed it the first time, haven’t seen it in years, or never heard of the bloody thing, here’s why you should definitely pay a visit to Psychoville.

My mate is working in Holland and can't access iPlayer, so I've had to try and keep all the excitement off facebook. Tonight, someone posted a party dance with inside no 9 plastered all over it on my page and he saw it, oops! So excited by it and judging by the pocast, they've fallen in love with the characters all over again, so hopefully one day, there'll be more

"Miss Tina Turner!!!!" That scene made my jaw drop.
@soulfoodie1

What is most draw dropping about it is that it was directly based on a woman Reece and Steve had seen in a documentary about Blackpool who would impersonate Tina Turner in a similar manner (have actually seen the clip so verify it is even more strange than what happens in Psychoville!). When I attended a screening of Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room (along with the 'Rope' episode of Psychoville) the line about the Tina Turner impersonation got the biggest laugh of the night

Glad to have caught this one so early! There are some absolute gems of scenes throughout the two series & some cracking performances - I agree, The Sowerbutts version of 'Superman' is pure gold & Freddy's final scenes were to die for ;) The description of the series being the 'middle child' is pretty much where it sits for me. It straddles (legs akimbo, so to speak) League & No.9 as a bridge between the two. Really looking forward to your analysis of 'Twelve Days of Christine'...I wonder if we have the same fan theories ;)

Great video! As other commenters have said, it's wonderful to see this show getting some appreciation - and for the record, I rate it as their best work, even above Inside No. 9. I had no idea there was an extended Halloween episode (or rather that the one I had seen had been shortened), so I'll go seek that out! Thanks for sharing! (And on the off-chance that you haven't seen it, I thoroughly recommend the behind-the-scenes special for 'David and Maureen', which shows how they managed to do the whole episode in one take. Fascinating and very clever stuff)
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 4 жыл бұрын
I loved that they put that on the DVD to prove they did David and Maureen in one take (I already thought they did - it has all the energy of a single take, they're all highly experienced in live performance, plus I was so engrossed I missed the cut!) And yeah, the Hallowe'en episode originally had a whole section with Mr Lomax and Tealeaf, which I think was the part cut for the shorter version.

Series 3 of League of Gentlemen lost them quite a few fans, I think. It still has some great moments, and was far better than most stuff on TV at the time, but definitely not the strongest series in my opinion. Psychoville really showed Reece and Steve getting back on form, and the fact that Mark joined them for an episode gave it an extra sense of bridging the gap (with "legz akimbo" - amazing!). I think Inside No 9 shows how well they've mastered the art of storytelling - their previous work was mostly character-driven, so I don't think as much thought went in to ending their arcs. They've really nailed it with this one. Don't know where they'll go next, but I am damned excited to find out!

After discovering Inside Number 9 way to late (well into series 8) I had a lot of catching up to do after it finished. When googling Steve and Reece I found out about Psychoville and bought the complete series on DVD. I loved it, I rarely laughed so hard at gruesome situations on film. Mr. Jelly will always be my favorite character on the show. Although to be honest, I love every Shearsmith character, as I’ve got a bit of a crush on him.

got season one and two on dvd for christmas watched all of season one and one episode of two and I absolutely love it. I'm big fan of league and number nine (which was how I found the channel) and was aware of psychoville but probably wouldn't have watched if this video hadn't compelled so thanks for introducing me into this utterly bizarre world.

I'm a 50 something year old who likes to think of myself as fairly intelligent, cultured and world-wise. I've watched all the 'classics' (both TV and big screen), and as of 2022 Psychoville is still up there with one of the best (and strangest) things I've ever watched on screen.

I always neglected Psychoville, so I’ve just watched the whole lot in a few days. The first series was terrific, and I greatly enjoyed the Halloween special. The second series… lacked, somehow. I don’t know what it is, there just seemed to be an attempt to stretch it longer than it needed to be. Hattie didn’t seem to serve much purpose, to be honest. Still some terrific stuff in it, though. Excellent cast, excellent characters. I’m glad David and Maureen’s stories were resolved in Inside No 9.

As a British person, I’ve never heard pantomime being explained. You just kind of know what it is. So hearing you describe it was bizarre but yes, completely normal 😂
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 18 күн бұрын
It was a weird thing to think about as an outsider, but I'd come to realise (through knowing people who didn't grow up in the UK or Ireland) that "pantomime" to them simply meant "mime" and they had NO frame of reference for the madness that is "panto". It felt right to give an explanation, which was honestly a bit of a challenge in itself. It's one of those things you grow up with, but becomes completely absurd the moment you stop to think about it!

I stumbled upon "Inside No. 9" from a podcast, bought the first series on Blu-Ray, and I was hooked. I thought it sort of lagged in the fourth series, but the recent fifth series made an exception of the rule about diminishing returns. I love it. Therefore, I had to check out "Psychoville", and I was pleased until the second season, when they start bumping off main characters as quickly as "The Walking Dead". Overall, it was okay, but "Inside No. 9" remains one of the most ingenious shows I've ever seen, and I can't believe these guys co-wrote (probably more or less) every episode. Confession: I don't like "Riddle of the Sphinx".
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't talk about it in the video (as it would be a bit too spoiler-heavy for those who haven't seen it) but I did start to feel quite disappointed with all the killings in series 2. One alone would have been a dramatic twist, but it got to the stage where you start thinking "who are they going to bump off this week?" I loved all of those characters, and it started to feel like a cheap send-off. However, I did like some of the new characters in the second series, and I was glad to see the last two "original" characters in Death Be No Proud. I can see people not liking Riddle of the Sphinx - definitely one of the nastiest episodes in my opinion, and I very nearly vomited on my first watch. Still one of my favourites, so I guess I'm just weird!

That might have something to do with it, however it was on Netflix a few years back (they had the lot, including the Hallowe'en special), but I don't remember anyone talking about it then either. I'm surprised iPlayer don't have Psychoville up, and haven't for quite a while, especially as the BBC's KZbin channels still have quite a lot of clips.
