The whole reason that Weezer hit their decade long dry spell was how critics completely bashed on Pinkerton, an album that Rivers poured a lot of guys soul into creating. His confidence was shot. While he did grow distant to his loyal fans, it's understandable. It's not like he did what he did out of spite. I think people need to be a lot easier on him and the band in general.

It doesn't help that the super personal, revealing diary of an album he poured his heart and soul into to the point of being embarrassed by it is now worshiped like a religious text by legions of fans who demand he write a New Testament. You can't blame Rivers for not wanting to indulge that.

I think Weezer would have released much better albums in the 21st century if Pinkerton wasn't initially panned. The fact that most hated or didn't buy Pinkerton really knocked Rivers' confidence down, an album that is probably the most personal album I've ever heard. Saying that though, this album is by far the best they've put out since Pinkerton.
@evanduvanel3075
@evanduvanel3075 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a HUGE part of why they made so many bad albums after Pinkerton is because some people absolutely hated Pinkerton after it came out, which really killed River's motivation to put his emotions into his music, and it was his emotional involvement that made Blue Album and Pinketon so good. It wasn't until the mid-2000s when I think people started giving it praise.

Rivers basically went crazy after pinkerton was panned, he locked himself in a black room for ages.

Another thing I don't think I people get is that they really need to stop expecting another Pinkerton. What made it so good is that it was so raw and unfiltered, but when Rivers was restless, horny, and had daddy issues. He ain't like that no more. He's 40-something, he's made up with his dad, and settled down with his wife, which he very directly brushes on in "Back to the Shack". People need to stop yearning for Pinkerton just because he can't put it out again. It was so good because of the pure emotions he put into it, but he doesn't have those feelings anymore. I really just think people need to stop wanting Pinkerton and start appreciating weezer for weezer, and I think weezer really shows what it is at it's core with this most recent album, and I can't speak for everyone but I honestly think what weezer is at it's core nowadays is awesome.

Weezer (along with Sepultura) are the two bands I feel most sorry for. They're constantly in the shadows of the triumphs of their earlier careers, and with every new album fans hold their breath for a "return to form". Sure both bands have had their gems and their duds in their later efforts, but what are they supposed to do, pander to nostalgic fans stuck in the 90's? Says more about the fans than the bands really.
@wickkidda
@wickkidda 10 жыл бұрын
Rivers sold his soul. He chose success over maintaining artistic integrity. There's not much reason to feel sorry for him other than what happened to Mykel and Carli in '96. What he did after that was his decision. A lot of people don't know how the music industry works. They gave Rivers what he wanted, money and fame, and in exchange he became their pet.

but Anthony, AGN isn't JUST about tfw no gf. There's that section that speaks about his father not being there. "My daddy loved me no one could touch me 'till he went up and left me lonely that's human nature we fail each other and keep on searching for another". and it can be taken as a song about the fans who loved the 90s stuff no longer being interested in weezer. I think it's a pretty neat song that introduces the three themes found on the album (fatherhood/father figures. relationship with fans, and tfw no gf) Best opening track weezer has had since Pinkerton IMO

Dude, I think you needed to listen to the album a few more times before making this. Ain't Got Nobody is not just about a girl. It's about all three themes. He's literally got nobody. No fans. No girl. No dad. And it rocks so. freaking. hard. And the vocals are epic. You missed the mark on this one a bit. You also wrote-off Go Away too soon as well. There's a lot of subtlety in the lyrics. The way Rivers tries to downplay his infidelity by saying "what I did", and "hurt your feelings". He can't even actually say he cheated on her because it makes him look bad, and he's only apologizing that he hurt her feelings, not that what he did was wrong. But we see the girl's resoluteness in her lyrics, when both verses have her rhyming the a word with itself. At first you might think that it's just bad song-writing, but not when it's done on purpose. It's genius. Very Shakespearian. Lonely Girl is pretty straightforward, yes. Very green album. But I like the green album, so I'll agree to disagree with you on that one. Back to the Shack, I understand your point. But if you change how you look at it, it becomes okay. I see it as an intro to the album, not part of it. It's saying "I screwed up, now here's the awesome music you've been waiting for."

Damn dude i know this is a dead comment but I really hope Anthony read this. I totally agree with everything you said here. I wanna add to your comments about lonely girl too. The song is, for me, the ideal weezer sound because it blends melodies so well. The lyrics are a little disappointing at first listen, but the song is seriously so well organized. The polyphonies that brian and rivers play in lonely girl are so sharp and really complement Rivers’ vocal “whininess” that he captures so well. For instance after each “lonely girl” you hear the lead guitar hit these notes that sound almost agonized but in a really distorted filter. The rise and fall of that sound throughout the song make it such a fucking awesome listen. Plus listen to the lead guitar around the solo and end of the song if you wanna see what I mean more about complementing Rivers’ tone.

Honestly I never felt betrayed by Weezer because I grew up in the 2000s listening to songs like Beverly Hills, Island In the Sun, Perfect Situation, as well as the earlier songs like Pork and Beans, Buddy Holly, the Sweater Song, and Say it Ain't So. I feel like some of us younger fans just don't get that because we never went from "wow weezer is awesome" to "they aren't releasing the good shit they did in the 90's", we just know the good weezer songs, and more of them happen to be from the 90s. I don't hold weezer to the ridiculous standard that they have to make music as good as they did, as good as the Blue Album. I LOVE EWBAITE. I can see what he's saying with the immature lyrics, but it's not a decline, it's the same as they've always been. I loved Ain't Got Nobody, I think it has classic weezer lyrics (I'm sorry if you are now too mature to listen to weezer) and I didn't feel like it was too loud to hear the lyrics, sure it was a little much in the beginning, but it was a fun intro to the album, and I can really rock out to it. Since this album came out Da Vinci has been my fav weezer song, 'nuff said. Cleopatra was amazing as well, second best of the album. Loved Eulogy, and I in no way minded Go Away or Lonely Girl. Sure they weren't the best, but they were still not skip worthy to me. I feel like they were spot on with I've had it up to here. People need to stop being so bitter about their newer albums, if you don't think they're as good just don't praise them, you don't have to put them down just cause they aren't on the same level as Blue. I still love weezer, and I still loved them in the 2000s, but again, those albums came out when I was a kid and I loved em. I would say top favs are 1. blue and 2. tie between this album and pinkerton. And I really don't know where to put white... It wasn't as good as EWBAITE overall imo. It had amazing songs like thank god for girls and do you wanna get high, but the average of the whole album wasn't as great as EWBAITE.

I think that some of the songs you call cliche here like "Ain't Got Nobody", "Lonely Girl" and "Go Away" are not as simple as they appear to be on the surface. I think this is a very strong concept album about Rivers coming to a place of peace in his life - forgiving the people who wronged him and letting go of bitterness and moving onto a new stage. These songs may SEEM like simple love songs but I think the love that Rivers is actually chasing is the Weezer fanbase. He doesn't have anybody because their core fanbase abandoned him over the years - they want him to go away. The songs are still simple but I think when looked at from this angle they fit the concept of the album a whole lot better and it's not so much like they are just singing cliche pop songs for the hell of it. Rivers is trying to woo us back - the people who used to love his band. They are the girl he is chasing this time.

You mostly nailed it, Anthony, although I liked this album quite a bit more than you (including "Ain't Got Nobody" and "Go Away," which I think are quite nice). I was an early fan who jumped off the train with "Make Believe" and cringed at every album since, but this is the first one since, actually, "Pinkerton" that I've seriously enjoyed. Green was such a disappointment back in 2001 and "Maladroit," while better, still had some liabilities. The lyrics here are much better than those two records and it doesn't sound to me like Rivers is just toying with his fans anymore. Plus there is a sweetness and innocence on this album that Weezer largely abandoned in the past 12 years or so. EWBAITE reminds me of all the reasons I loved Weezer in the first place while not being a carbon copy of their first two. I don't think we can expect a guy in his mid 40s who's married with two kids to come up with another "Pinkerton," nor should we.

I enjoyed this album quite a lot. I believe that this album was more of an 8/10 instead of a 7/10. I think it deserves that extra point because I thought the music was quite fantastic. Compared to everything else they have done in the last decade has been quite bad. You can tell that they really did try to go back to themselves with this album, but in a different kind of way. I honestly wish they would've leaned more towards a Pinkerton sound, but I don't think that they will be able to do anything that wonderful again.

LETTER FROM A FAN Hey Anthony, I'm a long time fan, but first time dropping a comment. Music is my passion. There's nothing tangible that I love more than music. I relate to the skit from the first song on Kendrick's mixtape Overly Dedicated called "The Heart Pt. 2" when someone rants about music and its influence in his life. I love all kinds of music, from Blackberry Smoke to Nina Simone to MF DOOM to Dave Matthews Band to Youth Lagoon to Jim Croce... You get the picture. The problem that I have is that I know no one who listens to more music than me, and nobody I've met shares the same connection to music that I feel. I have a lot of friends, and we exchange playlists and CD every now and then. However, whenever I try to get deep into a discussion about hip-hop, or classic rock, or whatever, I end up doing most of the talking and it gets weird and sometime even awkward when I continue to talk when their knowledge of the topic runs out. My question is to know whether or not you do/did ever feel the same way, if did however you overcame it, and what is my best action if any going forward. I love all my friends, but there is always a disconnect with each of them because music is never that big of a part of their life. If you end up reading this and responding to it, thank you so much. Sincerely, Jared

I feel like opinions on this record are really divided on the two songs you mentioned as disliking in "Lonely Girl" and "Go Away". I personally think the former is one of the better songs on the album. Ignore the cliched lyrics are for a moment and just focus on how the element of Rivers' emoting and the triumphant sounding lead guitars clash. This is a trick that Weezer used a lot in the 90s with tracks like "The Good Life" or "No One Else". On "Go Away", whatever... I get why people don't like that track but to me it's catchy, dumb, and fun. I'm not gonna get mad at Weezer for making Weezer songs on a Weezer album.

EWBAITE is the third best Weezer album which, at this point, is probably the best we could hope for. There are moments where they come close to Pinkerton brilliance but as a whole, this album is mammoth step towards what Weezer fans want. I genuinely think the next album could be a classic and viewed in the same light as the first two. Consider this album rehab.

I feel as if most Weezer fans just look at the singles and COMPLETELY ignore everything else. Like sure, Beverly Hills and We Are All on Drugs may not be the best songs, but I feel like that's how people define Make Believe. Believe it or not, there are good songs on that record. A lot of them as a matter fact! Same with Red, and heck, even Raditude (to an extent)! Weezer, like any artist, should be able to do what they want creatively and have people at least give it a chance. Unfortunately, I know that a lot of people completely disregard that mindset and just hope for another Say it Ain't So. Oh well.

Make Believe was the first CD I ever owned. It's honestly one of my favorite Weezer albums, and I listened to it religiously back in the day. But now that I've matured, I can completely understand why people didn't like it. It was like a sharp left turn in Weezer's career, and to be frank, I really hated everything Weezer put out after Make Believe. But I'm glad to see they're somewhat back, and even a little self aware on this new record.

i have to say after meeting a lot of people that call themselves "true weezer fans" i don't believe it's the music that's gone sour i just think i truly can't stand other people who claim to like this music. it's like i always end up talking to the well, actually guy you meet at parties. anything you throw into conversation he pops up with well, actually.. and you're just like ughhhhh who invited you?? if you only consider yourself a fan of the first two albums that's fine, but i don't feel that makes you a fan, it just means you dabble. i've yet to hear an album where there weren't at least a few songs i liked. what i like most about them is that they aren't trying to repeat themselves, good or bad they take chances. and the same people critiquing them for not making another album like blue or pinkerton were probably the same people bashing them when they first came out. or do people not remember that blue album was considered "too poppy and commercial" where pinkerton was thought to be a complete redo to try and break out of their original image. you just can't please some people.

There's nothing wrong with a band taking chances and changing...as long as the results are good. Everyone's mileage may vary, but I feel most of the changes Weezer has gone through in the past 13 years have not been positive.
@dominantkitty5
@dominantkitty5 10 жыл бұрын
i'm on the fence with that because though i feel the band has had it's fair shares of ups and downs they always seem to come out of it with something positive. and i love how creative they've gotten during their live shows and taken much more of a personal interest in including their fans. one show i went to one of the guys near the front of the stage had brought his guitar and had asked if he could play with rivers, so they pulled him up and let him jam out to hash pipe it was so random! :)
@SirHatchporch

Miz Liz I think they were doing that at every show for a while. The last time I saw them was at Inland Invasion in 2005 and they pulled a guy on stage to play "Undone" with them. I think they started interacting more with the fans back around 2001. They did a morning in-store appearance at Tower on Sunset the day the green album came out. I was going to get there in the middle of the night and wait in line for a few hours, but then the friend who was going to go with me told me that Weezer had already dropped by Tower around 1 a.m. to see how the line was doing...and ended up greeting every single person in line. We hurried down there but it was too late...although we did get to meet them inside that morning.

SirHatchporch wow i wish, the night before one of their shows they were apparently at a local bar just a few blocks from my house and somehow my weezer senses weren't tingling because i missed them and then later read about it in the paper after they had left. sad day, but i'm glad to hear they've been keeping with the tradition now of taking more time to interact with the fans. i had wanted to go on the weezer cruise SO bad but the prices were just ridiculous. :P

I do feel a bit sour of all the albums that came out after Weezer's "make believe" almbum.. this new recent albumb brings back the spark they used to have on the blue album and the epic awesomeness of the green album.. for example one of the new song lyrics says "take me back... b1ak to the lightning strap" ..if you're really Weezer fan, then you know what they mean by that lyric! Lol.. .. btw awesome reviews Anthony!! Keep bringing new awesome stuff to the table! !!

I appreciate that they are trying to please their old fans but I never like it when music or films are made to try and be nostalgic. It feels like trying to recreate something in a time period that no longer exists, when they should be trying to make something new. This album felt more like an emulation of their old style rather than using what made them good to begin with to make something new, i guess.

Out of curiosity, have you studied any music theory, Anthony? When you were talking about Cleopatra, you were talking about the melody being weird because it sounded like they were coming in a beat early. I'm pretty positive they're technically just playing a 5th beat at the end of each bar. On the album as a whole, I tried going into it with an open mind, trying not to hold it up to 90's Weezer. I've kinda learned that no matter what, if you do that, you're going to be disappointed. As a stand-alone album, I think EWBAITE is a solid album, and I agree on most of your points.

One of my favorite Weezer albums, I think it can stand close to Blue and Pinkerton in places. I like it's college student style rebellious "be yourself" attitude and it's unapologetic and defiant embrace of it's right to be Weezer Rock in a world where music has changed. I don't think The British are Coming is a necessarily a patriotic/anglophobic song, i think it's a song about defying record executives who try to tell Rivers what to do with his band's sound for the sake of commercialization, and the American Revolution is essentially an analogical backdrop describing River's sticking to his alternative rock/power pop guns in the face of such pressures, similar to the theme of "back to the shack".

guess i will check it out...weezer's blue album is really what got me into music. I can remember being about 7 years old and watching the videos for songs like Buddy Holly and Undone (The Sweater Song) and being captivated. I also loved Pinkerton. The band just wasn't the same for me after Matt Sharp left. It just seemed like Rivers Cuomo was trying to make songs to appeal to more and more people of a new generation and made some awful records in the process. Sounds like there's some material worth checking out on this one, though.

However, coming from someone who wasn't even born until '96, it's cool to see something like this. I couldn't agree with anthony more on the basis of they seem like they wanted to fix it but aren't trying 100%. But on the other hand rivers himself said that Weezer was trying something different. Personally I love the Pinkerton and blue album and the green album was practically a curve ball seeing that the music shifted from melodic playing and singing about how weird we all are and feel. To oh I have no girlfriend and now we're singing like a normal rock band just with our spin on it. Which the green album was good it wasn't terrible we just expected it to be......the nerdiness and feeling of it that Weezer was and I did like it just if you try something different that's hard for your fans to decide. If it doesn't work stick to what works best. This album was a little less good than the green album but still pretty good. I did enjoy some tracks like eulogy for a rock band lonely girl (even though it is the dead horse that was beaten by them) the British are coming future scope 3 and the British are coming as well as back to the shack. Personally I think since the original bass player left that's what happened to the band but that's my opinion

This album was the shit and if some songs are "mediocre" then thats fine because sometimes if you want a good weezer song then all you need is to have loud crunchy guitars and a catchy chorus, which is what EVERY song on this album does. And I don't think Anthony gets it that a good song doesn't always need to have a deep meaning. If it has shit lyrics but it's catchy and you can relate to it then that's awesome and that's what makes most songs great. Basically if you can jam to it...then sometimes that's all you need.

I really like this album. I bought it on itunes on a whim a week ago and have been playing it over and over since. It's definitely their best in a while. Count me as one of the few people who like "Make Believe", and most of the "Red Album". The only beef I have with those two efforts is that they have some great songs throughout, but don't play very well as ALBUMS that are cohesive and consistent all the way through. "Raditude" was a disjointed mess and I only liked one or two songs from it, and "Hurley" didn't do anything for me."Everything Will Be Alright" is, in my opinion, a joy to listen to and works all the way through. There's not a dud on it. That's good enough for me.
