I do love Pinkerton. But I have never in my life enjoyed El Scorcho. I loathe that song. The instrumental annoys the living daylights out of me. The lyrics are a complete non sequitur to the rest of the album and the vocal performance is just meh. Especially when Rivers throws himself into so many of the other songs here, like Getchoo. If No Other One wasn't in the middle of these tracks you'd see why El Scorcho is bottom tier Weezer

@@loudross El Scorcho fits into Pinkerton just fine. "really wanted these songs to be an exploration of my "dark side"-all of the parts of myself that I was either afraid or embarrassed to think about before. So there's some pretty nasty stuff on there. You may be more willing to forgive the mean lyrics if you see them as passing low points in a larger story, and this album really is a story: the story of the last 2 years of my life And as you're probably well aware, these have been two very weird years" -Rivers Cuomo, 1996 Fan Club Letter.

They're two different kinds of cheesy, though. Surf Wax is about Rivers riding a surfboard to work instead of a car, and El Scorcho is about Rivers stalking a half-Japanese girl. (or something like that.) One is silly and the other one is cringy. That being said i do like both.

I think Pinkerton is a lot more self-aware than you give it credit for, especially Pink Triangle. The "can't she be a little straight" line is tongue-in-cheek. It's an acknowledgment of having desperate thoughts that we know aren't right, but still think about. And I don't really get the hate for the guitar line in El Schorcho. Why is it bad exactly?

Pinkerton wasn't well-received when it cam out. People rejected it. Rivers said he put everything he had into Pinkerton, and when the feedback from critics and fans was mostly negative, it drove him to want to give up music for something like 4 years. When he returned to it, he only wanted to write Pop Radio hits, and relive the days of Blue. So he gave us Green. Thats why the "rebellion" was short-lived. Because he couldn't handle the rejection. Thats why we had 10 terrible Weezer albums. Rivers didn't want to experiment anymore, he just wanted to write hits.

I don't think it's fair to compare the albums in any context one might be better than the other. I'll go to blue if i want a catchy finger snappy background music, If I want a more open genuine album i'll go to pinkerton. You seem to be viewing it from a "blue is objectively better overall", and you're right to say that, but it's looking at them in a completely unintentional light. It was evident on release rivers didn't want the albums to be compared, he wasn't trying to make "another set of sweet jams", he was trying to make another standalone creation. You're going to get a lot of hate from pinkerton fans, but not because they think it's better, it's because they think you're comparing a perfect steak to a sweetened ice cream sundae. It just doesn't make sense.

All the things he found "annoying" about Pinkerton are the EXACT things that make it a cult classic. The things he complained about are the same things the critics initially complained about, but then changed their minds about. What makes Pinkerton such a great album is its brutal honesty and indifference towards what people want. That being said, I don't think it's better than the Blue Album. I think the two are like apples and oranges--and I like them both equally.

You definitely bring up some solid points. There is a much higher variety of song topics on the Blue album than on Pinkerton and Pinkerton can be a little overwhelming with it's aggressively garage-rock sound. However, I prefer Pinkerton because it's so much more "Weezer" than any album they've ever released. Weezer is a band made up of four nerds who are terrified of their own masculinity and shyness. Pinkerton seems to cover every relationship issue a guy like that could possibly have: He doesn't want to breakup with a shitty girlfriend because he hates being single (No Other One) He doesn't want to get close to a girl because he knows she will hurt him like all the rest (Falling for You, Why Bother?) He's trying to impress a girl that is nothing like him (El Scorcho) The girl he likes is a lesbian (Pink Triangle) Etc. Etc. It all ends with "Butterfly", a beautiful track in which Rivers apologizes for everything he said on the previous nine songs because he knows that his sexuality is starting to destroy him and anything he loves. Basically, Pinkerton is an album made for people who are confused, pissed off and depressed about relationships and love in our society for guys who aren't super "masculine". It's a message that most rock bands are too cocky and egotistical to bring up, but it's something that almost every guy can relate to. And if you CAN'T relate to it, why the hell are you even listening to Weezer in the first place?

adding to this, there are 2 more things that absolutely make this album too: - the hooks in this are, in my opinion, much better than in holiday. polished, very catchy, and they all make sense. - its so much more self-aware than people give it credit. a pretty obvious example is the scorcho bridge which shows how rivers knows how idealistic his thoughts are, yet he still has fun with it and he's still honest. that and the mixing lighter topics with very real ones is like taking a look onto ourselves and finally saying everything that bothers us in our own nuanced perspective, even if it's tongue and cheek, which often gets brought up as a criticism (like in this video), showing how oblivious they are to the actual album

Grant Mitchell the deluxe tracks are also really interesting. If you haven’t heard them definitely give em a listen. The song long time sunshine basically sings about all the things he wants to do, but at the end several vocals start singing the other songs in the album over top of the main vocals (why bother, love of my dreams, and also blast off which isn’t even on the deluxe version but it’s still a song about a problem rivers has) until the main vocals disappear and the song ends with “why”

He wasn't necessarily saying that the lyrics aren't metaphorical. I think he was just pointing out that the lyrics themselves are imaginative and contain an interesting imagery, without delving into the meaning or theme behind the lyrics. He clearly wasn't trying to get into that, and its not really fair to say that he's "not actually thinking".

Have you ever thought about the idea that No One Else isn't really trying to describe Rivers' ideal woman, but is him using satire to show that in relationships he's plagued by insecurities that he knows are ridiculous, and that it makes it impossible for him to be happy with anyone? Yeah, just like on el scorcho he sings 'i'm a lot like you, so please, hello, i'm here, im waiting'. As if just having things in common makes you a great couple. And on 'no other one' he sings about a relationship where the two people just stay together because they know each other that well and are afraid to be allone, another clearly dysfunctional way of looking at relationships. I feel like he knows it's wrong, he just wishes it all was that simple and don't we all. Another example is that he wonders why the lesbian can't be a little straight for him. That's what i love about pinkerton, it's so honest that he doesn't care about coming across as naive or that he's contradicting himself (tired of sex and the good life are basicly opposites) because thats how he feels and stuff.

+woodlandcritterpunch This is the sort of nuance I always gave Rivers credit for, and it's how I interpreted "No One Else" as well. A lot of the stuff he's written since then (like "Beverly Hills") has made me question whether he deserved that credit. I tend to believe these days that he's really that shallow and yet not afraid to be honest about it. Which is fine, I guess... but not something I identify with as much as the idea that it's satire.

I view Blue album and Pinkerton as brother albums and really can't be compared: Blue - Older brother because it is a more concise, clean album and has a good idea of who it is and what it wants to make songs about. It's the cool brother that everyone loves and was popular in school and has a successful career, but it's not a dick about it, he's actually a great guy. Blue is also more of a party album where everyone can mosh to and if you want to have a great bbq on the beach- you play this album, no question. Pinkerton - Younger brother because, frankly, it's more emotionally immature and there is not a filter within its lyrics. Also, it's trying hard to be like it's older brother, but it can't help but be its own self. It's an emotionally raw album and that's the beauty of it, Rivers ripped his heart open and bled out on this album, and this is the result. Its an album you can pine-to. The lyrics, although cheesy and not really too imaginative, poetically lets you see into his mind at this time of Rivers's life. If you want to stay in your room with the lights out and think about the unrequited loves in your life- you play this album. Either, or- play these albums loud.

OKAY.... That bacon line, was good in the 90s and has aged well. The line is not to be taken seriously as a lyric. The whole song is about the idea of "Why am i doing this?"... why can't he just say what he has to say, and why does he (rivers) have to make a song... its literally stated in the previous verse. "How stupid is it, I cant talk about it, Ive got to sing about it and make a record of my heart"........... The bacon line is supposed to be funny and satirical, an example of a failure of a cryptic romantic indi pop rock line... Its a really clever parody and actually really self aware. All in all the song El Scorcho gave me the confidence to tell the truth to a certain woman in my life. And not prevaricate or beat around the bush about it. I told her " I think Id be good for you, and you'd be good for me".... and for that I am eternally grateful.

I am alive because of Pinkerton. The realization that heartbreak did not have to lead to a body hanging from a noose changed everything. I could wring agony from my guitar’s neck as opposed to my own neck. You can say whatever you want, but Pinkerton is a better album because it saved my life.

i feel you so much. listened to this album the whole way through shortly after a breakup i thought would kill me, and i cried my eyes out listening to Butterfly. i always hated people who say that angsty or emotional music is some kind of trigger for suicide or depression... it's the opposite. seeing that brilliant artists and musicians and writers relate to the same problems we have is such a strong thing to connect with when you're at your lowest.

I think this is the heart of why it's so beloved. While I love Blue, nobody's going to get emotionally invested or attached to power-pop hooks and the silly lyrics in, say, Buddy Holly. But there's absolutely a level of emotional depth to Pinkerton, which is why I and I feel like a lot of other people love it and are not afraid to proselytize about it. Emotional depth is timeless in a way that nothing on Blue (except maybe Say It Ain't So, which coincidentally is also my favorite song from that album, and maybe Undone) can really come close to.

+Sam Cantor Heh, might be bait, but I'll still give a serious response. It probably takes a person who has pathetic and immature feelings to think at least Pinkerton is a 10/10. I'll acknowledge that at least about myself. But, that's what I love about Pinkerton. Yes, it's creepy at times. Yes, it's silly at times. Yes, it's adolescent at times. But, it's completely justified. We're not fed a sob story of some one-dimensional, misunderstood "nice guy" stereotype. Instead, Rivers puts all his "ugliness" on display. That's what makes it that much more sincere, passionate, and (can't believe I'm saying this) "emotionally raw". That's why I don't think immature, whiny, creepy, and pathetic have ever been done in not only such a tolerable manner but in such a relatable, lovable, and perfect way. I could talk on and on about Pinkerton. But, I'll spare you or anyone else of this cringe-fest. :^)

Pinkerton has an extra dimension to its lyrics where River's takes on a character exploring his own disillusionment and patheticness. This makes the album more complex and niche. Some quick points. I actually enjoy the fact that Anthony asserted that the sexism of No One Else worked in it's favor. Though, I'm upset that he didn't go over why The World Has Turned And Left Me Here makes it even better. Rivers humanizing the narrator of NOE, as a pathetic loser, who egotism bites him on his ass, makes it one of the greatest one-two punches in rock history. I'm also glad he didn't nitpick Pinkerton for being "creepy" and rather just talked things that he found silly or dumb. I think there are far too many people who cop out on an actual review of Pinkerton and just call it weird for the hell of it. That being said...gotta disagree with this "objective" viewpoint. In short, this album isn't just angst, it's angst from the perspective of a guy who has major psychological issues. The contrast of the silly lyrics against the gritty backdrop is why the album works so well. It's relatable, but once the album is done, you don't want to BE that guy. Rivers shows no sympathy for the narrator in question and his actions aren't glorified, unlike a lot of other albums that were being released at the time. That's why I love it. Perhaps my bias is overriding my better judgement, but I loved flawed characters and the narrator of Pinkerton is as flawed as it gets. A really quick note about the sloppy arrangements. The piano on Across The Sea, the symphonic solo on The Good Life, and the operatic arrangement of the chorus of No Other One all point to classical influences. One of the reasons I love those is because it's Rivers paying homage to a lot of his favorite composers and seemingly, purposefully doing a bad job, as if to say he'll never be as good as them. Self-loathing to a tee and in a far more creative way than most musicians. Is it better than Blue? I think that's debatable, but one isn't objectively better.

Blue is a great album, no one hates blue, but Pinkerton's overall vibe through out the album is what I believe made it better as an overall piece of art, it's a look into what an artist can go through after sudden success, which is what happened to rivers with the release of blue, all sprinkled with a little bit of trauma that was there before the success, which was only amplified by the success rivers got. Originally, rivers was actually writing a much more pop related album, that of the scrapped album "songs from the black hole", but rivers as an artist decided to go further and dig into what was really in his mind, instead of some random album that will sell but won't deliver the message an album like Pinkerton provides.

Hmmm... I appreciate that you find Blue to be superior to Pinkerton. It's a much sunnier, brighter, inviting record, with a ton of great sing-alongs peppered throughout, but I don't think you have to throw Pinkerton under the bus to make your point. I agree, generally speaking, Blue is a stronger album when it comes to track-listing and peaks and valleys and creating an anthemic nerd-rock statement. But many of things you list as problems with Pinkerton seem more like listener error on your behalf, which is understandable considering the album is actively trying to be discordant and unfriendly at times However, I never got the feeling like Pinkerton was trying to be angsty for the sake of angsty or that it's either trying to fit in with disaffected grunge or reacting against the sunny-pop of Blue. I think that's why Pinkerton is seen as such a special case for many; it still retains that post-pixies, college-boy power-pop but there's something about it that feels genuinely damaged and exposed. I never got a whiff of 90s, navel-gazing posturing from Pinkerton. The lyrics are sometimes shocking and inappropriate in an un-PC way, the guitars are much noisier and Rivers' vocals are pushed to some throaty extremes at times. The album is so confessional and bare that it feels voyeuristic to listen to. At first that can be a hard pill to swallow, and in 1996 when the album flopped, it was, but when you get into the mindset and the mood of album, I think it really pays off in a somewhat emotionally unhealthy way to relate - thus why Pinkerton is often sited as a big inspiration to later emo bands, despite Weezer having nothing to do with emo's hardcore roots. I like both albums and I think we can ALL agree that Weezer has never been the same since Matt Sharp left the band and we are all waiting for the day when he comes back to complete the puzzle again.

This is probably one of your worst takes ive seen. Not because of the actual opinion, i understand liking the blue album more than pinkerton, but your reasons. Goddamn, your reasons are bad. Ill go one by one. I like pretty much everything you say about the blue album, besides when you say that sexism has never been as catchy as no one else, but we’ll get back to that later. 3:09 You say that the instrumentals on this album are “unenjoyably messy,” but don’t elaborate on that at all. 3:18 This is a terrible comparison. Especially when you realize that after Nevermind, Nirvana released an album much more messy and raw in the form of In Utero. Something having clear production doesnt inherently make it good and vice versa. 3:31 That’s not the goal here. The goal was never “rebellion,” it was self expression. The album is all about River’s sexual and romantic struggles, and he wanted to convey his emotion through the music. 3:43 It was short lived because this album did terribly on release, critical and fan wise. Of course the band isnt gonna continue something that isnt working. 4:13 How can you praise a song like surf wax america then hate el scorcho’s lyrics for being cheesy? 4:49 Let’s go back to the “sexism has never been more catchy line.” How is this lyric any more “offensive” than no one else? which is also why I can't hype Pinkerton up to such degree despite its lyrics being painfully relatable to me because, idk if this is just something people will inherently deny but, you can only go so far in wearing imperfections as "badges of honor", and while I admire Pinkerton being the scorchingly honest album that it is, at some listens those TMI lyrics about sex and insecurity and all that stuff do become tiresome and at worst days, stomach-churning when it comes to narrative in music. I would've loved for people to have understood Pinkerton at the time it was released because I feel like it would've given Rivers the confidence to actually experiment more with their music or at the very least, stick to their sound w/o pandering to a demographic that grows younger every time and less interested with their music, but Pinkerton is basically the quintessential "double-edged sword" album for me, because the high and low points of the album are really just up to the listener's perception (whether if you'll let those low points be perceived as something honorable or not).

And besides Weezer, there is as well so much better music before and after these albums, makes them almost completely irrelevant, if it wasn't for Pinkerton.

I think the messiness on Pinkerton is actually meant to be smart. The Good Life, Falling For You and Across The Sea have really cool key changes that you'd really understand if you look at it as a composition, that and the fact that they didn't use a metronome makes Pinkerton so unique. It's one of my favourites but I can't compare it with the Blue album

Pinkerton is a better concept album, is more honest and dark, and as you say it's all about insecurities, and you are right it does thrive on the whole concept of loneliness and search for acceptance, and it does attract people who have been through such things, but let me tell you, being insecure is not as fun and "angry" as you call it, being insecure sometimes means not having the balls to show that side of yours you don't really like, saying certain things or acting a certain way, and this whole albums revolvs around a man who is coming out as real as he can get, with this album Rivers shared a part of him that most musicians wouldn't even consider, he comes out with all this dirty thoughts, sick adictions, infatuation problems, he just shows the messed up person fame has turned him into, and the way romantic relationships were becoming more of a pain than a relief, and I think being able to portray so well the way his thoughts has drifted since the blue album, the kind of things he is seeking now, the way he came to those conclusions, what it meant for a nerd to him to get so much access to females all of a sudden. It's personal, it's raw, and it's very unusual, say it's messy if you please, but I think it adds a lot to the thematic of the album, and I've always liked the way the angry vocals mix with the high pitched instrumentals on this, you may be right about the Blue Album being catchy and fresh when it came out, and having incredible songs, that's obviusly true I also really enjoy that album, but you are blowing the album waaay out of proportion, "Surf Wax America is hilarious!" really? I can't say it's not a funny concept, nor can I question that you laughed at it, but you really think it's funny enough to guess everyone will laugh their asses off on this songs because you did? I think it's one of the more stale and meaningless songs in the album, and that's the thing with Pinkerton, ALL of the songs are saying something importatn that add to the 10 track album, complementing on stories and anecdotes that it seems you didn't really connect with, I'd recommend actually reading "The Pinkerton Diaries" to understand what Rivers was going through and what this album meant to him, so you may understand what it can actually mean to it's audience, instead of just guessing they were trying to "reacting to the hype of the singles in the blue album". Honestly Anthony, I love your channel, and I love getting new music from you, but just declaring your point of view as the "Objetive Reality" stops being a joke when you are constantly shoving into our faces the fact that thinking otherwise is stupid or appropiate for someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. And I'm almost sure you're not even gonna read through the comment section as you are so convinced you are right and everyone else is wrong. Kinda dickish and silly, hey...BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION! (or is it the objective reality?)

I just love how intimate and brutally honest Pinkerton is. Songs like "Getchoo" is a song that always gets me pumped, "No Other One" is a song I could relate to of a past relationship, "The Good Life" is a groovy awesome track that always has my feet tapping, I agree with "El Scorcho" being whatever (great chorus though!), but man do I love "Pink Triangle" and "Falling for You" so much. I just personally love the record more than Blue any day of any week. Also what's wrong with the Green record? It has some really great songs like "Photograph" and it's much better than Make Believe and the records that followed. Still going to have to give the White Album a spin since I keep hearing its a return to form.

You said it yourself right there at 2:22 "Pinkerton lacks confidence all together." That's why it's so good, it is a messy album, put together by someone in pain, suffering from writers block and recalling uncomfortable memories from a time of great social anxiety. The quality of the blue album is undoubtedly better, but Pinkerton, though, unappreciated at it's time, grew and blossomed into something great, something platinum, not because of the songs, but because of the feeling, and experiences it conveys.

Saying Pinkerton is cringeworthy or insecure or messy or adolescent isn't an insult, it's the point. It's horribly sexist and self-centred and not pleasant but that's because it's like they ripped the thoughts and feelings out of themselves uncensored - it's written from the point of view of a depressive assholery white man child, and it perfectly encapsulates that mindset. I have no insecurities about saying that I have shared a lot of Pinkerton's insecurities, and I'm a very progressively-minded bisexual woman - I can still sympathise with the pathetic "why can't she be a little straight" because I've felt the same way about straight girls, for example (not that they're wrong or could be coerced but just wishing that they could ever be into you). Obviously you're being a little facetious with the objectivity thing but I really think it's a matter of personal connection and opinion.

She gets it. I listened to this with my girlfriend and explained a bit about each song after it wrapped and she mostly just found it fascinating. She also agreed on while Pink Triangle is simp-ish, it's not malicious. It's literally a dude longing for a girl who's not into him.

I never comment on youtube, but your video actually made me question why I prefer Pinkerton and reach some interesting answers. One particular point is the concept behind Pink Triangle, which, read straight (no pun intended), is totally stupid, but I (and maybe I'm imagining it) totally see a level of self-awareness there. Notice how he asks "can't she be a little straight?" versus how he says "everyone's a little queer", he's pleading for it, despite knowing that it's not a possibility. And of course it's offensive, the whole album is about being so self-centered that you hurt those around you and come off as a complete jackass. The instrumentals totally back that up, gone is the pitch perfect pop veneer, these songs have been completely corrupted by the venom in Rivers' lyrics. I think it's a great album for that reason, I certainly see the aesthetic choices in terms of the music as informing the context in which we're supposed to view the lyrics. It's definitely an album related to the cringe factor you find in young men and how the whole world seems to revolve around their sex life or lack there-of, but he paints the pictures so well that it's enjoyable as just a representation of those emotions which are common to everyone. I can totally see how someone might prefer the Blue Album and it's definitely better for just hearing some great tunes, but it's not as unique or singular an album as Pinkerton is in my opinion. I also think that certain albums function like life rafts, no personal experience there, cough cough, and people latch onto them so as to maintain some thread of sanity. Pinkerton is a lot more likely to be a salve in a lonely and depressing situation than Blue. That probably accounts for its vocal defenders.

Personally I absolutely adore the instrumentals on Pinkerton. The drums are punchier, the snare sound on Tired Of Sex is my favourite snare sound ever. And the riffs on every song are so meaty and heavy and just a thousand times more interesting to me than any riff on Blue album. I also felt like they were better players on Pinkerton and just bought more interesting songwriting to the table. As for the lyrics, I just find them endearingly honest, I don't care how weird they come off. That line about the turkey and the bacon is still funny to this day. I do love the Blue album to pieces and it is a tighter and more consistent record but Pinkerton just has more interesting song ideas and is more memorable to me personally

Don't get me wrong, I like Pinkerton and it's a great album. Blue and Pink are equal. If you asked me which one had the slight edge, I'd honestly probably say Blue (even though some more of my favorite tracks are on Pink) but just hearing you try to put down Pinkerton made me almost want to switch my opinion on the matter. Pinkerton has tons going for it; to just say it lacks depth or cleverness or to say its a bit more generic and 'with the times'; is just bullshit. If you prefer Blue, that's perfectly fine, but you can do it without putting the other album down. Just say the things that are great about Blue and bring-it-up, not put Pink down. Anyways for a video that covers two of my favorite albums ever, you managed to ruin it with the overanalysis. Thanks.
