The little details that make this song great: 1 - The little pause at 0:56 2 - bub-a-li-h-h-h-hing 3 - The sudden change in dynamics and guitar tone at the start of the chorus, with the vocals dropping out to make it more impactful 4 - The guitar fill after the first chorus, with another little pause at 1:53 5 - The extra guitar note that comes in in the second chorus 6 - The way Rivers goes up on the final 'so'.

Quote from Rivers Cuomo about the meaning of the song: "It's such a complicated story, way too complex to write a song about. I should never have done it. I was really afraid of alcohol at the time. I didn't drink till I was 21, not even a sip. I was petrified of alcohol. 'Say It Ain't So' was about when I was 16. I opened up the refrigerator, and I saw a can of beer. All of a sudden I made the connection that my step-father was leaving... because my father started drinking when he left my mother."

I lost my Dad to alcoholism, he was never violent, but his personality just slowly ebbed away. Such a great song but still hurts.
@BlackSeranna2 жыл бұрын
You rarely hear a story about nice drunks, but my daughter's best childhood friend (from age four) had a dad who was an alcoholic. He was the nicest drunk I ever met, which, for me, was a first. Eventually this guy and his daughter have to move away, because his parents, who employed him, were buying a resort down south, on a lake. All I could think was, "Drinking and liquor don't mix, what are they thinking? Don't they care about their son?" I wouldn't have thought this had I not seen him walking home taking up a whole road because he couldn't walk straight; another time I was leaving the neighborhood late at night with the kids (my parents-in-law lived there) and I see this guy leaning over his car, passed out. The temperatures were freezing, it was mid-January, and I recall the temps being around ten degrees Fahrenheit. I just pulled up the vehicle perpendicular to the house, not even worrying about impeding traffic (which there was none). I told the kids to wait, and I put my hand on this guy's shoulder. He was lucky, he hadn't passed out on the car for long, so I told him, "We have to get you inside!" He was so busy telling me hello, he even wanted me to open his door for him. I got him in and I'm sure he went to sleep inside, but I made sure the door was shut. He didn't even remember it happening, because the next time I saw him, he didn't mention it. So they move to the resort, and he dies in a boating accident. There was some maintenance call his brother didn't want to take - a family renting a houseboat was having trouble with their refrigerator, so this guy goes out there to fix it. They don't realize he's an alcoholic, and I'm betting that they give him a few beers to thank him. He ends up missing a turn on the way back to his house, and he ends up grounding the boat, which slid up the bank and into a tree. I went to his funeral, and afterwards, (and this is another first, it will never be topped), his brother made a speech about all the pranks the guy pulled. Everyone at the funeral reception were laughing so hard that there were tears in our eyes. I will never forget this guy, he was a one of a kind. I'm sorry to hear about your dad - I'm sure, had the guy I spoke of aged many more years, his mind would have ebbed away as well. I have never understood addicts. I am married to one, but I will never understand it, or how it works. I'm just hoping that, like cancer, we can have a cure for addiction some day. It is insidious.
@Hexane882 жыл бұрын
I am so, so sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace, and can learn how to live with the pain of losing such an important part of your life. I'm just a rando on the internet, but I have faith in your ability to adapt, overcome, and find balance. I wish you the best.

@@tonywhite8162 It isn't a question of man versus woman (you can leave gender out of it), it's more of a sociopath versus a non-sociopath question. A sociopath will set aside feelings and leave the other person out in the cold. I have had experience with more than my share of them - if they think they need to step on you while you're drowning so they can get further onto the bank, they will do it. They might be sorry later, but mostly, they don't have any normal feelings of empathy. They only feel sorry when it's them who is hurting or not getting what they want. Often times, sociopaths will decide to hurt those who have slighted them.
