I'm a forest manager by profession here in the UK, and have already sown, grown to sapling stage and planted out P. elongata and P x shontang with Euclyptus nitens etc in lowland Cornwall. Seeds mainly from Romania. Doing nicely, will be monitoring, and we may get some timber to turn to Cornish surfboards! They need protection from deer browsing in the establishment stage. Paulownia are also N fixing, so good on reclamation /former mining sites. As for weeding, that is only required during the establishment phase, totally pointless beyond that and a waste of time and money, plus decreases biodiversity (bad forestry practice). We don't want serried ranks of trees in rows with no understorey or ground layer, it is called tree farming at its worst.
@wegrow46535 жыл бұрын
Kernow Forester Hi. Thanks for charing your practical experience and your personal opinion on growing Paulownia with us! We completely agree with you that a high level of biodiversity is important to all of us. But please consider that we at WeGrow only set up Paulownia plantations if we - in the same step - increase the biological value of the piece of land. To all of you: Please do never cut down a primary or secondary forest to set up a Paulownia plantation. If you grow Paulownia on fallow or agricultural land, you always do something good to us and our next generations! WeGrow, Germany

@@kernowforester811 hello Kernow Forester, I am thinking that Paulownia is a great solution for reforestation of a destroyed primary forest. Normaly pioneer specimens such as betula, salix or poplar are the first to establish a new forest. On bare or gras land we find a harsh climate where most forest trees cannot thrive. Thats where the paulownia could make a chance. If we would plant a diversity of pioneer trees along with up to 30% Paulownia we could sow forest trees underneath them after 6 years. In that timescale the ground is shaded enough that fagus, abies and others could thrive and replace the pioneer forrest in the future.
@kernowforester811 Жыл бұрын
@@Timausdenardennen Yes Paulownia spp are in effect a pioneer species, and importantly is nitrogen fixing. That means it especially is useful on reclamation sites. Here in the UK, we already have a useful nitrogen fixing species, Alnus glutinosa (common alder) and related and imported exotic Italian and Red alder.
@Timausdenardennen Жыл бұрын
@@kernowforester811 so ahead of our time to migrate some specimens that are more resistant to drought. We here in germany have limited posibilities due to our forest laws that restrict the use of foreign trees. But we do some trials in order to keep the softwood in our forest. We did the mistake to transform the natural forest into plantations of Picea abies and pinus sylvestris. Now we face the consequences of our mistakes we already do scince the 1700... the beetle kills the picea, the drought and mushroom kills the pinus... also the system of planting and harvesting of a whole forest appears to be a major risk of unsuccessful forestry and low grade timber. Last year we had a drought saison from the end of March till September, now we try cedrus libani, cedrus atlantica and pinus ponderosa as substitute for our vulnerable native pines. Further we observate that the bucks (fagus) beginn to die from the drought on some places which concerns already the public. Climate change calls for some foreign trees that are used to these new conditions to mix with the native species. To get rid of the risky one age and class forest types we begin to rebuild to the Permaforest model where we have mixed specimens and all mixed age classes to keep the forest in its optimum stage of growth with a yearly growth rate of over 30m³ per 10000m². More than every other monoculture could ever yield.

😀 Nice video on the growing process. It's good to see the production of Paulownia taken so seriously. In the early 2000's people in the US were haphazardly dropping seeds into the ground and expecting a gold mine of grade lumber in 10-15 years. Just because it grows fast doesn't mean it's easy to bring to market! This specie hold so much potential. I'm glad to see the seeds and production methods refined.

this tree got caught in a hype train about 10 years ago. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. yes, it grows fast, the bloom lasts for a month, it smells lovely but it can spread quickly and take over, so don't plant it anywhere near your house. the wood may be light and easy to work with but it isn't long lasting. i think it's good for poor soils where it will grow more slowly but it can nutrients from deep down in the ground and get the good stuff out and into the leaves which you can use as compost. but because it grows quickly the leaves decompose quickly, so even the leaves are nowhere near as good as leaves from an oak which decomposes for 5 years or so. you can claim grassland quickly by planting this tree and in this way create a good environment for the "real" trees like beech and oak to establish in the shadow of the paulownia. other than that i see no use for it. of course, when a company invests a ton of money in one thing, they will only show you the upsides and try to sell sell sell in order not to lose money.

@wegrow46533 жыл бұрын
Hi Miguel. Kiri Trees show a very high relative water use efficiency and 3-4 years after planting also a very high drought resistance. But of cause, the more water available (by natural rainfall or irrigation), the faster the growth. This is just the law of photosynthesis. The trees you usually plant once and then harvest 2-3 times as the trees regrow from the stump/roots. A professional fertilizer managment makes sure you keep the pH and increase soil organic matter and soil fertility.

Those plantations in Spain will turn into desert eventually. How sustainable is that? Oh but that's in Spain. Ok, I guess that makes it sustainable.
@wegrow46535 жыл бұрын
Ecosystem Design Hi. Planting Paulonia on fields that before were irrigated by pivot irrigation systems, saves water from the first day on. Kiri Plantations are ecological below natural forest but far above conventional farming land. Due to the shading of the land it sustainably stabilizes the water circulation of a region.

Well, after checking your website, I wouldn't say your plantations are in northern Spain. Only one of them is on the northern half of Spain, and even so, it's more of a Mediterranean weather than the Atlantic one in northern Spain. Which begs the question whether this tree would actually be that productive in the actual northern coast regions of Spain (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country). What we got here are massive eucalyptus plantations, and I wonder if a tree like this would change their minds about it if it's worth it. For starters, eucalyptus are harvested once every 15 years or so. But that would only be if it's any better than eucalyptus from an ecologycal point of view, I mean, if it's not invasive and its water requirements are not that high.
@wegrow46535 жыл бұрын
fadetounforgiven Hi. Thanks for your comments. We know that Paulownia grows well in the area of Lleida. If it can substitute Eucalyptus we are not sure as Paulownia has very different site requirements and usually additional irrigation.

@@wegrow4653 Hi, I saw where your plantations are in Spain. But I meant on the Northwestern part of the country. It's quite a rainy place. It's often compared (justified or not) to Ireland or Scotland. Now, a bit after watching your videos I read that Pawlonia is an invasive species, and that wouldn't make it such a nice thing. Eucalyptus is invasive enough already.

fadetounforgiven Hi again. We also growing Paulownia in Germany for 7 years. Also very cold and rainy weather. It works good, of cause the warmer the faster the growth. Very important: The hybrids of WeGrow are not invasive. Only P. tomentosa, which is not suited for forestry anyway, is potentially imvasive.
@fadetounforgiven5 жыл бұрын
Hi again and thank you for answering. From what I have read, it seems that some other kinds of Paulownia are invasive as well, but anyway. This part of Spain, I guess, is not as cold as Germany may be in Winter, as it doesn't snow near the coast except for mountains. Nice to know. Thank you.

Already planning to grow P. elongata, here in the SW of the UK, in sheltered, lowland valleys sites, mixed with certain species of Eucalyptu shuch as E.nitens. We already get YC 36-50 for some species of Eucalypts, interesting to see what P. elongata etc will get us. I am personally growing them from seed, to plant out in trials hopefully next year. The next step would be to look at clonal stock. A lot of work to be done, to avoid the pitfalls, such as pests in the establishment phase. Paulownia is particularly susceptible to some issues we can get here in the south and south west of the UK, such as wind damage (more winter, but we do get occasional summer storms), late spring frosts (rare but they happen), slugs, snails (common in damp, grassy areas), rabbits, voles and deer (a major pest). Normal tree shelters are not an option. From Cornwall, SW UK.

How do you place the utmost importance on ecological sustainability by growing only one kind of plant in such a large area????????????
@AlMoxtar5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you are familiar with concept of crops, this is where all our food comes from since humans stopped being hunter gatherers. Forests are forests and farms are farmed. Ideally, you grow fast growing wood on farms in order to leave forest to be forests.
@pipe2035 жыл бұрын
@@AlMoxtar Ooh and you think this is working? Please, stop living in a fantasy world. You don't even need to do a great research job to perceive that this model of agriculture and "sustainability" masked shit thing is not saving any forests outside. come here to Brazil, folks, and say this shits to the forests and biodiversity that are dying day after day. Wake up. the last thing you are doing is sustainability. the only thing you are sustaining is the money in your pockets
@AlMoxtar5 жыл бұрын
@@pipe203 So, your definition of sustainability is to spend time, labour and money regenerating true firsts then go back and cut it all to harvest the wood? When you buy your loaf of bread do you insist it was harvested from a meadow? Agriculture by definition is not a sustainable activity. You are growing domesticated crops using resources and labour. None of it is sustainable. It is simply unnatural. There are on the other hand more than 7.7 billion humans on earth who need resources, and growing. The only workable solution is to better use available resources AND to protect what is left of natural habitats. So yes, it is working. Agroforestry is better than grazing, better than cutting true forests, better than abandoning previously productive land to degrade into deserts.

WUNDERHOLZcom Hallo!
