World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. @@3DHDcat that's true, but over the board you have to have nerves of steel when opponent is coming after you like this. The most important thing is not to succumb to the strong desire to punish your opponent for recklessness, but just to continue making solid moves which will win eventually.

Wei Yi just like me forreal: crazy attacking style where anything gets sacrificed for the attack! (I'm 1700 Elo, so not a 2740 superGM like him but still 🌝) Would be great to see him play a match against Dubov, engines would break trying to keep up with that madness! Great win by Gukesh too. His calculating skills need to be at least this sharp if he wants to really fight in the Candidates against attacking players like Nepo, engine precision players like Fabi or tricksters like Alizera. And can't wait too see what he does against the World Champ himself, Ding Liren. We all know Magnus is still the best player in the world, but Ding earned his title and deserves to prove he's worthy of it, so let's see how he takes on a potential challenger!

Wei Yi is the modern Tal. Win or lose he always comes up with some crazy, original ideas. They both must enjoy playing against each other as Gukesh also likes this style of play

A bit similar, Dubov does it better. The combinations are better I think with Dubov just like Tal. They are very hard to calculate with Tal and Dubov. Wei Yi has to make his combinations much more complex.
