From what I have read and observed, weight lifting can definitely be of benefit to the boxer. For example, sprinters are of course one of the most fast twitch-dominant athletes out there and they train with weights to help them become even more powerful/faster. So weight training wont necessarily decrease speed, but it has to be highly specific in order to promote fast twitch development such as the Olympic lifts and heavy functional movements such as squats, deadlift variations, shoulder presses etc. In any case, most people should worry about getting the boxing fundamentals down before worrying about weights. You have to decide on where your priorities lie. Great video as always.

Facts in my opinion everbody mmost lift, and athletes too, The only weight exercises i think people need(athletes who want to get bigger or stronger without getting slower) are: Deadlift Barbell squats Military press Row Neck crunches with weight Lunges Snatch Power clean And obviously some hypertrophy exercises Shrugs Lateral raises Calf raises Bench press( bench press aa hypertrophy exercise do to the fact that bench press only builds strengths for bench press. And of course calisthenics and plyometrics Push ups Dips Pull ups Chin ups Plyo push ups Plyo pull ups Plyo squats Sprinting And their weighted variations tho And ballistic training or medicine ball training, and traditional cardio(jump rope oe jogging) That's all you need and of course technique work (boxing technique or basketball technique depending on your sport

@@danielriccobono9880 @Daniel Riccobono true...I guess its more useful to heavyweights who wish to add more bulk but even olympic lifters have weight classes. Lifting heavy i.e a low rep range will increase power/strength without the added weight increase. I defo agree in the sense that weight training should not be the main focus if youre a boxer anyways.

It sound like powerlifting can still be beneficial , very different from bodybuilding, bc they have weight classes too and also want to be as small as possible while producing the most strength. Powerlifting also is focused on compound movements and not at all focused on adding mass. Some of the smallest powerlifters easily out lift your avg juice head in your nearest commercial gym. It also has its benefits in explosiveness if trained for it like Olympic sprinters and football players who incorporate it in their workouts.

I’m a big dude. But I’m fast with power and have great technique. I do both Cali and weights. I’m not trying to be big. There’s just a lot of calisthenics I can’t do because I’m over 240lbs atm. So I can’t do a handstand push-up or pike push-ups just yet. So I replace with barbell military presses standing. I’m at 18rounds of boxing work after I do calisthenics and weights. I try to shoot for 15 reps of whatever weight I’m doing. My schedule is as follows Calisthenics - Chest and back, then do 18 rounds of boxing. Calisthenics - arms and shoulders, then 18 rounds of boxing Leg Day - warming up with Plyometrics I’m doing squats and deadlifts calf raises etc. Followed by 18 rounds of boxing Weights - Chest and back 18 rounds of boxing Weights - arms and shoulders, 18 rounds of boxing Kickboxing on the 6 days to switch it up. Eventually I’m gonna try and do 21 rounds of boxing. Either way I’m making sure my technique is sharp. The thing about these body builders is they don’t have technique either so they throw like a girl and in their mind they think their muscle is what makes them hit hard. My explosiveness comes from my legs anyways. When I lift weights I’m not trying to overload the muscles too crazy like these fitness influencers are trying to do. I know lean is the way to go.

I went from powerlifting and just general heavy lifting all the time into combat sports. I'd say being stronger helps everything but you only need to be strong enough...so if you spent years lifting you're already there. As far as the fast twitch thing I'm not sure but when I take it too far with lifting I'm just slow because I'm drained of energy...I'm tired. I'm sore... And in turn slower. But I'm with you on just training to look intimidating that's some pussy shit.

If I'm not mistaken Carl Frampton deadlifts 3 times his bodyweight and did a to of strength training in general, and he was a former 2 time world super bantam weight champion. I believe its not one size fits all. Everyone has different body types however I do believe if you are heavy lifting then there is truth to it slowing you down in your boxing. A bit of weights and bodyweight I'd say are probably key for boxing

@@bcb5696 I also agree. I think it's more how you manage it. Like if you don't stretch after a heavy lifting session then it will cause your muscles to naturally tighten, therefore restricting your range of motion etc

This is so true. I have Been boxing for 40 years. (I m old) I have so many guys thinking bigger muscles means you punch harder. Muscle bound guys punch like girls and I have seen skinny lanky guys just Crack when they punch. I honestly believe that punchers are born with heavy hands and proper technique just brings out the power. To get true punching power = mass x speed x follow through. No follow through and you only have fast point fighting. Ie Tae Kwon do

Look into contrast training, heavy lifting superset with an explosive plyometric exercise to stimulate, strength, power and speed. If you're only working on gaining strength, then yes you'll be slow because lifting heavy weight isn't typically an explosive movement. But if you get strong and then learn to use that strength with speed and power then that's the secret recipe.

I agree everything u said. Nowadays fighters r so concerned bout s&c that it has become their main priority rather than boxing training. What kills me is that people now don't consider calisthenics as a major s&c workout, they do it for just warmup. Whereas legends like Ali, Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Earnie Shavers never did weights. They focused majorly on calisthenics, wood chops, sledgehammer work, rowing etc compound stuff like that. Angelo Dundee said that he never made Ali even lift a pencil & still he KO'd Foreman who lifted regularly. People nowadays need to learn about the old school training methods & start respecting calisthenics. But most importantly Boxing training must be their first & outmost priority.

Its beneficial depending on your natural weight class. Lifting for strength and not bodybuilding is always the way to go. It helps. Just understand your boxing is more important. If you're below cruiserweight, lifting 1-2x a week is good, if you are cruiserweight to heavyweight 3x is fine because theres alot more pushing and mauling

Some light weights are relatively necessary but not heavy weights and lowe reputation. Boxers need to be doing explosion exercises not for muscle mass. The training for boxers is for indurance and speed. No heavyweights are good for Boxing. Other than maybe some deadlifts for the lowe back and leg power. But the boxer should keep a lowe Bmi and work on the stamina gain not muscle mass that will only slow you down and make you fatigue quicker .

It's common sense if you do resistance training that when the resistance isn't there you're going to be able to move faster. Say you carry a 50lb rucksack and wear 40lbs of body armor while road marching 12 miles then the next time you road march 12 miles with no rucksack and body armor on. You will be faster with nothing on. In fact, you might be able to run those 12 miles with ease. So yes, resistance training will make you faster in whatever you do when the resistance isn't there.

Powerlifting if done right won’t put on huge muscles it will only make muscles dense and stronger . Imagine a small guy twice as strong but no or little weight as before . Powerlifting focuses on dense muscles , and not big ones . I was explosive when I trained or spared . I would find a new leave of energy . Right when I was tapped out ready to give up . My punches were unbelievable strong enough for the guy I’m sparring with to ask me to stop hitting hard . I would brake through guards or blocks . But I will say it was moments I had this great moments of strength . My punches were juiced up speed too . It actually made me faster too powerlifting . I lost over a 100 pounds and put muscle lean muscle on too . So it depends on what weightlifting you talking about . People who ride bikes do powerlifting for more speed and power . It’s used in different sports .

If someone knows the answer please let me know. Basically what I want is to workout and then do shadow boxing at the end so that I can put in a 20min cardio in there, while playing "Thrill of the fight". the chances of me fighting anyone are very little anyways (can always call 911) that is why I go the route of muscle to passively lose extra weight. thanks and have a nice day.

Hey coach v. Wouldn't you argue the best strategy when it comes to boxing is to avoid getting hit rather than landing more hits in the round? Remember you saying you want your fighters to reach an amount of strikes by the end of a round...

If you start at 15, i would instantly change to MMA, it has developed so fast and its not one dimensional or do Thaiboxing/Kickboxing. Because at that age you can get really flexible and get some bone conditioning, not bashing boxing or anything thats pure art but we life in the 21st century, fighting has developed.

@@jorgebush7519 I agree. But if he's training to be a professional boxer he should stick to boxing. If he wants to finish fights on the streets, then a combination of Muay Thai and BJJ will suffice. But to be honest any fighting experience will give you a massive advantage in a street fight cause most punks can't throw proper punches. It's best to just pick anything because making the wrong choice is better than making no choice at all. Pick whatever you enjoy the most and can stick to.
