2 things: #1, it's amazing to me how few seconds that ends up shaving. -- it's rly cool to see the actual impact of a pseudo simulated 10 hoursepower gain. This feels like what ppl mean when they say a small 3hp gain from an exhaust mod will be more or less negligible for street use. #2: I love that they left the crash in. It's just.. helpful to see what actual lived motorcycle riding can be like. Even experienced riders go down. Especially when they're pushing it on a machine they're not ultra familiar with. Even though these are highly edited, i'm grateful to see something real in the midst of it. Even when it's not flattering. Thanks f9

last weekend i went on (and almost drowned) my 2001 piaggio liberty 50 cc (with 2007 tires, they still aren't cracked) down some flooded trails. the mud was so bad that even thinking about giving it more revs than needed to engage the centrifugal clutch would cause the rear to step out and every stop longer than 5 seconds would get me swarmed by at least 20 mosquitoes. it all went fine (although i almost dropped the thing couple times when turning around due to the path being flooded higher than the airbox airbox on the bike). I finally found a trail that didn't go into waist deep water instantly and after a couple km and some puddles there was one innocuous looking puddle (about 30 cm wide and 3 meters long) in the middle of the path that i went through it and then i felt water in my shoes and the bike died (found out ignition circuitry isn't waterproof). And i have to lift the bike up out of the water while standing on mud that's too slippery to even stand on. i manage to do it (really worked my hamstrings there), continue another 50 meters, see a clearing literally 30 meters away and a "puddle" that's 30 meters long. Decide it's not worth it to risk it, turn around and go home. Didn't have to really clean the bike afterwards because i got caught in torrential rain on the way back so i just went through some puddles to (mostly) clean it. No damage was done except some workout pain in my core and hamstrings. All in all you "can" go on some pretty sketchy stuff on street tires, you just need to have your wits about you at all times. Also need to have some strong legs in case you get stuck. But if it's just some squishy rutty mud, you'll probably be able to quite easily go through on street tires (if they aren't the tiny china scooter ones). You probably won't be able to go fast, but still.

Air suspension with compressor, heated seats, chrome bits, big floor boards, huge tour bags with (literally) 10 pairs of clothes for a 6 day trip, and more pockets than a pair of boy scout’s cargo shorts.. Which were also filled with stuff they never used… When all was said and done they were riding twisty roads on awkward, slow, and thirsty bikes.. It honestly was sketchy as hell rolling behind them.. But every night at the bars they’d always talk about how they need to buy smaller bike’s just so they can enjoy riding again..

😎👍🇺🇲 That was my #1 priority building my 500. Add lightness. The NSR MC21 came in at 275 lbs when I started the project. (Tank empty.) After I finished the install and changed the fork assembly, trail section and added as much lightness as my budget would afford It came it at 310 lbs with 1/2 tank of fuel. (About 2 gallons of fuel) I never got the chance to scale the two motors but the older bigger unit had to be more than twice as much. It was well worth it. If you've ever ridden a well tuned, lightened and piped 93 NSR 250. You know what life is all about. Then add more less (trying to compensate for the heavier motor) weight and several more HP and two more cylinders. You know what "OMG" is all about. I swapped steel for Titanium. Mild steel for chromoly tubing and replaced as many steel washers for aluminum as I could. It even has hollow chromoly engine bolts. I drilled holes in anything nonstructural. Even though my budget was miniscule. It came out perfectly. It works much better than I ever dreamed. I'm not sure which is bigger. The crowd it gathers at meets or the wicked smile it gives me.😈 Adding extra lightness to an already super light is challenging. Especially when you have only about a + zero dollars to spend. This thing even has a set of donated aluminum ceramic carbide front rotors 😲 In the end. I'm just bragging 😄 Cheers everyone.🤙

One thing I remember from the car world (amateur street racer back in the day)… anything you add or subtract, there is usually a corresponding modification that needs to be done. I mean, weight reduction isn’t engine mods or anything, but perhaps the suspension could be dialed in to compensate for the lighter load? I mean, I doubt the forks have any manual adjustment, but I wonder if control would improve with a suspension swap? (Even minus the knee grip for the gas tank)

@@izmesamsung2581 he shaved like 7 seconds off his run time on that ‘ancient Honda’, but it seemed like the handling became miserable for an experienced rider. I tend to leave my bikes stock and throw mileage at them. No sense tricking them out when they’re only in my world a few years and then I trade ‘em off with 50k miles on the clock… so I’m mostly just curious.

Great video, as always! I ride motogymkhana, and did tests with weight reduction. For every Kilogram lost you gain more than 0,07% in time. Weight before and after the wheels (headligth assembly) was even more with 0,18% / Kg 🤓.

I would have kept the fuel tank but just put less fuel so you can grip with your legs to help handling for those turns. See if you gain or lose a second. 😂

What's the battery life on your drop-down mechanic ? Ever thought of recharging him with solar ?

Not too good actually... we get about 4 hours before he needs a recharge. Micro USB too, which is a real pain in the ass. Thinking of putting him on craigslist if you're interested. ~RF9

Awesome video as always, but even more interesting that usual for me as I currently have a hacked up gl500 in my garage that I will be further chopping into something different… thinking between a cafe and scrambler style.

STILL upset you didnt include the rotary in your engine video!!!!!
@stalincat2457 Жыл бұрын
How many relevant rotaries are there for sale? Honestly even with the BMW K1600 and Goldwing I'd say including the six cilinder was quite a stretch. I'm dissapointed the Honda 52° V-twin engine was silently and unceremoniously discontinued but you don't hear me mentioning that every other video :)
@catlee8064 Жыл бұрын
@@stalincat2457 Susuki, Yamaha, kawasaki, Norton.....all had rotary engined bikes. Also Crighton have released a new rotary and it looks STUNNING btw!
@stalincat2457 Жыл бұрын
@@catlee8064 So Suzuki had the RE5 wich is now nearly half a decade old. Yamaha had nothing more then a concept, as did Kawasaki. Norton has sold less then 1000 wankels and Crightons are built-to-order by the one man assembly line named "Brian". I think the odds of somebody walking into a dealership and accidentally buying a wankel engine without knowing of the advantages and drawbacks is "quite small". Besides, Fortnine did an entire video on the Wankel. If people are interested in owning such a motorcycle they will find a way. I am not hating on the wankel by the way, I love the idea and hope they make it work someday but for what that video was meant to convey it's simply a irrelevant engine to include, just like two strokes or supercharged bikes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@aussiebloke609 Жыл бұрын
@@stalincat2457 Not sure including the 6 cylinder engines is that much of a stretch either. Other than BMW and the Goldwing, don't forget the Honda CBX, and Kawasaki had the KZ1300 - both transverse installations. And we shouldn't forget the Benelli Sei 750 that introduced the first inline 6 motorcycle in the mid '70s. Certainly not commonplace engines, but not unheard of either.
@stalincat2457 Жыл бұрын
@@aussiebloke609 I understand that the six cilinders were represented due to their "theoretic perfection" and they can still be bought today but it is even stated in the video that it is a niche: Not many buyers will regret accidentally buying a BMW K1600 because they were expecting a raw, pulsating Harley-esque experience. Although the idea of a big leather-clad biker bashfully trying to ignoring the stares as he parks his K1600 at the Hells Angels club house does amuse me more than it should 🥲

Another awesome video. People rarely mention it but a part of weight reduction is maintaining weight ratios. Lose as much weight as you can then add a little bit back to keep things balanced and you will be faster than you were at just the weight reduction. I'm sure it's a bit lessened on a motorcycle compared a car but I'd like to see balance of the bike after the weight reduction and if adding 5-10 pounds of weight back strategically would make the bike more stable at the same elapsed time or if it would even make it a bit faster.

Good point! I got the chance to pick Jeff Bailey's brain about this. Their race challenger has several pounds of ballast behind the engine, apparently. But the riders ask them to move it around depending on personal preference and track layout. ~RF9
